Since Ive been hearing the talk for quite awhile now I figure I should ask. Which would you prefer? Would you prefer your state to peacefully seceded from the Union would you rather have a bloody brawl (which could include foreign powers) with your ideological or racial or religious or etc enemy?

Uhh is there an option for "I don't want to secede"? Is that view so unusual that it gets consigned to "Other"?

Why in the world would anyone want a civil war? :doh

I voted other, because voting for the Constitution and for the Republic was not given as an option.

It depends.

If were seceding because the federal govt has started rounding people up for political views, and the black helicopters are more than a figment of the imagination, sure.

If we're claiming that we're being oppressed as an excuse to continue slavery, I'd prefer civil war. And execution for all those who attempted secession.

I have to wonder what the point here is, exactly.

Are you asking whether it would be preferable to have a civil war to preserve the union, rather than to peacefully allow states to succeed who desire to do so? In that case, I favor peaceful succession.

I hope that was irony, since the other option is just plain stupidity. That issue was settled in 1865. Unless you're referring to the de-facto in-all-but-name slavery that we're in peril of as the Fedgov grows toward consuming the majority of the GDP, putting our grandchildren in debt before they are born, and continuing its current progress toward a panopticon police-state.

Succession is not a dirty word. It is the last recourse of a people who can no longer live with each other in peace, and certainly preferable to civil war or armed revolt. Indeed, America has become so "diverse" (in ideology especially) that it might be the only way to avoid a more violent fracture. There is a highly-placed Russian professor and foreign policy advisor, predicting it will happen to us soon, btw. I don't agree with the particulars of his prediction, but I'm not sure he is altogether wrong.

I read that lunatic. He has no idea about the United States whatsoever. He thinks that California is dominated by the Chinese, and the middle of the country by native Americans. Oh and the north is apparently dominated by the political tyranny of the Canadians. It's remarkable what passes for political science. If he'd been to America one time, or taken the time to glance at the census report he would have realized that his report was a joke. I hope it actually was.

I would rather have peaceful secession, but to be honest; that one ain't ever going to happen. The federal government would not allow a State to secede, so even if you wanted peaceful secession, it's not going to happen.

That was why I said I disagreed with his particulars. He is obviously clueless about the character of regional cultures in the US. For example, when he figured South Carolina would go with the New England states and maybe join the EU, he clearly demonstrated his ignorance. As to the whole fragmentation of the US thing, I think it's not outside the realm of possibility....just not along the lines he is predicting.

Other-Joby illustrates the gist of my position.

I am a pretty hard supporter of the Union in the US Civil War, but I would be a supporter of secession if revolutionary.

Yea, we made it through two world wars, a great depression, Vietnam, and 9/11 okay, but a 10% increase in the national debt and 3% increase in unemployment is grounds for REVOLUTION!!!

I'm just astonished at how hysterical some people are getting over this. Seriously, wtf.

I'd rather eat a pile of barbecued nails, than see any part of my country break.
