Well I am a white male, and I can say i've had it pretty easy my whole life.

I've never been racially profiled or discriminated against.

I have twice lived in parts of the country that were predominantly none white and have been heavily discriminated against. I have even been refused a ride on a public city bus. Plus many worse things.

From my perspective 95% of the time black folks are taken just as seriously as a white guy.

Well, if true, that's still not good enough, is it?
We're getting there. We've made great progress, it's undeniable.
But we're not all the way there yet.

Why not? Are you racist or something?

I'd be Michael Jordan!

Unfortuately, the average black man is a lot further away from having the sort of wealth and priviledge enjoyed by Michael Jordan than the average white man.

You also realize that whites can be discriminated against also right?

Its all about being an indivdual.Dont worry black people liberal minded people are here to help you and patronise you at the same time.

If someone gets somewhere through affirmative action thats a curse put on them people will always think its only because.

And the most likely paths for black men to achieve success and social prominence are still, basically, as athletes and entertainers.
Society rewards blacks for entertaining the white folks.
Pro-sports figures, musicians, comedians, and actors are disproportionately black.
But stating that this means equality has been achieved is silly.
Imagine if a white man's best shot at achieving success lay in being, say... a rock star? Or a professional artist or novelist.
These are extreme long-shots.
Blacks who lack the gift or the inclination to be performers need to have a full range of other avenues to success available to them, just as white folks do.

I do not deny this at all. But now blacks can rise up and achieve the same goals. We no longer hold them back in general. Granted there will be a few cases where individuals were held back but as a whole they are equal. Its all about the individual and what they chose to do with themselves.

It is no different then a typical white family. We all know them. A white family with many children, one child always seems to fail at life while there siblings do well. I see the same thing with black families. Those that have ambition and make the right choices get somewhere in life, those that make poor choices or lack motovation often times do not.

Without AA everyone has the same priviledge.

As far as wealth goes that is earned through hard work. Not earned because of color. Well...unless it's inherited. But thats a whole nother ball of wax.

Without AA everyone has the same priviledge.

If I believed that, I'd be all for the abolition of AA.
But I don't think we're there yet.

There's nothing stopping anyone from succeeding as an engineer, a doctor, a scientist, salesman, or a anything else except his own lack of will to succeed.

But failure is always surrounded by lame excuses.

The white guy that fails, all he can say is "I'm stupid".

The minority that fails, he can say, "I isn't stupid, I's discriminated against."

And that stops him from fixing the real problem.

Sorry but I'm going to have to disagree with 99% of this.

The part that I don't disagree with too much is the sports entertainment part. But that is because blacks are more athletic than whites are. This is actually proven fact. Blacks do have higher bone density and more muscle mass than whites do and are more often taller than whites. If you coached a football team or basketball team who would you rather pick? The biggest strongest people right? Picking blacks over whites in this case really isn't racist because of the obvious differences in size and mass.

But as far as musicians go I could point to ALOT of white musicians. At least an equal amount of black musicians. Same goes for comedians, actors, novelists, and yes even rockstars.

I bet that I could even point to quite alot of mundane jobs that blacks do also.

So your for patronising black men because they need special help?

Give a suggestion for an option you want put into a poll. And if a mod deems it appropriate and useful lets add it in. Was stoned and forgot the "other". Sowwy. Selected for 4 options and really wanted those ones.

Institutionalized racism against blacks is just a myth. In fact, the most prominent instances of institutionalized racism are against whites. I wonder why I couldn't get one of these, for instance:

Grants for Minorities

The victimhood of black Americans must be exposed for the absurdly overblown melodrama that it really is. I mean what specific instances of institutionalized racism against blacks can you actually cite?

We voted out affirmative action here in NE. It lifted the preferential treatment of people of color or gender in public contracting, public employment, and public education

I voted to ban it and I would do it again.

No pun intended, but I don't think you can make black and white statements about this issue. In some regions of the U.S., there is still a disadvantage for minorities and preferential treatment for whites. In other areas, it used to be an issue but isn't any longer. It should be up to each region to decide what is appropriate for its ethnic makeup. Some areas still definitely have ethnic tensions.

To say that race is a non-issue in America right now is too big of a generalization. The same goes for sexism, homophobia, and religious discrimination. We should never declare these battles "won" lest we let our guard down and the tensions grow even bigger.

Hey!! I'm just a white grumpy guy too! :3oops:

I didn't really see an option to vote for that seemed to match what i think, so i didn't vote.

I think we haven't yet "done enough," and i think it'll be impossible to ever "do enough". Recent history is a powerful thing, and it's not possible to erase it with any actions at all. Certainly the gov't can do it. A lot of time needs to pass, and a lot of social changes need to happen for there to be the sense of equity that most folks (me included) seem to want.

Though i support Obama in a milquetoast sort of way, he DID get a lot more attention and support BECAUSE of his race. I doubt that he would have been elected without this special treatment that was a result of his "race". So yes, there's still way too much racism in the US.

America did a number on their slaves, and that's going to have its effects. (Of course, it's nothing like America did to the native indians, but nobody seems to care much about them).

Affirmative action IS racism, so that's not the answer or even an answer. The answer, as it almost always is, is education. (IMO)

Obama he i s not a black man,he is a man.

I look forward to the day when we can get rid of AA.

We've came a long way in 50 years, but in many parts of the country we're not quite there yet.

I'll admit it was yet another reason I voted for Obama.
From now on, a poor black kid in Oakland or Detroit now know that they can truly grow up to be anything they want.

I'd have liked a choice that said, "yes, America is nearly equal but no socierty will ever be completely equal."

God bless the idea of having many different states with varying laws so that you may chose how to be reprimanded and for what.
