It would be a base where humans live and study astronomy long-term. Obviously, it would be expensive, but we would gain a lot of knowledge about the universe that we can't get here on earth.

Less expensive than current military spending. I am sure €250 billion could be saved from the military and spent on reducing debts(to lower interest rate payments) and putting a scientific base on the moon. The continuation of the base could be financed by the money you save on reducing interest payments on the debt.

No. Its an unnecessary and expensive expense.

Yes.

My reasons are:

I want us too.

Perfectly reasonable, no?

No. Its an unnecessary and expensive expense.

The money spend on the Iraq war could have created a huge scientific base on the moon, and mars, and created several space stations, and created many new space telescopes, a new shuttle program and other things..

So, what is actually wasted money?

Put things in perspective, thats what the peope of the US have great problems with these days... I would say also Europeans, but to a slightly lesser degree.

For some reason I think you are just spewing anti-American and anti-war trash rhetoric, plus I do not think you are accounting for long term costs of maintaining such bases and facilities.

Yeah, we could essentially take the cost curve of the ISS, and multiply it by 100...

If we could somehow find a way to decrease the cost of a moon base to more reasonable costs, we should. But we definitely should not bankrupt the world trying to get some scientific knowledge. It just wouldn't be worth it at that cost...

No. Right now, we need to be spending money on figuring out a cheap way to get payloads into orbit. Once we can cheaply put stuff in space, then we can figure out a cheap way to send robots to the moon. Then we can discuss putting people there.

The geyser method...

I agree, our science programs on earth are more important. Even more important is psychology.
Why do people take drugs?
Why are crimes committed?
Why do "normal men" hate?
I think the earth scientists just want to escape from all this.....hard to fault...

I would love the idea, so long as people don't make up some line in the Bible that says "thou shalt not build scientific bases on the moon."

Or that doing so is unconstitutional, or un-American, or elitist, or part of the "liberal media," or part of neoconservatism, or socialist, or marxist, or maoist, or stalinist, or neil armstrongist, or feminist, or sexist, or what have you.

I think we should.

Because I want too.

The only reason we went to the moon in the first place is because we didn't want the Russians to beat us there.

mmm ... Neil Armstrong walking on cheese.

Cheese.

Lunar Cheese brand is going to take the galaxy by storm.

Like what?

??????????????????????

No really...

Well I would say, maybe we could figure out how to actually colonize the moon safely if we need to.

If we really want to make an effort to expand, colonizing the moon is the next logical step right now, as well as exploring Mars more.

It depends. Would such construction be financed, operated, and maintained by the U.N., the U.S.A., a group of voluntary nations, or private businesses and organizations?

Me.

I can donate a couple hundred US dollars...

Colonize the moon to what purpose and ends? Are there resources to exploit on the moon? Do we need to live there just in case earth explodes?

And of course, we can't forget the politics/debates/wars that will go on over unobtanium.
