Ummmm 400K for running a country? Seriously Why do you people keep skipping over the fact that when people say he should get paid more then 400K it's not because he has expenses. It's because he runs a ****ING WORLD POWER. It's not 400K because he has to drive to work. It's because he spends his day dealing with Russia, the Middle East, the Military, Healthcare, Welfare, National Security those damn Care Bears. Seriously. If I dealt with that much **** on a daily basis this is what the white house would look like every day :

Seriously though people. He's not getting 400K for his expenses. He's getting paid 400K for his responsibilities. And for somebody who's the leader of the most powerful country in the world. That is incredibly low. Bill Gates would laugh at anybody who offered him that kind of salary and I'm sure his job is not as complicated as running a nation of 300 million. Seriously. Throw me a friggin bone.

They get their names written on the pages of history. There's your bone.

It's a job of service, they are NOT supposed to be doing it for monetary gain.

Government work is supposed to be public service/service to your country, not a high paying career and yes 400,000 is a lot of money for a PUBLIC SERVANT.

It's better yearly salary than the majority of Americans and the POTUS has taxpayer funded perks(some crucial such as security, transportation, or business correspondence), sounds like a pretty cushy gig to me.

They are assuming the roles that they were never intended to have in the first place.

There not supposed to "run" the country but just manage the offices intended by the Constitution.

What a simpleton understanding of what the job of the POTUS is. Yes rivrrat the job of a Public Servant is one of Public Service. And the job of a police man is to police the streets. And that of a pig farmer is to care of pigs. This however does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to show why Public Servants shouldn't be paid more. Because they work for the public does not mean that you get to ignore the kind of responsibilities a job carries and paid accordingly to those responsibilities. 400K is not even remotely enough.

I left this for last. So the **** what?

Lets not forget all the benefits they get after they get out. The lobbying connections, "charity" donations, and other quite lucrative deals.

It's far too much. If some person thinks that it's not enough money to serve their country in that capacity, then they shouldn't run for office. And anyone who wouldn't run for office because it's not enough money is NOT someone I'd want for president anyway.

Apparently some people actually give a **** about that. Usually high powered people who like to be in the spotlight. Like, oh, I dunno... world leaders.

EDIT: 400k is more than many - if not most - Americans make in 15 - 20 years. 400k PLUS NO EXPENSES. Plus travel anywhere they want to go. You may think that living without expenses is "nothing" but I assure you it's considered part of a salary package. Then, after 4 - 8 years (and becoming a ****ing millionaire), they get 200k a year for the rest of their lives. They don't ever have to work again and can live quite happily on that amount of money until they fall into the grave.

It's far too much to make our Presidents millionaires for a 4 - 8 year service.

Definitely. And one more thing...

The pay, allowances, and all other remuniration for public officials should always be subject to a vote of the people. That should settle it.

I'm more interested in term limits.

Dear God, please no more term limits for legislators. That's one of the things gumming up California right now. All of the politicians that have been in office for a while, have mellowed out, have figured out how everything works, and have formed the relationships that help facilitate comprimise, get the boot and are replaced by idiot firebrands from Orange County and San Francisco that come to Sacramento with these ideological blinders, and nothing gets done. I think that's one of the three biggest things that need to be changed here, next to initiative rules and the 2/3 budget rule.

Re: A Pay Cut For All Elected Politicians

Term limits are a bad idea ?
Probably.
What is a bad idea is having our reps running for two year terms....this is insane...
Doing nothing is a bad idea
Are our government people overpaid ?
In most cases, IMO, YES.
I "talked " revolution 20 years ago, now I believe it is needed....its too late for reform.

what kind of revolution do you have in mind

I've always been caught between the 'people who run should do so because they fear what lesser people would do in their place' (Socrates in case you're wondering) and therefore shouldn't get paid and high salaries are needed to attract top talent.

On one hand idiots in government gets us idiot government. But high salaries are expensive and we STILL get idiots in government who are also often corrupt.

Benjamin Franklin onced warned of man's greed for both power and wealth mixing in a dangerous way if we pay our President at all.

I believe that elected officials- including the President as well as Congressmen- should not be paid any more than the median national income. In fact, it would be great if they could be paid less. Most elected officials are rich anyways, which was part of Franklin's point.

how does it go, and who said it?
something like, the job pays X amount plus all you can steal....

Re: A Pay Cut For All Elected Politicians

Best to have many, many more men involved in all levels of politics.
Ask questions, demand answers, straight answers, not bull-feces.

Now we do have an economic recession.

If unions are asked to take pay cuts, then too, the government people should also take pay cuts....
Everyone(the overpaid)* should take pay cuts...this crisis, is, IMO, real...
But we must know why this happened and who is responsible..and those people must be forced to step forward..
This is the revolution part..
A march on Washington is necessary, the unemployed can do this and should....
*this may even include the janitorial position @ $14 per hour with 700 applicants..

Article I, Section. 6. The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States.
Read your Constitution.

I’ve favor a pay cut with no raises for an X amount of years.
I’d like to see the size of government cut by at least ½ also.
