right....but the didn't have a stronghold in recent times, so how could they have lost it?

I'm not sure that the question specified a time period. At least, as Aunt Spikey typed it here, it didn't specify recent times, or any particular time period.

There were lots of southern whites who voted for Obama because they were fed up with the Bush mantra. Well, now we have the Obama mantra. Let's see how things turn out in 2012.
yes, let's. and i'm not so sure there were "lots of southern whites" who voted for obama.

Answer #5 is wrong, It's # 1 & 2

Funny, because if I selected #1 or #2 I'd have lost 2 points on the test.

Union members in general have been in decline and have never been strongly held by any political party. . . they are very diverse.

If the Democrats never had a strong hold on union members like you said then how could they have lost something they never had?

You would be surprised. I live in a farming community, and farmers normally vote Democrat. They may hate blacks with a passion, but they will make an exception, knowing that the Democrat Party has historically supported farmers via farm subsidies. Free cheese just brings 'em in.;)

I got the answer. The southerners and catholics has already been discussed. Though it is interesting that if you trace the history of the democratic party all the way through the 1960s, it dominated the south. Now the Republican party dominates the south in the same way the democrats used to.

But union support in the golden age of union power, the 1940s to the 1970s(unsurprisingly also the golden age of America), was overwhelmingly pro-democrat. Unions still tend to support the democrats, but that support has waned a great deal, so that now democrats still do better with unions but do not have the historical domination that they used to.
