I've never heard anyone say that before. It's mildly insensitive, since it perpetuates racial stereotypes, but it's not a big deal.

It is racist as hell

I agree. I wouldn't say it around a group of strangers, because I wouldn't want to offend anyone. But my roommate and I say **** like that (and worse) all the time to each other, just because it's funny.

So you are a closet racist?

Its perhaps a tad offensive, but not racist

For example, a Thai Buddhist or an African atheist can convert to Judaism.

Nah, racial humor is just funny as long as you only use it around people who you know aren't going to be offended. My roommate and I jokingly use racial slurs on each other all the time (we're both white). Perhaps you need to lighten up a bit. ;)

I do not find racism funny and as long as there are people that think racism is ok in this country? Racism will never go away. So you keep getting your kicks off being a jerk and I will keep hoping for the day that racism is no longer an issue in my country.

I am of the thought that you can still have a wicked sense of humor without having to bring race into something. Of course I am mature like that. :2razz:

Except we aren't talking about racism, we're talking about racial jokes and stereotypes.

How is it being a jerk? I don't care if my roommate uses some racial slur at me, and I'll probably find it funny. Likewise for him.

It seems you drive a hard bargain. :)

I'm 90% certain it doesn't offend most libs.

.

No reason to bring partisanship into this at all.

I'm Jewish. I've heard it. It annoys me when I hear it from someone who is unaware of my religion, though I believe that intent is an important factor in this.

It's an old phrase that really has no offensive meaning, except to those who are looking for things to get offended by. People need to lighten up.

I slightly agree. I grew up with the phrase and it wasn't meant to be bigotted. However, now that I'm grown :) and have Jewish friends, I no longer use it. I do find most Jewish people to be good business people and maybe they should be complimented by the phrase, but I don't want to chance offending them.

i voted for the second choice.

here's another to think about. just "nigger rig it" or a variation there of.

African American engineering is the proper term these days....;)

My friends and I actively reference, "bring jewed" in terms of money and power. We also reference, "Motza balled" if you're manhood has come into question by a Jew

Is it something that happens so often you came up with a phrase for it?

It is not like Kandahar is going around lynching niggas or running around kicking chinks. You need to calm down. I don't think Kandahar thinks his race is literally superior to others(Remember? That is what racism is). He's just not concerned about race to the point where he can use racial slurs and not do any of the other **** that actual racists do. Lenny Bruce would be proud.

Considering the number of Jewish girlfriends I had when younger, I tend to think of other things when I read the term "jewed me down".

Of course, I add the word "wildly" at the end.

It doesn't really bother me. There are ethnic idioms I use myself (Indian-giver etc.) that fall into the same category.

There is no intent to offend. Anyway it is a dying saying. It has almost got to the point it is a quaint saying give it another 50 years i probably will be considered archaic.

Man, have we ever changed! Twenty years ago, no-one would even bother asking.
IMO, we have become overly politically correct.
This phrase (jew down) is just old common usage, I see nothing evil, bad, insulting about it at all. In another twenty years it may just die out.

A buddy of mine used this the other day. He's an electrician and owns his own business. He was talking about how some customers try to jew him down on prices, and other aggravations of running his business. There aren't many Jews around here, so I know he was using this phrase as an idiom, not because he's a bigot. Plus, I know he's not a bigot.

What do you think of the phrase?

It is racist in nature. I am not offended by it since I am not Jewist and I would not use the term. Sounds similar to the phrase "nigger rig" in which it is a phrase that is synonymous with "Jerry rig". Usually only racist use the term nigger rig and everyone else uses the term Jerry Rig. Which implies something that is fixed very cheaply or fixed with rigged materials that is not the usual parts used to fix that particular thing. An example of example Jerry rigging would be making a tattoo pen with a guitar string, bic pen, a motor and wires from a remote control race car and a bent spoon and some duck tape or electrical tape and some wires and a d cell battery instead of actually using tattoo pen parts.

I call that using old fashioned Irish Ingenuity.

"Jerry-rig" is probably a conflation of "jerry-built" (shoddy, poorly constructed) with "jury-rig" (running repairs from what's available) Jerry-built dates to 1880's Liverpool, and a builder called.........Mr Jerry! Jury-rig is a nautical term. Neither has any connection to Germans or Jews.
