So you would support an official apology for segregation, right?

So long as it is directly to those who were segregated from those who segregated them (the states that had segregation policies), I have no problem with it. It should be to the whites, black etc.

I'd also support a letter of apology sent to any Japanese people who are still alive that were placed in internment camps in WWII.

The apology isn't necessarily directed to the descendants of slaves or to African-Americans in particular. It is directed to all American citizens, and to the world. It is the government apologizing for its own human rights abuses, as it should.

One can apologize for an historical act without implying that people are still victimized by it today. For example, the Catholic Church issued a mea culpa around 1990 for its persecution of Galileo and his scientific theories...that doesn't mean that anyone thought people were still suffering from the Inquisition or that the Catholic Church still believed the sun revolved around the earth until 1990.

The apology to Galileo was bull**** if that's what it apologized for. Galileo was sanctioned not for his scientific views, but because he interpreted scripture. If they appologized for something they didn't actually do, it's an empty apology.

The Catholic Church can lay claim to deriving the heliocentric system since it was one of their priests who derived the theory. (Copernicus)

Galileo didn't do **** but argue in favor of that system and try to make scripture fit with it. Galieo gets far too much credit on the matter while Kepler and Copernicus get ****ed in the eyes of "common knowledge" history because Galileo gets the credit.

The only thing that the Catholic church's apology did was make it so more people are clueless about the history of heliocentrism and will continue to credit Galileo for that which he did not do and demonize the Catholic church for that which it did not do. Galileo was aware that he was violating the law when he interpreted scripture. When he placed the words of the Pope in the mouth of his fool character, Simplico. He knew there would be repercussions for doing this. He deserved no apology.

In other words, the Catholic Church's bull**** apology made the world a dumber place because it has made it so that fewer people know facts and more people believe nonsense.

There was nothing gained by the Catholic Church's apology, and the world lost intelligence over it.

So your example apology was a detriment to the world and offered no benefit.

That's kind of like how I see apologizing to dead people over slavery would be.

Obama should half appologize to half of himself then half-appologize to the nation.

Obama should half appologize to half of himself then half-appologize to the nation.
The black side of The Obama was never a vicitm of slavery in the US.
As such, no one needs to apologize to him, and he has no claim to the suffering of those that were.

Everyone who should is dead. No real point in having people who weren't involved in it to say sorry. Any slave traders nowadays should apologize, before they are executed.

Nice to know your statement doesn't match your vote in the poll.

Yes. It is extremely disgusting. A lot of what goes on in Africa these days is appalling.

Sick but not very shocking. Probably done with Government knowledge

Africans were very good snitches when white people came and sold their own people in the ships in some cases.

And i also assume the OP's use of slavery includes white slavery which occured? Who will apologise for that?! :O

That is utter crap. Welfare, drugs and the thug life style destroyed the black family. It was still strong during slavery.

No..
The last thing the slave owners wanted was any family life..

Which liberals have helped us obtain this softness on crime, especially in my city.

When I finally move to the cost in the next year im going to leave by placing a sign next to the county entrance sign that says, "Welcome Criminals"

Read up on it? I know well what destroyed the family life of my own people. And it was not slavery. Read up on it? I lived it.

Then explain why the black community had a sense of value and togetherness up until the 1960's. Please explain how until the drug wars the majority of young black men were not in jail.

Softness on crime leads to this thug life..

You have got to be kidding, you are that naive?

By 2000, roughly one in 10 black men will be in prison - a statistic with major social implications because prisoners don't have jobs, pay taxes or care for their children at home. And because many states bar felons from voting, at least one in seven black men will have lost the right to vote.

"These numbers are staggering," said Laurie Levensen, a former federal prosecutor and associate dean of Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. "We're incarcerating an entire generation of people."
- Number of Blacks in Prison Nears 1 Million

WASHINGTON -- Black Americans comprise a greater share of prison inmates than they do in the overall population of at least 29 states, new census data show. - US NC: Census Data on Blacks in Prison

Soft on crime my black as*.

WTF are you talking about

Im talking about THIS POLL RIGHT HERE, THE ONE YOU VOTED IN ON THIS THREAD.

Not a presidential election.

I can totally tell you are a partisan hack now, AND a racist. Otherwise this wouldn't have turned into the topic of presidential elections and mention of race, which has absolutely nothing to do with my post.

FAIL.

Oh, okay. Yeah, I voted for all the ones, except no one, and the African people or something right? How do you know I mean this government? These people? Note on page 8 I posted all the people who should apologize are dead. Convientely forgot about that?

Re: Who should apologize for slavery?

The African chieftains sold the very worst of their worst into slavery. The United States is now the recipient of their progeny. In the days of American slavery...we housed, clothed and fed them, but at least we got a little work out of them.

If that were the case, slavery wouldn't be half as bad. But the slave drivers beat them to near death, and they didn't stop there with some.

They sold prisoners of war, criminals and those who would fetch a good price. Had little or nothing to do with worst of the worst. Sounds like a theory from "Race Matters" or "Storm Front."

The United States is now the recipient of their progeny. In the days of American slavery...we housed, clothed and fed them, but at least we got a little work out of them.

Yep racist to the core.
