That he has restricted his opportunities to be successful in life and to select blue collar occupations. Or that he has no ambition to be anything other than a twenty year old. I know huge holes in the ears is what I look for in a judge, lawyer, doctor, teacher, "soldier," senator, CEO, cop, etc.
I'm going to school to be a pharmacologist. I highly doubt anyone will care about my appearance.

It depends on the setting you work in, and the part of the country. I'm sure it would matter in my area, but probably in many large cities it would be acceptable.

i think he must have good hearing, but then realise you were talking about ear lobes, then i start thinking the fun i could have with a hook and line

Ha ha, I should have said 'earlobes'! :rofl

Those who disfigure themselves with torture or tatoos, those who dress as clowns or hobos have little respect for themselves or others, those men who wear woman's jewery...I wonder about.....Its something strange, something to become used to...these oddballs will always be around.
Are they the lost souls of this generation?
If I were a business owner, my customers/clients would come first, if the oddball bothers them not, then I would tolerate it. But, when going thru the hiring process, ones strange appearance can be a minus.

I saw a slouching looking young man the other day at the supermarket. He had, in addition to the lip stud and tatoos, those earrings that make huge holes in ones earlobes.

What do you think when you see someone so attired?

Weird. Wonder if he's a pirate?!? ...weird.

Pardon me - disfigure themselves? You're kidding .. right?

I have a lot of self respect, what does that have to do with the fact that I have chosen to do something with my body that you have not? It's not a mark of horrible morals or anything else that would indicate that I think less of myself as a human being. Odd how you choose to view them.

What about those people who jump in the sack with every Tom, Dick and Harry. How about their self respect? No way to tell that of course. Unless you hold the belief that people with tattoos are promiscuous, in which case you'd be sadly mistaken. Good Lord... :doh

If I have misread or did not understand what you were saying above, please forgive me. Sometimes things are lost in text, but if I'm reading your post correctly, I can't hardly believe anyone would hold these beliefs.

Feh. Old people are funny.
My dad freaked out when I started getting tattoos.
He's an old hippie. To him, tattoos are for sailors and convicts.

Tattoos are for sailors and convicts, that's why your dad freaked out. It used to be that anyone who had a tattoo was not only a sailor, but had been a drunk sailor at least once.

What do I think when I see someone with National Geographic earlobes? None of the choices fit. I think, "What was he thinking, and why would anyone want to go around looking like that? I wonder if it hurt? Oh well, it's his ears and not mine."

Pardon me - disfigure themselves? You're kidding .. right?NO! I am not.
The human body is a beautiful thing to uphold, when its natural and well maintained(but do not look at mine - its a mess, and I am old..But for someone to enlarge the lobe or write on the body, this is disgusting..

I have a lot of self respect, what does that have to do with the fact that I have chosen to do something with my body that you have not? Cutious am I, what did you do?Well, if that is your reasoning and logic, there is no sense in trying to change it. I just find it to be strange and mindless..So many youngsters doing the same thing, no one thinking for themselves.. It's not a mark of horrible morals or anything else that would indicate that I think less of myself as a human being. Odd how you choose to view them.

What about those people who jump in the sack with every Tom, Dick and Harry. How about their self respect? By now, you know what I think about this, so what do you think?? No way to tell that of course.Simply ask more, a assume less. Unless you hold the belief that people with tattoos are promiscuous, in which case you'd be sadly mistaken. Good Lord... :dohI never said anything like that, I am simply saying that human disfigurement looks like hell, plus it must hurt, yet you talk about self-respect....

In this world, there are all kinds, as you age this will be discovered.

Damn, what caliber firearm made THOSE holes!

If they aren't bound by social norms, then they should have no problem being ostracized, marginalized and stigmatized by society.

Typically, they don't.
They're part of a counterculture, and that's the only "society" they care about.

The company I work for recently interviewed a guy for a decent paying salaried position. This guy was highly qualified and very intelligent. At least my boss who conducted the interview thought so. He recommended him for the position. Well they called him in for a second interview by two of the engineers in charge of our department. They where also impressed by his credentials except for one huge problem. The huge holes in his ears, his ear lobes were sagging and he had holes in his face from multiple piercings. He did not get the job. Not because they didn't like his earholes but because it was against company policy. They could not hire him and my boss knew it when he recommended him. He wanted them to see that we were missing out on an excellent opportunity in hopes that it would be a catalyst for changing company policy.

You can hang your coat hook in their ears.

I was always told as a kid to "use my head for something besides a hatrack".... I just assumed a coatrack was included in this advice.

More power to your boss;)

In an increasing numbers of industries- and not just service industries- moderate body modification is well tolerated.

I think some of you guys who responded with variations on "he must be unemployed" must live in some pretty sheltered places. I know lots of people with all kinds of tattoos and piercings and crap and while many of them do work in kitchens almost as many are employed in professional settings.

There's lots of very talented people who work at non-profit organizations and small creativity oriented businesses (graphic design firms, video editing studios, etc.) that could probably make more money at more mainstream businesses but choose not too so that they can pursue a lifestyle more comfortable to them.

The joke is on big stiff corporations because their smaller competitors are getting just as good (and sometimes better) work out of people for less money, and all they have to do is tolerate some nose rings.

My roommate manages multiple restaurants and makes 60k a year and has so many tattoos that she's been on the cover of tattoo magazines. Sometimes I think in big cities it's almost a disadvantage to not have lots of mods.

All I heard was "those rascally whipper-snappers!"

A whipper snapper would more likely be an arrogant, energetic, and cocky guy with a college degree that he thinks entitles him to an $80,000 a year job, right out of college.

No, this young fellow looked like an unemployed loser with low aspirations, other than getting high, getting tatted, and getting laid.;)

And ... this is what the holes in his ears told you?

Meh, why should I have to look at a freakshow when I go to work everyday?......;)

Well that's just stupid. Anyone that goes into an interview with the hopes of "being a catalyst for changing company policy" doesn't deserve the job; the interview is about getting a job, not taking a moral stance.

new coup for you said:

This is completely true. Outside of white collar jobs these things are pretty well tolerated.

Since I'm the boss they had better not say it.......

I agree, but generally these types need to make a 'statement'.......;)

That depends on the job.......;)

The first guy I dated after my divorce was 27 and had gauged ears. Tattoos, too. He's now in his 30s and an administrator with Social Security. He's extremely smart, literate, and motivated.

I don't judge people based upon decorative tattoos, etc. I've known way too many sharp, professional folks who have tats & piercings.

p.s. I find them kind of hot, actually.
