I think we should legalize hard drugs to remove the criminal element from drug distribution and pay for treatment with taxes. Who agrees with me?

I think "yes," but with some regulations and restrictions. I think some professions, such as medical professionals, law enforcement, emergency responders, airline pilots, and similar types of occupations shouldn't be allowed to take hard drugs. Sobriety in their jobs is important because they hold the lives of other people in their hands.

Besides that, yeah, I think all other drugs should be legalized.

I voted No.

I live in an area (Appalachians) that is notorious for meth. I do not want to see the people who cook it and distribute it ever considered legal.

Exactly. Meth is the only reason i would be against 'legal hard drugs'. Meth has literally destroyed entire communities in my state. Meth is one helluva drug...

If Meth was legal then the bad guys you reference would be out of business. Those who ingest it could be offered help to get off it.

Until then, the bad guys continue to make big money while law enforcement is burdened with trying to put them out of business. Addicts commit crimes to pay for their addiction and then give their ill-gotten money to the pushers.

Drugs should be treated as a social/health issue and not as a criminal issue as it has been now for many years.

I think it should be left up to state and local governments.

They don't have to be. Simply regulate the manufacture and distribution of meth in a manner that best suites your area.

Meth is a toxic chemical that takes HAZMAT to dispose of. It makes cocaine look like child's play.

How is that true?

There is already offers to help those addicted to meth. Because Jimmy who cooks meth in his garage is now legal does not put him out of business.

Meth is a dangerous substance for both the maker and the user. It is also highly addictive.

I could go for it if we could designate specific cities as drug zones for all the addicts to populate:mrgreen:. I don't want us to end up looking like Amsterdam.;)

There are already designated areas for addicts to go to and that is areas where they are less likely to be caught: Either into the concert jungle or the backwoods.

Yeah, but make it legal and they will be in my face. I don't care how they live, I don't care what they do, but I don't want to watch the misery on a regular basis. To each his own, just keep your problems to yourself.:)

We should start treating meth like any other biological agent.

If a community wants to ban the manufacture and sale of meth, more power to them, if a community wants to permit the manufacture and sale of meth, more power to them. Eventually, the best framework will emerge and will be implemented across the country. Trial and error, decentralization of power, and personal choice are the prescribed methods of social policy per the US Constitution.

So what? Her choice. I've seen people destroy their lives with alcohol, too.

I do not advocate legalizing any drugs currently illegal, certainly not hard drugs. I don't really care much one way or another about marijuana, but I think legalizing harder drugs would be detrimental to society. I think the social and legal stigma associated with those drugs is a good thing.

Just let state and local governments regulate drugs. Localities with bad regulatory frameworks will fail and vanish, and the ones with good regulatory frameworks will thrive and serve as an example to the rest of the country.

meh I just posted in another thread on the topic because it had drifted that way, then I saw this one, yes I am all for legalizing drugs.. all of them, legalizing them does not mean more users, in fact ideally under a properly developed legal setting aimed to control drugs, new users would be discouraged.

my other post I just made(a bit ahead of some jumping in on this thread and this discussion, but relevant):

What I consider the ideal scenario is a two pronged distribution method for hard drugs.

1) pay to play - if you want to use recreationally, so be it, your body, your prerogative., you pay and are taxed for this - with the funds from this supporting rehab programs open to all, and also to support the other prong.

2) Free maintenance - This is for the bottom of the barrel down and out cases, if an addiction goes to the point where you would be stealing, or selling your body, or whatever.. there will be maintenance dose available for free.. you must go to a clinical setting and have the drug administered there.. in this setting the user would slowly build trust with trained specialists (ideally one assigned their "case") who can at least look out for their well being, and try to persuade the user to get the treatment they need to kick their habit.

unfortunately case 2 segregates for the poorest of the poor, and does not address the addict who is able to finance his habit, for them the best we could do is to offer treatment minus the negative stigma and the cost, and hope they seek it out.

We could end all crime if we made murder, rape, theft, child porn, statutory rape, arson, drunk driving and many other things legal, there would be no crime.

from drug distribution and pay for treatment with taxes.

I would rather that my tax dollars be used to incarcerate their ass, not bail them out of a mess they deliberately got themselves into. Drug treatment is not the responsibility of the tax payers.

Who agrees with me?

Let me get this straight not only do you want hard drugs legalized but you want me to pay for their treatment? Are you high(of course you are, why am I asking a stupid question) because that would make sense for why you came up with such a dumb idea.

How is keeping them illegal on a Federal level at all beneficial? All it does is force drug addicts into black markets and prisons, where the problem grows and festers.

All these crimes are crimes against another person. Simply ingesting drugs is not. The distinction is an important one.

Why do you want to imprison someone who never even bothered you? What's the point?

Drug treatment is not the responsibility of the tax payers.

Agreed on that point. I didn't notice in the initial post that paying for treatment was part of the deal. As far as I'm concerned, do your drugs, but when you become an addict, then pay the price, whichever price you decide to pay.

The legal stigma just puts people in prison instead of into rehabilitation, then when they get out they have even less reason to kick the habit, because now their situation is completely hopeless.

If someone is of a mind to use hard drugs, the "legal stigma" is not swaying their choice

It is not a matter of simply ingesting drugs. As the op suggested we should use that money to pay for their treatments. Also if these people get hooked on hard core drugs I may have to support their family through welfare payments and foodstamps, section 8 housing because they decided that getting high or tweeking was more important than taking care of their family.

Why do you want to imprison someone who never even bothered you? What's the point?
You want to me shell out cash to someone I do not know so they can get treatment. If I got to be shelling out cash I do not want to do it for their enjoyment.

And you both fail to pick up on one crucial aspect. what we have currently is a monstrosity of a drug problem whose cost is completely shouldered by the tax payer.

If it were legalized and taxed, then if you do not want to pay taxes for the problem, then you have a choice.. simply do not use and you are not paying taxes for the problem.
