If Health Care Reform Passes, Will Things Get Violent?

Do You Think The Right Will Get Violent?

The people who are most likely to get violent in any situation are young people. These also happen to be the people *least* likely to be against the health care reform.

I'm not worried.

This by itself doesn't mean anything, but when you look at it with all of the other things going on, it's definitely something to worry about.

You mean like all the craziness around the 2000 " he stole the election" from the left?

Man this whole line is stupid. People are angry, so what? People have been bat **** crazy since the election of Clinton and both sides are taking turn.

The only thing different here is what looks like your addiction to leftist coolaid drinking.

Why is the question "Will the Right get Violent?" I would assert that there is just as much anger and frustration on the Left over the apparent death of the Public Option. In some of the town halls people were yelling and protesting about that, and not the idea of "government run health care."

Most likely, we will see some reform, but nothing that really means much. After that the Dems will declare a victory and go into the midterms. Right now the split over the issue is among the Democrats, all but creating three factions, none of which want to unite, and none of which can pass anything alone.

Ha! No...

America's young people are vaginas. They wouldn't revolt even if the government jackboot was inches away from their neck.

Are you denying that young people are, on average, much more violent than older people?

How do you know that, since the "government's jackboot" is firmly on the ground, and no threat to any one except possibly criminals?

Violent does not equal brave. Any violent coward can rob an old lady or shoot a rival gang-member in a drive-by.

It takes another kind of person to openly wage war against the US government.

Right, no danger to anyone except those nasty ol' "criminals"...

Now you are suggesting that waging war against the US government is "brave". Noted.

FYI, this thread (to my understanding) wasn't about whether a Civil War was about to break out, but whether a bunch of disgruntled conservatives would go balistic and start doing crazy violent things if health reform passed. I answered accordingly.

Health care in the USA sucks, with regards to insurance and how they screw you over, at least. Doctors in the USA are really good, especially for surgery, but they are next to clueless about alternative procedures, they simply prescribe anti-biotics or whatever the pharm complanies are dishing out as the people serve as an evolving test lab. Universal health care is a really good idea, as a Republican who lives in a nation with Universal health care now, I see the error of the US system more clearly. People need to step back and see it for what it can and will be, not for some socialist conspiracy...

Brave and foolish are often times the same thing, young Padawan.

Anyway, my point was although young people may be more prone to violence this does not necessarily mean they are more prone to revolt, as the latter would require some form of testicular fortitude instead of the generalized ability to mow down toddlers with a Mac-10.

Uhhhh, good job?

Universal healthcare can be obtained in the private market without a "public option."

Imagine if we allowed insurance companies to compete across state lines, and bought plans for people upon birth. In such a case, most pre-existing conditions would be eliminated. If you add with that some basic legislation that forbids insurance companies to drop people in most scenarios it would allow the government to focus on the truly "uninsurable" rather than the "uninsured." That number is much smaller, much easier to manage, and would be much more cost effective in my view.

It is not that people do not want to see reform, they simply do not want to see this type of reform in my opinion.

Dude, cut out the personal attacks. It's obnoxious.

The tone and tenor of the discussion seems more strident, angrier, and has incidents of intimidation that didn't exist in 2000. No one brought guns to rallies back then that I ever heard of, or threatened they would next time. Let me ask you, what signs would worry you?

No the tone is not, MH, no matter how much you want to quiver with fear. What? One guy brought a gun OUTSIDE of a rally, and you're scared of civil war.

For 8 years, we put up with Bush is Hitler, Bush is a Murderer, Bush is a War Criminal .... etc yet a bunch of middle aged family people march peacefully (without leaving a mess behind for Goodness sake), and suddenly things could get violent.

You aren't used to them protesting.

You aren't used to the opposition having a voice without being stifled by claims of racism.

Calling them ignorant didn't work.

You can't shut them up, and it scares you.

The fact is, many of you WANT them to get violent so you can proclaim your superiority over those "stupid hillybilly conservatives."

Some census worker gets hung and three letters FED scrawled across his face, and Goldendog is over on BN suggesting it's congruent with the 9/12 rally, and that the hanging suggests racism. Little matter that the people who collect census info are not usually federal agents, they're just part timers looking to make a few hundred bucks/week over the course of 3 months.

LibLady is in another thread suggesting that the millions of Rush Limbaugh listeners are too stupid to understand satire (psssst: his listeners got it, Liblady, your ilk DIDN'T).

And here you are making the assumption that something's in the air that suggests if HCR is passed, conservatives will turn violent.

Well mlm to all of you. There's your violence. Stop making fun of them. Listen to them, and they won't have to shout. Get that clown in the White House to recognize that he's not King and that the conservatives have something to say. He promised bi-partisanship. But he won't listen to anyone but his yes men!

The tenor and tone of the threads coming from YOUR side suggest something. It suggests something prejudice on YOUR part.

No the tone is not, MH, no matter how much you want to quiver with fear. What? One guy brought a gun OUTSIDE of a rally, and you're scared of civil war.

It isn't just that. It's things like people having signs that say "we come unarmed... this time", it's the birther movement trying to argue the president is illegitimate. It's that Obama has gotten several hundred percent more death threats than Bush got. It's how much people are talking about how the very government and their opponents are evil. It's the conspiracy about FEMA death camps. There seems to be this whole wellspring of anger just waiting to be tapped.

For 8 years, we put up with Bush is Hitler, Bush is a Murderer, Bush is a War Criminal .... etc yet a bunch of middle aged family people march peacefully (without leaving a mess behind for Goodness sake), and suddenly things could get violent.

As opposed to all of the Obama is Hitler, Obama is a Socialist, Obama wants to brainwash our kids crap? Like I said, there's so much more going on than you want to admit.

You aren't used to them protesting.

You aren't used to the opposition having a voice without being stifled by claims of racism.

Calling them ignorant didn't work.

You can't shut them up, and it scares you.
Do you live that far in La La land? Firstly, the racism claim was pretty irrelevant anyways before Obama, so it can't be something I'm used to. Secondly, there might be a small handful of people decrying racism when its not there, as opposed to hordes of people claiming they're being called racist when they're not. Many people claim that all attacks on Obama are labeled racist when that's not the case. It's a way to deflect the blame. I am used to conservatives having a voice... if you remember, they won the last two presidential elections. I'm not scared because I can't shut them up, I'm scared because there's an entire powder keg there waiting to go off.

For the last 40 years, the conservatives have set the tone of the conversation. Ever since Nixon tapped into the anger of the white middle class to win elections, they've been in charge. When Democrats did win, they were weak, ineffectual moderates like Carter and Clinton. Now a genuine progressive wins, someone who actually wants to take the country in a new direction, and that scares them. Then you have people spreading lies and making it worse, tapping into that anger to win vote or rating. You have the birthers, the deathers, you have people trying to claim that Obama is an Unamerican Socialist, and you don't see how this can blow up? Get real! We're talking about a certain group of people losing control of the discussion after being on top for 40 years, damned right there's a danger here.

The fact is, many of you WANT them to get violent so you can proclaim your superiority over those "stupid hillybilly conservatives."
As opposed to those conservatives that proclaim their superiority over those latte-sipping liberals? Don't act blameless. Your side is just as bad.

You are a liar. Goldendog never suggested racism, he suggested anti-governmentism. And can you honestly deny that is one possibility? The guy was still a federal employee.

LibLady is in another thread suggesting that the millions of Rush Limbaugh listeners are too stupid to understand satire (psssst: his listeners got it, Liblady, your ilk DIDN'T).
So you respond by insulting liberals. What's your point here?

And here you are making the assumption that something's in the air that suggests if HCR is passed, conservatives will turn violent.
I mentioned it as a possibility. Do you honestly think there's no possibility at all?

Well mlm to all of you. There's your violence. Stop making fun of them. Listen to them, and they won't have to shout. Get that clown in the White House to recognize that he's not King and that the conservatives have something to say. He promised bi-partisanship. But he won't listen to anyone but his yes men!
You spend half this point making fun of liberals and you think you have any room to talk? We've let them say what they want, no effort has been made to shut them up, yet you act all persecuted! We recognize Obama's not the king and many on the left are criticizing him, it just doesn't fit into your worldview so you're dismissing it in the interest of truthiness! Obama has watered down his health-care proposal, what more do you want that you realistically expect to get?

The tenor and tone of the threads coming from YOUR side suggest something. It suggests something prejudice on YOUR part.

Prejudice against whom? I grew up in a small blood-red farming town far up in the Sacramento Valley. I want to say my home town voted Republican by a good 30%. I'm very familiar living a conservative's world. Stop trying to deflect all blame and accept the fact that your side isn't perfect.

Excuse me but all I suggested is that both events happened on the same day.

It has been reported in the news...the man was killed on 9/11 and his body was found on 9/12.

Then by making that observation..a bunch of people have found it necessary to defend themselves....I guess they are paraniod or something.

Then what point are people trying to prove by bringing guns to rallies?

I've been trying to figure that out.

I'm all for gun rights but bringing it to a rally seems like you are just asking for trouble.

Yikes. You are supporting terrorism? [...]

No, you are. I'm supporting self-defense against terrorism, and only under certain circumstances.

[...] 65% favor, not only insurance reform but a public option, according to this latest poll out. Only 26% apposed it,hardly enough to worry about. [...]

Yes, but that minority includes lots of John Galt types like me. The Libman brand antimatter bombs mop a major metropolitan area squeaky clean. Not that we'd use them or anything - unlike the governments, we do have moral standards. And plus we have something much better in mind. ;)

Please explain why someone is "asking for trouble" by openly and LEGALLY carrying a firearm at a public event?

Dude, cut out the personal attacks. It's obnoxious.

Then quit being a political hack and acting like one side is acting any better than the other. Or that either side has in the last 20 years.

So why would someone carrying a legal weapon strike fear in your heart? Why would it even matter, it is legal. :doh

None of the above.

The American public is a bunch of ******s right and left. Your argument is a good example.

Do you mean like they did at the G-20 yesterday?... breaking windows, fighting with police and National Guard, over 60 arrested....

Oh wait.... that was the violent Right-wing terrorist Mob wasn't it?

Let's compare yesterdays protests with the Tea Parties.... how many were arrested at them or the town halls?

Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters nationwide now oppose the health care reform proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. That’s the highest level of opposition yet measured and includes 44% who are Strongly Opposed.

Health Care Reform - Rasmussen Reports

Key survey findings included that 84 percent of those who are currently insured are satisfied with their health care. For those without insurance, only 46 percent had some level of satisfaction with their health care. Almost 80 percent agreed that rising healthcare costs are hurting American businesses. An expanded role for government in health care is opposed by 48 percent of Americans, while 44 percent support it. Forty-six percent of respondents agreed that a public plan is needed to "keep insurance companies honest."

Zogby International

PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans are skeptical that President Obama's healthcare plan will be able to accomplish all he intends -- to expand coverage to nearly all Americans without raising taxes on middle-class Americans or affecting the quality of care. Thirty-eight percent believe his plan will achieve all of these goals, while 60% do not think it will.
