Re: Should a Bed and Breakfast Owner be allowed to refuse Gay couples on religous gro

lets cut the crap and stop the nonsense

the poll was SHOULD A B A B owner be allowed

My answer was yes

Not because it is a good business decision

not becuase the law says yes or no

Merely because it is my opinion that is the right of a property owner

now you can engage in all t he mental self abuse you want but you are never going to prove my opinion is wrong or that what I value--personal property rights over even business sense--is WRONG

you can disagree with it but stop pretending you can prove an opinion wrong

I was Ed Clark's campaign chairman for New Haven many years ago so I understand the true libertarian philosophy. I am sure he wouldn't support such a law

I could care less about your opinion. Not allowing bigotry in business has little effect in the "rights" restriction argument. From a business position, such legislation has only a positive effect.

In fact; on my "i give a ****" list, protecting ones right to operate a business in a bigoted manner is very far down towards the bottom. Not as far as protecting someones right to yell fire in a crowded building. Seeing as both are illegal, there are far more troubling legislative imbalances that need to be corrected.

My opinion? I hoped they are fined. Wah Wah, you cant pwove my 'pinion wong. Happy to argue on your level:2wave:

Re: Should a Bed and Breakfast Owner be allowed to refuse Gay couples on religous gro

This is in England where a Christian B&B owner refused a homosexual couple accommodation. Should this be allowed or not? For those of you who haven't visited the UK, B&Bs are much more common over there and American style motels are rare. Many, many homeowners supplement their incomes by operating B&Bs in their homes.

Should they be forced to take in gay couples if it is against their religious beliefs?

No the owner should be sued and lose their B&B license. If the owner has idiotic religious "beliefs" then he's free to re-evaluate them and admit that they're stupid and amoral. If he chooses to assert idiotic beliefs, then that's his fault, not the patron's. Glad that we brought this cult member out of the closet. Hope he gets ****ed over in court. ;)

Beliefs based on ignorance deserve no respect. Next we'll have to start granting flat-earth believers a "right" to their beliefs.

No you put the right to be offensive and prejudiced above treating all members of society equally. That is all that this is about.

Nothing to do with property rights or business, that is just to hide behind.

more stupidity

why do lefties think because I defend freedom I support all actions that one can exercise in the pursuit of freedom

I support legalized prostitution but I would never engage the services of a prostitute

I think coke and weed ought to be legal-yet I would be disgusted if my son or niece were to be coke addicts

I support the freedom of a business owner to deny service to whom he wants to deny it to even if I would not

You haven't heard of Voltaire have you?

Actually I agree with you. The owner is an idiot, but (as personal a subject as this is to me) I agree that there's no real reason to prosecute her over this.

yep but i won't judge the man

if he is losing business by not serving gays then he is a poor businessman

If he is gaining business then he is a good business man

If he is willing to lose business based on his personal beliefs that doesnt make him an idiot but a man of conviction.

Re: Should a Bed and Breakfast Owner be allowed to refuse Gay couples on religous gro

really?

so if you are a hot chick it is wrong to turn down the advances of some fat drunken slob who tries to pick you up at a bar--that is discrimination

is it wrong for Yale or Amherst to turn down applicants with a 2.0 average and bottom 25% SAT scores? that is discrimination

is it wrong for Coach K to offer Duke basketball scholarships to only HS all-Americans or "blue chip" rated recruits rather than slow short guys who cannot dribble?

we discriminate all the time and the government should not be in a position of forcing someone to serve someone else

it might be wrong, it might be stupid, it might even be bigoted but it should not be illegal

Wrong.

Discrimination based on sexual orientation is illegal. Republicans need to realize their religious beliefs are NOT the law.

I say it makes him a man of idiotic convictions.

But I will still admit that it would just be a waste of time to prosecute him. Just don't patronize his business - it can only hurt him.

I am a civil rights and employment discrimination attorney, I have tried dozens of discrimination cases and sexual orientation is not a grounds under Title VII. That is why the military can boot gays. There are reasons for such discrimination above and beyond religion (I am agnostic I don't buy into gays being sinners btw)

And while I understand the law I do not agree with it. I believe owners of a business should be able to discriminate without being punished by federal law because I do not believe Title VII is a valid exercise of the powers properly delegated to Congress by the Constitution

Re: Should a Bed and Breakfast Owner be allowed to refuse Gay couples on religous gro

I think if someone wants to open a gay bed and breakfast and deny straight couples, that's ok too.

If I sank a LOT of money into a business, like a B&B, I think I would have every right to target the market of my choice. Be it gays, straights, bikers, Furries, Wiccans, Catholics, or whatever.

There's a big difference between targeting a business at a particular market and discriminating against law-abiding, prospective customers.

Of course you know that the case this thread is discussing is not subject to US, but to UK law. There it IS an offence to discriminate on grounds of sexual orientation. That's a law that protects heterosexuals who may wish to stay in a gay-run BnB too. I've stayed in gay-run BnBs in Blackpool and Brighton where straight guests were welcomed, actually made rather a fuss of.

And if he thinks he has the right to ignore the law, it will definitely make him a man who has convictions.

Yes they know, I have pointed it out - they just put more importance on the right to be rude and prejudiced than on equal rights - hark at Turtle Dude boasting about how the military can boot out gays.

They do not see such things as problems.

Despite it having zero to do with their law, they are unable to resist stating their preferences.

Who said anything about Republicans or religious beliefs?

Your prejudice is showing.

I am positive that there is at least one person out there who is:
  • Not at all religious.
  • A Democrat.
  • Discriminates against persons based upon their sexual orientation.

That said, I was under the impression that it is NOT illegal in the US to discriminate all you want IF your business receives NO public funds (as in, government grants, etc.).
Bad for business, yes, but not illegal.

Perhaps someone with the knowledge can correct me, if I am incorrect in this.

Re: Should a Bed and Breakfast Owner be allowed to refuse Gay couples on religous gro

A Bed and breakfast should have some duty of care to its customers.
They cannot really let them get to their establishment then eject them because of their sexuality.
They should have asked the question when they booked.

I'd like to book a double bedroom please
Certainly sir..are you gay?
What?
Are you gay Sir?

You are partially right; it is illegal to discriminate UNLESS you are a private organization completely, meaning not open to the public but only open to members who meet some requirement (such as a church group or the KKK or the Italian-American Opera Society or something -- after all, the 1st amendment also protects Freedom of Association).

Simply because you do not receive public funds does not make you a private organization; however receiving funds means you definitely are not.

Still, in most of America, it is still legal to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. That won't last too much longer, though.

My bad. I thought it was a US matter.

But....

In the UK, how can even they tell if they are gay or not?

Good point. British gays are KICK ASS! That's also a particular sexual practice that I DON'T want to go into here! ;)

I'm not sure on what basis you would deny the owner his right to exclude people from his property unless, of course, you reject the notion of private property altogether, in which case I would ask you to lend me your house, car, and wallet.

1. The owner of the property DOES NOT have the right to discriminate based on sexual orientation.
