Who should apologize for slavery?

The following options will be-

The US government should apologize for slavery.

The people should apologize for slavery.

Since elected officials represent us they should apologize in our name.

The people in Africa whose ancestors captured and sold people into slavery.

The governments of various countries in Africa were the slave trade once occurred.

Government officials in Africa apologizing in the name of their constituents.

No one should apologize for slavery.

I say no one should apologize for slavery. After all the offenders are no longer around nor are their victims. Anyone today apologizing for slavery is the equivalent of me apologizing to some guy in Vermont because the person who owned his house a hundred years earlier window was broken by some hoodlum.

I say nobody should apologize for it either... it should be recognized and remembered as a horrible thing though.

If the US government hasn't appologized yet, then they should, but I thought that the US had appologized already though. A government and a country takes into account everything it has done in the past, (national debt is an example) so they would need to appologize.

Normal citizens shouldn't though, because that was in the past, and I don't like the idea of a collective appology :p

If someone contributed to segregation then they should appologize though, but thats still about an individual appology.

I approve of and support the above.

The government represents you. so what ever they do they do in your name,so the government apologizing is the same thing as you apologizing. If normal citizens shouldn't apologize because that was in the past then why should the government apologize? It takes two to tango and when slavery was legal a lot of normal people contributed to slavery by either owning or selling slaves or working as overseers.

Segregation is a separate issue.

I think slave owners and politicians who enabled slave owners should apologize for slavery.

Good luck finding one living today.

The government ought to apologize for slavery. After all, it's the same government that facilitated slavery, it never fell to a revolution. And the economic effects of slavery are still obvious today. The average black family has around 1/6th the wealth of the average white family.

No one should. How can someone unnamed apologize for this. Reparations should be paid to the families of slaves as was worked out after the War for Southern Independence.

God................

The United States Government should apologize, here is my logic. The US government functions as an institution. It isn't just a collection of people, it is a standing institution of power. The government, as an institution should apologize, because the institution did something wrong.

On the other hand, reparations should not be given out, since no former slaves are living today. Reparations should only go to people directly affected.

Does he/she/it ever take responsibility for anything?
nah, he/she/it knows which side the bread is buttered, and the religious love for he/she/or it to dip his eggy soldiers into their soft boiled heads:)

I voted. However, I do remember slavery when people talk about how we should honor our traditions, and I give them a John Stewart-esqe look.

No one should apologize for the slavery of the black Africans imported into America for several reasons.

One, all the people involved are dead. That's a big reason right there.

Two, all the descendants of Africans imported into the British colonies in North America that later became the United States are damn lucky to be here, and not back in Africa.

Three, people that have lives should be too busy living them to worry about this nonsense, and people who don't have lives that waste time worrying about an apology from someone who had nothing to do with the slavery issue aren't important and should be ignored.

Those responsible for slavery should apologize for slavery.

The government of the Confederate States of America should apologize, since slavery was a state-sanctioned policy.

Yeah, I can maybe give it a lighter look in a religion thread discussing legitimate things. However full out insults of anyone religious has no place in this thread that's not dealing with religion and anyone else further pushing it may find themselves becoming familiar with the number 18.

But no one who is alive today has actually been a slave owner. The government on the otherhand is immortal, so the blood is still on their hands.

I suppose I am just wondering how the people would apologize for slavery. Does everyone who had ancestors that contributed to slavery just sign some petition or something?

The government is not immortal and it is made up of people whom our citizens put into office or take out of office by voting for them or their opponents. Those in the government regardless if they were voted into office or appointed are the employees of the people(amazing how libs seem to forget this fact). They are representatives of the people and what ever they do they do in our name and our behalf.(amazing how libs seem to forget these details).

Even if we lived in a monarchy the Queen or King would not be responsible for what one their inbred ancestors di and therefore would have nothing to apologize for. Even if we lived in a dictatorship our government wouldn't be responsible for the actions of those before them.

I suppose I am just wondering how the people would apologize for slavery.

Since the government represents the people then all the government would need to do is sign some piece of paper saying they apologize for slavery.

Does everyone who had ancestors that contributed to slavery just sign some petition or something?

If thats the way to make it official then I guess thats what would have to be done. Maybe use tax breaks or something else as a bribe to get people to sign it.

Last time I checked the United States government fought a war to end the practice of slavery and over 100,000 Americans died in that conflict.

Why does any element of the government today have to apologize after that?

After all, it's the same government that facilitated slavery...

Uh, no, it's not. It's not the same government at all. The government of which you speak has long since vanished from the Earth.

As Wayne Campell once said, "Live in the now!"

The government ought to apologize for slavery. After all, it's the same government that facilitated slavery, it never fell to a revolution.

No it's not. Since we have a representative democracy, the government represents it's constituents. No constituent alive to today ever voted a slave owning or promoting politician into office.

And the economic effects of slavery are still obvious today. The average black family has around 1/6th the wealth of the average white family.

Sounds to me like the average black family needs to spend less time pointing to the wealth of others and more time creating some wealth for itself.
