Why does the 2nd Amendment protect the Right to Arms?

So that the people will always have access to firearms for....

Simply put....killing people.

More importantly, killing people in defense. Defense of ones self, or defense of the people if a government becomes tyrannical.

Hunting, sport shooting, etc, are all things guns are used for. But the 2nd amenmdent wasn't put in to assure people the right to go shoot deer.
 
Because in the lead up to the revolution, the British were going around and taking guns away from people. Same reason we have the 3rd.
 
All of the above really. But more importantly, because we the people have the right to defense no matter what the circumstances.

Civilian criminals, Federal Criminals, You name it, we have the RIGHT to defend ourselves from it, and Firearms are and always have been static to that defense.

The medium of death means very little to society. It is the intention behind murder.
If I really truly wanted to kill someone, and there were no guns in the world, then I would find another way to do it.
 
Other it is there to overthrow the state should it beome a tyranny.

This is a particularly simple comment. Obviously, having a gun is not a guarantee of safety from a person who is intent on murdering you, but there are other circumstances under which a gun becomes extremely useful in self-defense; home invasion being the primary scenario. There is a substantial amount of people who kill or stop home-invaders with firearms every year; seems quite legitimate to me.

From what I've read about the thinking at the time... carrying a gun was viewed as an important aspect of every day life:

Literally and seriously this is true.

These reasons are why the Second Amendment protects all of your rights. Whether freedom of religion, free speech, free press, free association, the right to protest the government, or our other rights, the Second Amendment allows you to protect those freedoms for yourselves and your loved ones.

The main reason for the second amendment was stated in the Declaration of Independence.

When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. And it's impossible to "throw off such a government" without arms.
 
The Second Amendment was not put into the Constitution by the Founders merely to allow us to intimidate burglars, or hunt rabbits to our hearts' content. This is not to say that hunting game for the family dinner, or defending against personal dangers, were not anticipated uses for firearms, particularly on the frontier. But these things are not the real purpose of the Amendment.

The Founders added the 2nd Amendment so that when, after a long train of abuses, a government evinces a methodical design upon our natural rights, we will have the means to protect and recover our rights. That is why the right to keep and bear arms was included in the Bill of Rights.

In fact, if we make the judgment that our rights are being systematically violated, we have not merely the right, but the duty, to resist and overthrow the power responsible. That duty requires that we always maintain the material capacity to resist tyranny, if necessary, something that it is very hard to do if the government has all the weapons. A strong case can be made, therefore, that it is a fundamental DUTY of the free citizen to keep and bear arms.

It is indeed a measure designed to prevent the government from enslaving the people.

The 2nd Amendment was created to ensure that all Americans, even criminals at the time it was written, were provided a defense against the government in the event that it went rogue.

In today's world, criminals do not have the right to bear arms. I can accept this provided that the individual is a felon.

Self-defense is actually NOT bull****. There are certain people who are armed 24/7 because they have to do so to stay alive. These people are allowed to carry weapons on commerical airliners, into stores, in public places, and pretty much anywhere they want.

Consider this: Why do armored car drivers carry guns? Why do they have heavy weaponry in their vehicles?

Self-defense is a valid concern for some. The rest of us have the police and our top-notch military to provide us with safety and security.

As to myself, I enjoy owning shotguns because I love to shoot skeet. I refuse to give up that right because the left has a bug up its ass because ONE lunatic killed somebody with a gun.

Remember: Guns don't kill people --- PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE.

It makes sense in a way. I don't agree with him but I can see how it makes sense.
 
The 2nd amendment = the right to self-protection, the right to protect his family and the community and protection against the government.
