Ya know, I'm about as individualistic as they come.America was founded as a collection of independent states (nations).
Even my individualistic and occasionally churlish and acerbic self knows that the 13 original states intended to work together at this whole nation building thing. Most of the states are still pretty keen on the concept.
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
How you get from "more perfect Union" to every state for itself is unfathomable to me.
