All this talk of spousal ownership has gotten me thinking about a western "tradition" that is slightly related, and could be used to make an argument of ownership.

Engagement rings.

Why the **** does a man have to get on his knees and beg and BRIBE his prospective bride into becoming his wife?

Women don't have to humiliate themselves and prostrate themselves before their prospective grooms. Women need not bribe the man in order for the agreement to be reached.

Doesn't this bribe instill the image that a women must be "bought" or "bartered" for?

Why the hell doesn't the woman need to get on her knees and hold up a big screen TV and then beg for the MAN'S hand in marriage?!?!?!?

(I say big screen TV because a ring ain't gonna do it for a man. He'll need something more useful and practical than the finger shackle.)

Does that really happen? Men beg and use a ring for bribery?

I mean aside from your own experience, Tucker :2razz:

My friend I mentioned in the other thread, is actually good at one thing and thats getting something he wants, where other men have failed to capitalize. For instance, he made a deal with his then girlfriend of 8 years, that he could buy a new set of golf clubs when he ask her to marry him, and when she pestered him for a baby, he got a big screen TV and a PS3 out of the deal.

How else do you get a woman to agree to marry you?

Gluck you should be put in irons for this.:2wave: Chain him up.

This isn't the first time I made this particular argument in my life, and I have the 51 inch TV to prove it. ;)

What do you call it when a man gets on his knees, offers an expensive gift and then asks for something?

Sounds like begging + bribery to me.

I'd like to know who came up with, and popularized this method.

I meant the whole "getting down on bended knee thing" I guess some men still do it but it seems that it's more the thing of romance novels than real life.

It happens on the reality tv shows all the time.;)

You are a true romantic, Crip. That's sweet.

Well, now my wife watches murder mystery shows and other shows where women have murdered their husbands in a rage. So, we'll see how that pans out I guess.

My grandmother watches those type of movies all the time and my grandfather says it is so she can figure out a way to kill him and get away with it.

Does she also collect rare and exotic poisons?

True story. After my wife and I got engaged, we went over to my parents house to tell them and my mother obviously asked "how'd you do it?" nad we told her. Then she starts telling the story about how my father proposed on Valentine's day and he got down on his knee when he interrupts her and says "I ****ing slipped. I had just bought you a ring for Valentine's day and it was snowy. You took it the wrong way and then got all excited about it so I didn't have the heart to tell you it wasn't an engagement ring."

She says "Is that why it was so ugly?"

He said, "Nah, that's because I didn't feel like wasting money on a nice ring for some broad I was just bangin'."

So now you all know why I'm so friggin' weird.

Own us well, ladies, own us well.

Do you think the man you are married with or who you date/live with is your property?

My answer is, do not sink to the level of other people on this forum!! No one is the property of anyone else, and if they are it is WRONG. Many people are trying to say, "but what if they are happy being property??" And all I can think of is yes, some people may be happy, but happy in the way that uncle tom was!!! So don't lower yourself to the level of others at this forum!! This poll is unnecessary!!

The absurd polls are one of the most positive aspects of a forum.

I haven't found a sugarmama yet. Every man has his price. :2razz:

In all seriousness though, I'd like to see what the gay community's insight on this is. Have they heard of relationships with ownership?
