The commercial value and military value isn't necessarily in the moonbase itself but rather the technologies that are developed because of the moonbase.

What technologies? How to dig better holes to shield from the harsh cosmic environment? Almost all the technology the United States needs to build a long-term presence on the moon is in existence now. Technological breakthroughs aren't required.

Just engineering.

Yeah but satellites are blah... a moon base has "cool" factor and the liberals could really rely on nationalistic pride to push the budget through.
How about a robotic moon base, no humans?

A robotic factory building robotic probes...

The truth is, a moon base is useless theres no scientific advantage to having a base on the moon except scientific prestige at having tons of money spent on you to do things you could be doing on earth.:rofl

You mean, having the ability to launch a planetary mission using no fuel at all compared to using 99% of the fuel at launch simply to get away from the earth isn't an advantage?

I don't know what you are referring to.

Saberhagen's Berserker universe. The alien doomsday machines were created by the Red Race and then wiped them out in their programmed mission to destroy all life everywhere.

Ah.

I was thinking more along the lines of scientific probes...

Right, but in such a generalized query, you are expected to make a few assumptions. I assumed the OP was wondering if we should begin to establish a base on the moon in the next decade or two.

Can't do that. The Messiah, harbinger of hope for the future, decided to cancel American efforts to research and develop future methods of manned space exploration because the Messiah has no vision beyond that of a low-level community organizer aparatchik cog who believes socialism actually works to help the common man.

Anyone who can be that wrong about history isn't going to be doing the right thing when it comes to space exploration.

How did that, in any way at all, pertain to anything I said or that has been said in this thread?

Or he knows a moon base is ****ing useless.

Like VeeGer in the first Star Trek Movie?

Point, although I don't clearly remember the explanation for how it morphed from just a space probe into a massive search for all knowledge...

And I was thinking more on a solar system scale, not galactic.

Yes....and then we should make the rest of the world pay rent for tagging along. It's our moon.

Or he knows a moon base is ****ing useless.

While he is certainly the world's foremost expert on the topic of being ****ing useless, that clearly disqualifies him from be able to determine if anything else is also ****ing useless.

The military/commercial/scientific/ facility that needs to be established on the moons is most bodaciously not useless, not if one wishes the human race to have a long term future as long term is defined in scales of stellar and galactic lifetimes. If you consider the ultimate future of the human race to be death on this one single planet, then yes, a lunar colony is useless. Otherwise, it is essential.

Veeger was interfered with by aliens, who had an interest in a petty trinket but no interest whatsoever in the race of aliens who would and could build such a thing. Star Trek never made any effort to make much sense.

Are you out of your mind?

What about the Klingons? Cylons? Storm Troopers? Bugs? Goa' uld? Aliens? Predators? Carrot Top? Sarah Palin?

As we all should know (unless you live in a cave) there are a many number of dangers in the Galaxy. Assuming that we can defend ourselves from planet Earth is foolish. No...a forward base is the answer.

Then having established one up there, let us deport all Politicians from every country up there and let them sort out the problems prior to being permitted to return to Earth.
Also let us deport all sexual deviants to Venus.

Bold part is a bad idea...

After all, there are rocks up there that could be dropped.

I don't see a problem with placing the sexual deviants on the same celestial body as the politicians.
