Track down the owner. That's what I would want. I never carry lots of cash, but it's a major hassle replacing all the other crap. Hell, you can keep my $14 if you need it that bad.

It's a flush with cash kinda week if I actually have $14 in my wallet.

I live via the debit card. I keep enough cash for any items I buy for $3-$5. So my wallet is always light on cash.

If needed I'll probably take the cash, then try to contact the owner to give him the rest.

I would burn it, to prevent it from falling to the wrong hands.

What would you do?

The wallet contained fifty dollars in cash, a credit card, a drivers license, and a picture of a happy family.

Take the cash and drop off the rest in the police station.

I recently had this issue, me and my sister found a bag on the street. Had a few 50 pound notes and alot of credit cards and personal details. Sis wanted to take it all and i just wanted the cash, so we broke even. We took the cash and made sure the rest found its way back to the owner.

What do you mean, your sister wanted it all?
What else did she want beside the cash that was in the wallet?

Oh i should have mentioned.
The bag was so nice and phone.

But i took pity, i have no idea why looking back, I think it was to justify and square it off with my head morally. Just take the money and leave everything else

Take the cash and mail the wallet back to the owner. Finder's fee.

At first your response was somewhat surprising to me, but then I saw your avatar.

I have returned wallets before if there was an easily identifiable address or phone number in it, I've done the same for cell phones. If I can't identify an address or phone number, I would turn it over to the authorities who have more resources (although granted, probably no incentive) to track down the owner.

In no circumstances would I keep it.

Damn right, and when they get it, they should be grateful you didn't take their identity.

I've found a cell phone or two. I leave a voicemail on the "Mom" contact's phone when I do. That's really the easiest/surest way of getting word back to the owner

And getting a date with a MILF every now and then!;)

I don't think it's that bad, especially when you contrast it with the amount of money our government regularly steals from us.

You got that right! I got my own mistresses to support! Not to mention the costs of blow and hookers is inflating!!!!

I know, I just thought it was funny when in relation to your avatar. As for the government stealing from us, I agree that they steal a lot from us..but I still couldn't justify stealing money from someone like that. Who knows how poor they are and if that money causes a real setback for them. I do it because I would like to think that someone would do the same for me if I lost my wallet. It's nice to know you can count on the humanity of people.

I don't try to justify it. I know it's wrong, but that's just the way the world works sometimes. At least I'd let him keep his identity...:)

I've been on the finding and losing side a few times. I know what it's like losing a wallet and it's no fun. Regardless, I simply could not live with myself if I took something that did not belong to me. It's that simple. So I would return the wallet to the owner with every dollar intact.

I have a few lost wallet stories, so I'll bore you with one right now. Back in my university days, my wallet was stolen from my purse in a bar. I was irked, but what could I do? So I had to take the painful steps (*ahem* pre-internet days!) to get all of my cards and ID back.

Queue 12 years later, I get a package in the mail. It's the wallet. No money, but the ID is all there (not that I needed it). I had lived at various addresses in all those 12 years, but yet, it found it's way back to me. I have no idea who sent it, but they must have had an interesting time tracking me down. I thought it was very cool, even though I had no more use for it.

If I saw it lying on the ground in a gay neighborhood, I would kick it all the way to the city limits before bending over to pick it up.

Mail everything to the address on the license.
