think how much money we would have here at home, if we quit subsidizing the rest of the World.

If they ask for help and need help and we are able to help then we should help. But the consequence of asking for help should be annexation. Then they wouldn't have to ask again every few years.

Good idea. America could be like the Worlds Pawn shop. --You want money, put your Country up as collateral, till you pay us back with interest.---I like it.

Our national debt, caused by fear, anong other things, should have little to do with this..
Haiti should be allowed to go "communist", if the Haitians think this will help..
Why is it that all our consumer goods are made in China ?
Having all of the people working, doing constructive things is the way to improve any nation, particularly ours..
I must admit, I do not really know what their problem is, does any Haitian know?
If so, then we may have the answer...
I do hope that none of the posters here are in any way, decision-makers.:doh

This is insane.
Haiti has nothing.
At least Japan has the quality of people and Saudi-Arabia has the oil, what does Haiti have ??

It is not worth the investment, in fact it can do nothing but lose.....;)

Cool, as I have been told, "If you have nothin, you have nothin to loose"---we should just move on.

The rebuilding efforts of Haiti will be massive and will take "years".

Yes we could, but can we really? Let's play this out. We're in a deep recession. Our government has now been spending money faster than ever and has committed 4 Trillion dollars in various forms in the past year. The US is still in two active Middle East occupations. We're printing money without much backing and we're in hock to China up to our ears and it's getting worse not better.

While International attention to Haiti right now is key and the devesationin Haiti is only now starting to be realized, how can the United States in our current economic condition pledge money we do not have to rebuild? We're not going to rebuild their dirt floor hovels with rusted tin roofs either. Not only that, an entire infrastructure of business has to be rebuilt; telecommunications, networks, roads, electricity, water systems, I mean the whole thing has to be done from the ground up.

My view here is we American's can't afford it, and while we'd like to just run up our debt to rebuild Haiti over the next 4-5 years and pledge hundreds of millions of dollars maybe billions of dollars (these people have to eat, have clean water, get medical care, get an education while the rebuilding is going on), I think it should be up to the American people, directly, to pledge money for Haiti. Not the government putting our country in deeper debt, but individuals who have the means to help can. How? One way is the IRS tax forms we get each and every year, a direct withdraw of money from an account of any amount of dollars can be submitted. That money goes directly to a management fund which spends the money for Haiti. Those who do not have the means or wish not to or already have donated, can opt out. Our government shouldn't spend the money, but we the people should if we can. And those American people will need to pledge often and for years to come.
do you seriously think america is there to "rebuild" haiti. they are there to build a military presence to project u.s. "business interests".

Add to that list pretty much every country in Central America and Africa.

There is one nation in Central America with above average prosperity - El Salvador, I think..
Why is this?
Haiti has been a problem child for years..
Its really an Africian "nation" and is on their level of developement.
So, yes, deficiet or not ,we should help.
We are humans, right?
But this help has to be very well thought out.
And this is very difficult.
Haiti must help itself, easy to say.
But how to do this?
We must has historians who know how man progressed.
But does Haiti wish to "progress"?

What if we didn't help Haiti? It would be hard to convince anybody that it had nothing to do with racism. It would be obvious.

We don't need that reputation.

So they get to play the race card?.....

What do any of the Caribbean islands have?
It COULD have tourism dollars coming in, if their govt would go in that direction.

We don't need anything China has.....
We can make anything we want right here in the USA, just like we did prior to the last twenty years....
I will stilll take a Craftsman wrench over Chinese bust your knuckle crap any day.....;)

One such ****hole is New Orleans....I was there recently. The people are very pleasant. They realize that tourism is their main source of JOBS.
That concept is not hard to pass on to places like Haiti.....

Not the ones I still have from 30 years ago.....;)
Try getting a year out of a Chinese wrench....;)
They''ll get it right when they figure out that rice has no role in the Bessemer process.....

I have a bunch of them as well....the only tool that I have been unhappy with is some of their ratchets. But, they always replace them without question.

A few farm aid like concerts a year should do the job ; if that don’t work put it before Bernie Maddoff that he gets ten years off his sentence if he can come up with a scheme that don’t involve tax-payer dough. ;)
