Do you wonder why Photoshop CS4 costs $1,000+ and Paint is free with Windows?

Do you wonder why Photoshop CS3 costs $1,000+ and Paint is free with Windows?

I always have a perfectly legit, legal, registered copy of the Creative Suite, and I never pay for it. :2razz:

Because Window's is not making it's profit off of some 70 kb program...

Adobe, sorta needs to make money off of Photoshop.

If I needed the whole suite at home or for business I might buy the whole CS suite - I would never buy Photoshop on its own.

As for cost - I remember the days it was given away free - if you bought a scanner or even some early digital cameras you got a giveaway version of Photoshop and suddenly you were on the cheap upgrade path.

At home I have Photoshop Elements - basically a slightly older version of Photoshop but otherwise for the whole creative suite I use all the digital foundations software apart from Gimp. I really REALLY hate "the Gimp" nothing would ever make me use it again. Don't like the interface, having to compile it or waste the time downloading it.

Artrage / Painter / Inkscape

However I do like Flash (which Adobe bought Macromedia to get hold of) and would buy Flash if I could ever get my head around Actionscript. I love the drawing tools in Flash in comparison to Illustrator / Freehand etc.

I can understand like $300 to $400, but a K is too much for that.

You have to remember that their are businesses out there that will pay those prices (or more for a site license) to use those products. These companies tend to target those customers with their ridiculous pricing.

Microsoft does the same thing; as does IBM and countless other software and hardware designers.

It's theivery to be certain; however, it happens and it will continue to happen until businesses refuse to pay absurd prices for software.

.. having to compile it or waste the time downloading it.

What do you use where you need to compile GIMP?

Give it time, eventually - as with other OSS, it will reach the level they expected, but [obviously] not yet. OpenOffice is finally becoming a viable alternative to Microsft Office, but it took time for it to get there.

I never got beyond the download and then reading the instructions on how to compile GIMP for yourself. I couldn't be bothered - it was easier, quicker and far more productive to pay for Photoshop elements than try piecing together my own freebie version.

Oh I know you can get a pre-compiled version now but that first experience put me off for ever.

Open Office is way cool, there's a huge debate at work to push MS Office out (we all have to cut costs right?) and go to Open Office instead. I have both on my work PC but I tend to use Open Office.

Funny, I've never had to compile GIMP - I was able to download and run the program.

Microsoft. Considering you can download it FOR FREE from their website.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/winntwks40/paint/1/nt4/en-us/paintnt.exe

Google search time .000552 Seconds.

And Microsoft Paint is still available for download freely.

It's already been explained why. Photoshop is expensive because it's the RR Phantom of the industry. You don't really get much better.

I dont give a damn bout any industry, I pay for windows, I get softwares wether its free or not ..

Then, Paint is already in your windows (you'd already paid for it), so they wont care if you download it because you'd already have their OS (windows)
