Pentagon health experts are urging Defense Secretary Robert Gates to ban the use of tobacco by troops and end its sale on military property, a change that could dramatically alter a culture intertwined with smoking.

Ban on tobacco urged in military - USATODAY.com

Do you think banning tobacco products in the military is going to far?

Hmmm....let's see....military recruiters are looking for men who are willing to risk getting shot, blown up, captured, tortured, killed, crippled, and emasculated, for the good of the country, yet they also want to say that they'll only enlist men who are so conscious about their health and physical fitness that they don't use tobacco in any form.

That's about what their saying, isn't it?

The left wants the US military, one of the world's finest organizations of trained fighting men, to act like a bunch of girl scouts.

Are they ****ing on crack?

First Alchohol , Porn and now Cigs wow. is this the military or a Missionary?

The Left ABSOLUTELY does not want the US military in the missionary position. The Left are BOHICA guys.

Just to play devil's advocate here (I don't really have an opinion on tobacco in the military), but I would think that use of tobacco would make people less able to handle the physical strains of their job.

Tobacco use doesn't have the same effect on everyone.

Ive seen alot of folks in the Army running their 2 miles in 10 minutes for the PT test and then lighting up a cigarette right afterwards.

Its effects are relative to the individual.

Cutting down on tobacco usage during peacetime makes sense to lower the health problems. However, for soldiers who have to fight, we should be glad they are using tobacco to calm the nerves rather than something even worse. The immediacy of death and fear is far greater than lung problems or cancer.

They are adults and can make the choice for themselves.

****ing government.

This is going to far. As others have stated we ask these men to risk their lives, personal safety and other things the least we can do is allow them to smoke if they wish.

It annoys me when some pc moron takes certain things away from troops and these ****ers have the nerve to bash Christians for trying to impose morality.. I remember when they banned troops from having sex with the Drinky Girls(prostitutes from Russia,Philippines and Korea) in Korea, that was one of the few things that made South Korea an enjoyable place and those pc morons took it away.

If our brave men and women are willing to fight and die for our country they should be able to drink, smoke, etc. whatever the **** they want to. This is completely ridiculous.

Oh man, my grandpa (WWII vet) and my Great grandpa (WWI vet) would be rolling in their graves right now.

I'm a liberal by all accounts, and all for government intervention for those who need it, but 18 is 18. If you can die for your country or be tried, convicted, and sentenced to death for a serious crime at 18, then you sure as hell should have the right to smoke and drink in this country.

The alcohol ban for the military is only in countries where alcohol is illegal. Soldiers stationed in the states or in europe for instance are still able to drink.

1. They CANNOT ban porn. It's protected under the 1st amendment.

2. Alcohol is only banned in certain (mostly middle eastern) countries.

3. Banning tobacco abuse of authority. Tobacco is legal to own for persons over 18.

4. These people need to lay off the crack.

They can ban certain types of porn depending on the country your duty station is located. For example in Korea the only porn were allowed to have was playboy magazines, perfect 10 magazines and girls gone wild dvds. If you actually wanted real porn you would have to go off post/camp to the back rooms of one of the shops to buy real porn.

People may be surprised to read this, but I don't know if I think this is a good idea. It does seem a bit harsh, although it does seem logical. I dunno.

The entire military should say that no one will take their cigs unless they can pry it out of their cold dead hands.

 I tell you there is nothing better than lighting up a Cohiba Siglo IV after sending a pack of hajis to thier 72 virgins and Allah....

Just sayin....

I have a feeling this is part of an evil plot...ban everything in the military so nobody will volunteer, then bring back the draft....hmmm...I smell conspiracy...

This is another way for the government to control how we live our lives.
The tobacco act is forcing Philip Morris to make an AD to show people how smoking is bad for you! How can you instruct a company to tell people not to buy there product?? This would force them over time to lose profits and maybe bankrupt themselves. Genocide our own company's.

Oh yeah... I suppose that is true.

Our men and women fight for our freedom to smoke or not.
