Do you believe the world would be a better place if someone were to invent a perfect, infallible lie detector tomorrow? Assume that the government would have an essentially unlimited supply of them, they'd be availalbe to the public at the cost of a decent computer, and they'd be impossible to tamper with. Is a world without lies, for the most part, worth the loss of privacy?

I voted no.

I know this might be vague, and a bit naive, but I think lying has actually brought progress to this world.

I cannot give specific examples, but this is just how I feel because if we had a world where people knew when others were lying, we would obviously have to be honest about everything.

In a sense, it brings us a "step to close" to perfection, which I think will result in either chaos or life being meaningless.

Its vague I know, but its hard to explain.

Lies are necessary to uphold the social fabric. As much as I want a more honest world, a more accountable world... human society could not survive perfect honesty.

At first this would throw the entire world into angry chaos and if we can make it past the first year without annihilating each other out of feelings of betrayal and revenge...

then yes this would make the world a better place

That same person had better invent a way to prevent women from asking "does this make me look fat?"

Try telling your boyfriend the whole truth. Bet you can't get past two days unless you just don't talk. ;)

I voted no. Besides politicians will just avoid directly answering any questions and use horse **** and paper coated terms.

Senator is it true you support gay marriage? I believe in traditional marriage and that traditions are important to this country,My dog's name is Skippy, I have a purple heart,I just visited Germany the other day and do they have great beer and I support civil unions/domestic partnerships.

There would be a period of unrest as people adapted to all the hard truths they were suddenly inundated with. Millions of relationships would vaporize since a lot of people underestimate the sheer quantity of little white lies that are told in order to keep the peace.

After this period of unrest, however, people would acclimate to the new reality of things and civilization would press on.

I see. So politicians are the world's only liars? What if we could ask those traveling to the US if they wished any harm to the country or if they'd ever been a member of Al-Qaeda?

That can already be done without any high tech gadgets. Just look at Israel for an example of how to do it. The US is too concerned about PC to do it right though.

What do you think about employers using voice or writing analysis as an indicator of lying and other character issues pre and/or post employment?

.

Humans are not socially developed enough to accept reality as it is, which is why we lie to others and more importantly ourselves. We don't do it out of malice most of the time, but mostly just to maintain a status quo and to feel safe.

As for a lie detector... I would not be in favour of it due to the probability of its abuse.

Of course not. However it is corrupt politicians that cause a lot of the problems in the world through deception. They tell people what they want to hear and use lies and double speak while doing another thing.

The truth is subjective.IF you ask a member of Hamas "are you a member of a terrorist group" they most likely are going to say no even though they are a member of a terrorist and the rest of the world views them as a terrorist group.

All government agents would be required to wear the new an improved infallible portable lie detector especially when they are speaking publicly.

No way we arent mature enough as a species to handle the truth.

Why bother? It's perfectly easy to tell if a government type is lying.....just check to see if his lips are moving.

(Yeah, tired and lame, but SOMEBODY was going to say it!)
