Should the Government Pay for Cell Phones?

Should the Government Pay for Cell Phones?

The only example that I can think of, in which government might be justified in providing cell phones is in the case of victims of domestic violence, with a substantial risk of ongoing harm, who might need access to a phone for emergency services. And the phone should call the police and no one else.

The local courts handle that.

They confiscate people's cell phones who didn't listen to the Bailiff when he warned that all cell phone shall be turned off during court or they will be taken.

Then they give them to local victims of domestic violence, the serious cases where the woman are seeking, and can really use, the help.

Yeah, I was under the impression that those mostly come from "donations."

^.^

It is, in part.

The Bailiff informs them that this is what will happen to their phone.

They fail to take his warning, thus they have 'donated' their phone.

Wouldn't that be considered unconstitutional? I mean to surrender your property for failure to turn it off in court? I can see getting thrown out of the courtroom, but permanent confiscation???

Just what this country needs.....government-sponsored sexting.

"Thousands of low-income Coloradans reliant on public assistance could get a free cellphone under a plan before the state Public Utilities Commission."

This is along the lines of the federal government program called Lifeline. Just about anyone on government assistance gets a free phone, and/or a reduction in their phone bill.

Is this something the government should be subsidizing? Is this something our tax dollars should go to?

Will people take advantage of this like some do every other government program?

Poor in Colorado may get free phones - The Denver Post

$50 phone + $20 airtime per month...when they could just send a government official to Wall-Mart and buy Net10 phones with 300 pre-loaded minutes for $30 altogether.

If they want to give the poor cell phones, fine, it'll help them get a job, but Trackphone is by far not the cheapest rout.

Look anyone can go out and buy a minute phone for 20$ and pay 10$ for 60 minutes, why should the government give the people anything.

From reading the news article, it sounds like the trac-phone company gives the phone away free and the 83 mins come out of a fund that already helps low income people with land-lines.

No extra freebies for the poor. No need to get your panties in a bunch.

No they government should not pay for cell phones.

Also, the government should have no access to cell phone records. Well maybe with the proper, specific warrant.

It's Trackphone...there are no records.

Hmmmm. . . this poll is not producing the sort of results that the Left would want to see. Will it be thrown out in New haven Connecticut?

If the government taxed the drug sales that were going down over the cellphones this could all work itself out money wise. Maybe we'd even be ahead in the deal.

If you have a right to something, then you obvioulsy have the right to have it without paying for it.
I wish someone would buy me a gun.

With some ammo.

I could get behind socialism if we were talking about a Nationalized Gun Ownership Program.....and/or Nationalized Firearm Liability Insurance Program.

The treatment of the poor in our nation is not something to be proud of.
And, the fact that we have poor people is not good.
Why is this ?
I'd guess that in Colorado we have wealthy law-makers ,if anything like PA, they have a good chance of retiring as millionaires..
So, for the rich legislators to give out items to the poor they consider to be a necessity and inexpensive....both of which are debatable....is no big deal...
One question ...have you ever been poor ?

And to the rich conservatives ....give them their guns, booze, cigarettes and gambling...
But how on earth did they ever become rich ??

I live in the so called "Ghetto" people are poor for a reason! They make themselves poor by getting pregnant, smoking dope, selling dope. I mean come on there are always going to be the poor and the rich nothing can change that. The only way to help people is to cut them off and let them make there way in life on there own. * survival of the fittest.

Yea I will have a good time defending my house from a thief with this!
I heard they are coming out with a new gun that shoots the darts even faster!
:rofl

God that would be so demasculating...if I were a home invader and you confronted me with a nerf gun...wtf I'm not even worth paintball?

That is to much of a health hazard Obama told me himself.

There will always be poor people to some extent. Obviously welfare hasn't helped stop that because there are still tons of poor people in the United States. America was founded on principles of equal opportunity, not equal outcomes. How are poor people being treated badly? We have many charities on national, state, and local levels. I don't go kick homeless people around.

What about rich liberals? According to this site:
FactCheck.org: What percentage of the U.S. population makes more than $250,000 per year?
Only 2% of people in the United States make over 250,000 a year. More than 2% of the population is rich. Conservatives are not all rich at all. I am a conservative who is right in the middle of the middle class. I hate when conservatives are labelled "rich".

I said 'Unsure' because having a phone can help in getting a job (how will they get a callback for an interview?), plus for safety and being able to call 911.

For only those reasons would I support it, so if it's truly just 60 mins a month, I'm good with that.
