Sushi chef, restaurant charged with serving endangered whale | Reuters

(Reuters) - A California sushi chef and the restaurant in which he worked have been charged with illegally serving meat from an endangered Sei whale, the Justice Department said on Thursday.

U.S. | Green Business

Kiyoshiro Yamamoto, 45, and the parent company of the popular restaurant The Hump in Santa Monica were charged late on Wednesday with violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act which makes it illegal to sell any kind of whale meat.

The case stemmed from informants who ordered whale meat at the restaurant in October 2009 and evolved into a sting operation by U.S. wildlife and customs officials who observed whale meat being served at the restaurant last week.

"Someone should not be able to walk into a restaurant and order a plate of an endangered species," U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said in a statement.

I'd eat it. :ssst:

I would try it at least once to see if I like it or maybe a whale steak.

I would not. Whales are sentient mammals, it would be like eating a slice of Hellhound.

I knew that whole salt thing was a slippery slope. As if THAT weren't bad enough, now they're telling us we can't eat whale??? What's next? Are they going to be confiscating my entire stock of imported Panda? I've tried my Oolong marinade with chicken and let me tell you, it does NOT work.

I agree with the statement and no I would not eat any whale, let alone a endangered one

Endangered ones probably taste better, though.

And how do you think they got to be scarce to begin with? By being yummy!

Through illegal mafia actions which auction off dinner of endangered species to high society!

Yeah, but every time we refuse to eat something made of meat, PETA wins.

Whenever we heard about a PETA protest at a restaurant, me and my friends go to the restaurant, get a window seat and eat the food obnoxiously so they take notice. Its fun to watch them get worked up.

Mmmmm tasty the rarity

Eh, I was never that interested in eating whale meat.

Although I suppose if you had nothing else...

(Note: I did not consider human flesh an option.)

I'd like to see what a hard-core animal rights activist, put in a position with only animals or people around (no vegetation, or only poisonous to humans vegetation) would do.
See if they die of starvation/poison from the vegetation or go cannibal before eating an animal...

Considering I went after Shamu the other night. Yeah I think I would eat whale once or twice.

To those that said "Yes." Why is it okay to eat something that is endangered? You're okay with the extinction of an animal, even if you're not starving and there's plenty of other things to eat?

If you are worried about it going extinct then find a way to mass produce it, domesticate it and find a way to make them grow faster with hormones.

I as under the assumption thought part of evolution was survival of the fittest and strongest.
