Muslims are offended by stuffed pigs.

Oh please. It takes alot to offend me.

OT I just pity the father, using a dead son for political purposes

Since it says "muslim terrorists" they shouldn't be. Unless of course they think of themselves as terrorists? In which case I could care less. Now if it had said "killed by Muslims" then I could see it as not being right. Fact is the boy was killed by muslim terrorists.

Personally I think that it is sad when facts and truth are hidden, denied, and obscured just for the sake of not trying to offend a particular group.

And of course everyone in the US would see this difference. You remember what happened after 9/11?

The FBI data suggests a 1,600-percent surge in anti-Islamic hate crimes in the days following the Sept. 11 attacks. The research also found a similar increase in hate crimes against people who may have been perceived as members of Islam, Arabs and others thought to be of Middle Eastern origin.

Just the mere mention of an ethnicity and some Americans goes bonkers. Although, I think only a fringe minority of these Americans exists, it's still too many in this country.

Well I do recall that in the U.K. that Winnie the Pooh and Piglet are now banned in offices because some Muslim got offended, and we all remember the riots over the Danish cartoons. The point of the matter being who gives a **** if some people are offended, it's still the truth, it was Muslim extremist terrorists who perpetrated the crime, and to think that we shouldn't bring up the identity of the enemy is just more head in the sand namby pamby bull****. If the sign read murdered by Muslims the detractors may have a point but it clearly says Muslim TERRORISTS.

So, 18 people here blindly avow their "free speech", no matter what.
I for one have little respect for these Islamics...they can go to hell with their silly religion and their koran.
But to disgrace one's memorial , even with the truth, is not right...
This forum, the Internet is the place to emote.
NOT on a memorial..
Whatever happened to good taste, respect, for the dead ??
The so-called "music" of this age is terrible as well.

If you were the father, would you want your son to be known as the boy who was "murdered by muslim terrorists"? Or would you want your son to be remembered for who he was, what good deeds he done, why your son is an inspiration to the community?

Would you really want to remember your son through the violent acts of islamic extremists?

I would want the world to remember that Islamic terrorism is a threat to the lives and liberty of every man, woman, and children in this country in order to help insure what happened to my son doesn't happen to anyone else.

No one is going to forget 9/11, if that's what you're worried about...

What if someone had an inscription that said "Murdered by a black drug-dealer"? You don't think that would offend black people who WEREN'T drug-dealers? :doh

Wouldn't bother me at all.

I don't see why the religion/race/ethnicity of the terrorists needs to be specified. They're terrorists, period. What next? "Murdered by Christian terrorists" on some abortion doctor's memorial? Or "Murdered by an American terrorist" for vitims of the Oklahoma City bombing?

What is the point?

How to put this...

I think that the reason that the mere mention of stuff like this and people being offended by it is because we have allowed them the opportunity to be offended. Instead of telling them "oh well big deal" we apologize to them, we hide behind politically correct terms. We let them make a big deal about it.

This one video shows how asinine it has become.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc1zGRUPztc"]YouTube - The Black Hole - Commissioner John Wiley Price[/ame]

The only way to fix this is to tell them..."Oh well" and ignore their outbursts.

Anyone bother to think this through, or is it just liberal knee-jerk-can't-offend-anyone-especially-the-muslims nonsense that makes a mockery of truth?

The article in the OP says:

"Eight years ago, 23-year-old James Gadiel worked for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 103rd floor of the World Trade Center. He died when a hijacked plane crashed into the North Tower."

So is the young man being memorialized by the town because he worked for Cantor Fitzgerald?

Kinda doubtful.

So, fifty years from now, the people of the town will walk by and see a memorial to Jim and wonder, "what the hell did he do to earn this plaque?"

The only thing of note in his life is his murder.

Hmmm...

....well, who murdered him?

Muslim terrorists.

And Islam i was the dominant factor in the thinking of those terrorists, so it's not irrelevant, quite the opposite. James Gadiel was a victim of islamic hatred, and there's nothing wrong in pointing that out as yet one more shameful fact of Islam's history.

What do you people want to do, whitewash history so that only European Christians are the villians?

This makes sense.
There are other more effective ways of avenging a senseless death.
This forum is one.
Another is energy independence - buy NO OIL from any Islamic/Arab/Muslim.
Another is to support our war against the Islamics.
But no memorial should ever be de-faced, even with the word "Muslim" or Islamic..

You can make it clear what happened to the guy, without being a dick about it. Lots of places have things like "In loving memory of John Smith, who died in the tragic events of September 11, 2001." Things like that are fine. There is no need to be a douche and gratuitously piss people off.

There's something wrong with being specific?

Saying what actually happened, in plain English makes his father a "dick"?

So let me get this straight....Hate crimes are dismissed by "oh well big deal"?

Erecting this memorial with the words "Murdered by Muslim Terrorists" will only fuel the fringe extremists who have conducted those hate crimes. It will give them a sense of legitimacy to their prejudice.

Yes. SOME Muslims got pissy about it.
It is up to the common sense of the society, politicans and the law to rule against a fringe minority trying to cause trouble.
If we all look hard enough, we could find many things that insult or offend us.
The problem isn't with the minority of crazies to me because they will always be there, it is those who allow that minority to overrule the majority.
Ah yes, the danish cartoons. Who can forget it? It was on my news constantly.

It makes no sense to me whatsoever why the father wants that on the inscription as 'the guy who was killed by terrorists', that is not respecting the dead. Is the father scared that 9/11 will be forgotten? It won't. The consequences of that day will be felt for decades.

Since when is stating the truth considered a "hate crime"? We are talking about speech here. Not crimes.

And while it might "fuel the fringe extremists" it can also have the effect of fueling people against the fringe extremists. And since there are more non-extremeists it could very well overwhelm them to the point of canceling out any fuel that they gather from this.

Whose speech? The father? No. It's not up to the father. It is a public memorial, it's "speech" is decided by the city officials.

Simple solution is to not include the plaque and avoid the problem altogether. Why go thru the hassle?

Right.... that's what we should have done with the Viet Nam memorial, Right?

Wouldn't want to offend any Vietnamese with that big black wall with 50,000 names on it would we?

Apparently the father does have a bit of a say as according to the article if he doesn't "give this up" they will just not put the memorial up.

Town officials call the phrase too controversial for a small town memorial, and they recently voted against erecting the plaque if Gadiel insists on the language.

This is PC in action. Nothing more. Nothing less. It's sad that once again PC attitudes suppress truth.

What Crunch said.
