For the most part I had trouble picking a favorite because they are all quality women, Michelle Obama being the one that hasn't really built a complete history yet. I had to go with Nancy Reagan being first because of her class and dignity, with Laura Bush being a close second because of her work towards education, but I hate playing favorites and this whole list has contributed much to their postitions over the years.

I liked Laura Bush much more than her husband. I liked Betty Ford, and while a lifelong Democrat, I really came to appreciate Gerald Ford later.

I never warmed to Nancy Reagan. I was too young to think much of Jackie Kennedy other than she was pretty and gracious.

Lady Bird was a good First Lady.

I think most of the ladies listed are/were wonderful, it was a tough choice. It seems Americans had some so-so Presidents, but have really lucked out on First Ladies.
i liked hillary very much, and laura bush for different reasons. michelle obama could be my winner, but the story isn't yet written.

It really is a personal choice, so I can't fault people for their opinions, Nancy Reagan was never seen as warm by some in public, but she was very dignified.

Dignified in what way? When she was consulting with Miss Cleo?

Didn't say she was sane now did I? ;) What I liked about her was that things were done with class, she wasn't overly political, and proper protocol mattered.

It was her bearing. She stood tall and erect and proper, wore fashionable clothes that where not overly flashy, and always seemed in control of herself.

Much better said than I, thanks.:2wave:

I couldn't take Nancy Reagan because the "Just say No" thing was dumb and pointless. I'd probably have to go with Laura Bush, though she has the advantage of being recent and me knowing what she had done. But Laura Bush was probably the best thing about the Bush administration. Michelle Obama I think it's too early to say anything about how she was as first lady, and I haven't seen her do anything worthwhile.

And that's why she's leading this poll???? Good golly.... :doh

Of course, the first lady is not a ruling position, more of a diplomatic one.

Yes, of course.

I just can't understand why someone would pick her over Laura Bush, for starters, and nothing said here so far has managed to make me think otherwise.

The President calling his wife 'mommy' never sat too well with me regarding Reagan.

:rofl I don't remember that, but I s'pose it would sound a bit creepy. However since our son was born, my husband calls me "mama," and I call him "papaya" (long story having to do with something some weird woman named her bird lol).

I thought Nancy was very graceful, and it was obvious she was completely in love with "Ronnie." I think she suited her position well as first lady. She got involved in the things she should have been involved with and kept her nose out of things she didn't belong in. She is intelligent and dignified. She reminds me a lot of my mother in law.

However, I think she probably sucked as a mother, but the question wasn't "Favorite First Mother."

I love them both to be honest, it was a very difficult one and two pick for me and it was less than a percentage of difference, they are both lovely women and again, I don't like picking favorites.

Thank god that Sarah Palin is not on the list because she ant very smart at all.

I wasn't aware that Scott Palin was running for President...

I went with Jackie Kennedy, since she was the hottest.

Smart as an ant, or dumb like an ant. Well, ants are suprisingly strong for their size, perhaps Sarah Palin is as well? To be a woman in Alaska must be extremely difficult, what with all the bears prancing around in the bush. Bears eat ants too, I have seen this. Ants must taste relatively good to bears, but I think that they are spicy. Ants must be pretty smart compared to other insects though... they can find food in the most out of the way places and get all their buddies there to grab some grub and, well, that seems pretty smart. Palin and ants. Well, this was a great post jr602as, it really got me thinking for a change about something other than the birds and the bees...

I'm amazed! Nancy is the frontrunner!

Yeah, its hard to think of a First Lady that was just downright embarrassing. They've done a good job of representing America thus far. Let's just hope we don't get a young, single male president who hooks up with Paris Hilton.

Jacqueline Kennedy

Nancy Regan FTW!
