What do you think? It looks as if these kids were in on this hoax. Do you think they should be taken into custody?

Should Balloon Boy Parents Lose Kids? - The Early Show - CBS News

(CBS) The Heene family's saga of a loose balloon and a 6-year-old boy riveted the nation last week. The boy was found unhurt, but the saga continues as new questions surface -- this time of child welfare -- amid police statements that the entire balloon incident was a hoax.

Wendy Murphy, a former prosecutor, addressed on "The Early Show" a growing concern for the family: Can they stay together?

Murphy said parents, Richard Heene and his wife, Mayumi, don't have to be charged with a crime in order for Protective Services to come in and take their children away.

"All they have to have is evidence of neglect or abuse," she said. "And boy, I think they've got plenty of that here."

Why? The child was never in danger.

No, I was responding to the question posed in the thread.

The authorities don't like it if adults get kids to help commit a crime. That's the argument.

Even though they were idiots, no one was put in danger or appears to have been abused.

Monitoring is the way to go. Breaking up the family would be petty and nothing but revenge.

They certainly need to be monitored, any parent who would use their child in a publicity stunt might also use their child in something more dangerous. They need to be charged for every penny used by state and federal authorities in chasing down the balloon, plus any other penalties involved in purposely launching a large balloon into air-traffic's way. Jail time wouldn't be a bad idea either.

The authorities can piss off.

No one was put into danger. The kids were not in some grave peril. The most is that they learned how scary it is to lie to EVERYONE.

It's a done deal. Make them pay for the public services used and do some community service. Then move on.

I still don't understand exactly what crime was committed here... No. Removing a kid from his parents without any inkling of physical abuse is the highest form of retardation.

CPS has too much power these days. Children are removed from homes over nothing.

No he should not be removed. He was never harmed.

Well that's just it. There's no law that says a parent can't be stupid. Nobody was hurt.

If he owes money for being stupid that's a different situation.

I concur Jallers, I would only add, the parents should be taught how to use a condom responsibly:)

one parent's "stupid" is another parents religion

It is the minimum characters needed to post.

You're a character, and so are most of the others here at Debate Politics...

I think if two or more characters are gathered in his name, he will be amongst us. :2razz:

*We* don't have enough evidence to even consider this question. As it stands now from what the public knows, there is not just cause to remove the children.

But I will say this. Kids don't just vomit each time they're asked a specific question that could get their parents in trouble unless they are scared to death. It could be that Falcon is just a sensitive little kid who wants to protect dad, or it could be that Falcon knew he was going to have the crap beat out of him (or worse) for his slip up. I do think the family should be monitored, but not necessarily because of the hoax. My gut tells me there's something wrong in that family, and it's not just the father's need for attention. The hoax may just get CPS in the door, and I support that.

There's no evidence for CPS to get involved over through. He shouldn't be monitored. The family may be ****ed up, but welcome to America. Less there is evidence that the child was actually abused, there ain't **** we can justly do.
