I've always been a supporter of the idea to let airline pilots keep a loaded pistol in the cockpit area of the plane for the safety of the passengers as well as the staff. This idea has been around for awhile, and Ron Paul even introduced a bill to do just that about a year ago. So what do you think, good idea or bad idea?

As long as they are trained as to the situation of weapons in an airplane I'm cool with it. I doubt my girlfriends father a retired airline pilot would want to deal with more regulations and trianing on top of the FAA regs.

I think everyone, flight crew, passangers, ground crews should be armed.

Provided the weapon in question is located with ceramic rounds that cannot pierce the hull of the aircraft; I see nothing wrong with it.

I feel everyone should be armed. Why just the crew. We all need to learn to protect what is ours. The gubment can't possibly do it for us. ---Then when things calm down, we can leave our guns back above the mantle, till needed again.

It's already a reality and has been since Bush's first term.

As long as steps are taken to insure that the weapon can't damage the aircraft and the pilots are trained in its use it sounds like a fine idea to me. I wonder if tasers might not be a better choice though. They're much less likely to injure innocent passengers/crew and also less likely to damage delicate instrumentation.

In either case I'm not sure if you could get the pilots behind it though. They already have to go through a ton of crap to be certified to fly. I'm not sure they'd be in favor of more.

The program already exists and armed pilots are currently flying passenger planes.

Yes pilots should be armed.

I personally think that it is a good idea, but I doubt the pilots would think so as carrying a firearm would bring a lot of extra responsibility. Just imagine a drunk on the plane starts something and begins threatening people. Would a member of the flight crew not be obligated to bring out the gun if the flight attendants couldn't easily restrain him?

Absolutely!

Most airline pilots have military experience so, they are familiar, or were at one time, with firearms. They are extremely responsible. Train them and establish a solid set of SOPs and future hijackers would have to totally rethink their plans. Also, keep in mind that all airline cockpit doors are now reinforced and locked.

Let's roll!

Should be up to the pilot.

I doubt a few bullet holes are going to cause the plane to depressurize. Also, I've never heard of ceramic bullets. How is their stopping power? Ceramic material can be strong but I wonder about shrapnel If it shatters.

No, pilots are responsible for flying the plane and keeping it stable. Having armed security on planes is what air marshals are for and I support having one on every plane in international airspace.

I think all the seats should be converted to electric chairs, with the exception of First Class of course!

What do you think is a good idea, Rabbit?

Finally caught someone's attention ;)

This program already exists and pilots are already carrying handguns; and have been since Bush's first term.

This thread baffles me. I'm not sure why people want to allow pilots to do something they're already allowed to do.

Even more baffling is that anyone think the pilots would open the door to the cockpit if there were an event.

Any guns that are in the cockpit will remain in the cockpit, behind that locked door. The only time the gun would be used is if someone forced entry into the cockpit.

Although many people would love the idea of a pilot storming out of the cockpit, gun drawn ready to go dirty harry on a would be terrorist, it will never happen.

thats why my electric chair idear would work, the pilot would just have to put on the fasten seat belt sign then flick a switch:lol:
