One thing I am noticing more and more about this forum is that nothing is ever resolved. People argue about various subjects, usually both sides will declare victory and nothing gets accomplished.

Am I alone in this?

Actually, I don't see both sides declaring victory any more. I see a lot of nothing getting accomplished. And these arguments will always go back and forth. Just as they have always gone on back and forth.

But what counts is what the majority of the people believe at any one time and the needs of the people and the government at that time. And some people change their minds over time. I know my beliefs certainly have changed from when I was younger.

So it's important that we have these debates. These debates allow all interests and groups to have a say in politics. They also help to develop some kind of solution to problems that are equitable to all involved. That way, power is shared instead of being relegated to one group at the expense of the opposing group.

But, yeah, for the most part, I think that people are gonna do whatever they want for whatever reason they can rationalize no matter the politics decided. That's why I see government as less politics and more as a controlled anarchy.

Nope, I have the same feelings about it that you do. It seems most people won't think about changing their mind and assume they are already 100% correct 100% of the time. I think it's the pride part of human nature  Typically when someone is losing a debate they deflect or make personal attacks, or worse yet just attack someone's position as being absurd. Debates are a good thing, but the mind is like a parachute, it's most useful when it's open.

There is always room for learning for open minded people...however...a debate isnt determined by the players...its determined by the judges/viewers.

Most of the issues that get kicked around here are age old battles. You cant HONESTLY EXPECT a few people on an internet blog to resolve questions that have plagued mankind since there was mankind can you?

Most of you have only been at this forum for less than a year. It's a little early to judge whether or not the debates will change your minds.

I used to favor a Federal ban on abortion. Now I'm mildly pro-choice.

I used to advocate an ideologically strict non-interventionist foreign policy. Now I believe foreign policy should be flexible.

I used to think gay people chose their sexuality. Now, I think it's a complex combination of genetics and environment.

Just stay open-minded and you'll definitely learn things.

It depends.

Debates can die for most people, if completely convincing truth proving one side of the debate comes to light.

But they won't die for everyone.

After all, I think there are some people who still believe the earth is flat...

No you are not. I have to say that the declaration that you have "won" in reality usually means quite the opposite at a debate board. One of the reasons I've never posted that idiotic declartion at a debate board in my life. ;)

True, the vast majority of debates cannot be "won".
Only argued to convince the opposing side, or more commonly, the viewers on the sidelines.

But I have learned a lot and altered quite a few views of mine over the years I have been at DP.

I've noticed over the years that the players change, but the game is the same. Nothing is resolved - it just gets blamed on someone else later on down the road. Nothing is fixed, it just becomes more and more fubar.

Same ****, different day.

Since I joined this forum I've sharpened my ability to illustrate my thoughts, I've learned a great deal on a variety of topics, I've refined why I hold the positions that I do, and yes I've changed my position on a few things.

Do debates ever end? For the individual they do, but like public school there's a constant inflow of newcomers, so the same subjects are gon over again and again.

Some are already dead.People just argue about them still.

If someone is arguing about it, then it ain't dead. It may in your opinion be dead...but your opinion is just that - an opinion.

That's just your opinion, though.

Ditto.
On a forum like this, you get to know a lot of people from different walks of life, and it can't help but broaden your perspective, if not change your mind.

I think, best case scenario, people who join debate forums in the right spirit end up with a more worldly and less narrow perspective.
Which can't be a bad thing to have.

For me, some areas remain constant, others have done a complete 180 since being here, and in some areas I've even done a complete 360, returning full circle to what I originally believed.

It's been a good exercise in seeing what my core beliefs are. I do find though that a lot of people come here to get the one up on others and to feed their ego trips. I can sometimes get trapped in the ego debates but for the most part I just come here to learn. Those that come here just to piss others off will never grow.

If you are coming here to change people's minds, you're wasting your time. Change your own mind.

I've never seen our role here in terms of getting anything accomplished, so I don't feel I have failed at anything.

I don't know if I'd say I have altered my views per se, but I have sure changed my opinion as to the nature of those who do and don't share them.

Disregard, I see you answered my questions later in the thread.
