Which is why I said "maybe" to reading the place... although there are some pretty sick stuff in the Sexuality forum and the Basement. What I said though is that I wouldn't want them posting here because however interesting this place is to them, they're too young to apply that interest into the discussion.

I agree with the Basement and the sex and sexuality forum.

Of course. When I was 12, I was actively praying for the failure of the Democratic presidential nominee on the grounds that he was the Antichrist. :)

Kerry, the antichrist?

Kind of a boring antichrist, don't you think?

After reading all the postings in that "Are Women Property" thread, I'm starting to have second thoughts as to whether this place is suitable for my 27 year old.

My youngest is 13, but she has almost no interest in politics right now. If she showed interest, I'd let her read some parts of the forum, but would definitely keep her out of others, especially the basement. She could post with my supervision as well if she wanted to.

The idea that this is anywhere near the worst site that a 13 year-old looks at is hilarious.

News for those of you with 13 year olds and computers: Your children are going behind your back and looking at crazy porn all the goddamn time.

I honestly never did that until I was 16. Porn scared me up until then.

Yeah they are looking at stuff that would shock the crap out of most adults even us. They could take us places online that would make our hair turn gray . Mine is gray. It would make my hair fall out.

That's always a possibility, but lets put it this way-if/when mine do, they WILL be found out. We have tracking software and filters to monitor such things. Not to mention every computer in the place is passworded, some in foreign languages. Not only that, the only computers they are allowed to use are in plain view in common areas with me or my ex supervising. They do not have internet access in their rooms.

Not necessarily.

There's that little function called History, and if they don't know how to erase it or have been warned not to on pain of waterboarding, you can see everywhere they've been.

Knowing that I check on his internet use, but not how, has kept young Goshin-Jr away from the kinky stuff so far.

Either that or he's outflanked and outfoxed dear old Dad!;)

(It happens....this I know from both sides of the equation!)

My parents thought the exact same thing. The problem is that kids are infinitely more technologically savvy than their parents.

At 13, it was easy to wake up at 2am, sneak down to the living room, disable the computer passwords, use proxies to get around filters, and check out all the 40k jpgs of "cindy crawford nude porn boobs" that I could Yahoo!

The only hard part was making sure the modem dial up noise didn't wake the dog, but thankfully, that's no longer an issue.

Then there's non-home computers, friends iphones, etc. Hoo boy.

Not necessarily.

psshhhhh that was the first thing I learned.

With google chrome and its pornbrowsing mode, you don't even need to do that anymore.

Yeah, there's also that. The thing I worry about the most is what their friends might be doing in their computers when mine are visiting. I generally have a rule against being online at friends houses, plus I always make sure that parents are home before allowing mine to visit.

I wouldn't want him realizing how much smarter he is than I. We can't have that now can we? He can find his own forum.

You're right.....we need to ban the kids!:lol::lol::lol:

Yeah, there's always the risk of non-home computers. We do the best we can and hope like hell it's enough :doh

As to the sneaking online during the night, God I hope not. In our case it's less likely because I have insomnia often, but there's obviously never any guarantee there.

I think I was 10yrs old when I read in the Guardian that D H Lawrence's book Lady Chatterley's had been banned and the publishers prosecuted under the obscenity laws.(not guilty)

I asked my Dad his stance, he gave me the book and said form your own conclusions.

I did, censorship is wrong, parents if they are parents should be able to assist their child to be educated enough to make their own dicision.

The "basement" I would pobably object on the ground that my daughter at 13yrs would be exposed to the fact that some adults still love to live in the junior school playground.

I am one:)

at the other end of the spectrum, some here may remember my then 92yrs old Mums contributions to PF:)

I visited forums much like this one to debate politics starting from when I was 12. I think being exposed to both sides of the political spectrum is the best way for kids to learn about politics. In real life, you mostly end up learning about politics from only one viewpoint, which tends to be quite biased.

A good example of your point is a young man who posted in the "truth and dangers of Homosexuality" he would definitely have benefited from a place like this 6 or 7 yrs ago

There's nothing that happens on here that I would worry about my (hypothetical) 13 year old reading about, not even the Basement or Sex and Sexuality. More than a few things talked about there I wouldn't want him or her doing, but nothing I wouldn't want him or her reading about. I was reading Heinlein and Lovecraft by that age, and learning how to make hallucinogens and IEDs from underground BBSes.

I wouldn't want my kid on TOTSE or Roguesci without supervision, but that's because those forums are long on DIY and short on CYA, and I don't want my kid losing a hand or going to prison. It's my responsibility to teach my kids that stuff anyway.

Don't know many 13 year olds interested in politics.....

Yeah, people say they're not interested in "politics", but when you bring up a topic they usually have an opinion.

I caught my wife on that all the time. I tried to get her to join the forum but "politics" in the eyes of many means 'Capitol soap-opera'.

"I don't like politics" she says..."oh, what do you think about abortion..."...I let her go on for a few minutes about it and "see? you do care". She says she cares about many different social issues and laws but not at all for "politics".

You're right, though you can hardly blame her for having the impression she does. Our politicians don't seem too interested in ridding themselves of that particular stereotype

Honestly I was the same way myself till recently. Maybe one day you'll be successful in getting her to give it a try. Good luck!

When I was 13(3 years ago) I just found out how to delete certain parts of my history... not that my parents checked, but whenever they used the same computer I just made sure to clean it all up:)lol:).... that's the truth
