So here it is:

I am 25. I grew up a conservative. My parents both have (I have just found this out) Jesus Christ syndrome: they run around making choices for other people with the idea that they are somehow not human themselves. They don't get why they always end up offending people. They throw money at charity without going to any charity events.

My Dad's problem is best manifest in his decision to write Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee - Google Book Search . Harper Lee is private as hell, and she asked him and other biographers not to write about her. My dad decided that for some greater public good, people should learn about Harper Lee's personal life as told through his eyes of "pure objectivity". He fails to see that in doing so, he has robbed everyone else the right to define Harper Lee and her message themselves, AND he made money from doing so.

My Mom's problem is taking over the lives of other people and not understanding why they depend on her afterwards. She writes prescriptions for schedule II stuff for people then gets angry at them for being addicted to it. Every single patient she tells me about is either a hero or a villian: the people she writes prescriptions for are the pure heroes. The people that asked for prescriptions and got denied are the pure villians.

So after 25 years of walking around making people angry by giving them stuff they didn't ask for, here I am: suddenly aware of why religious people knocking on doors are so creepy.

But here is the main point: My parent's Jesus Christ syndrome made one a doctor and the other a high school educator for 25 years. They may be unaware of their own self serving nature, but it sure as hell made other people around them happy/cured (sometimes). Their own lack of human awareness seemed to enable the power to actually solve problems.

So my choice is to walk around thinking I'm God and solving everyone's problems (which I can and will do as a computer science/engineering major), or be aware of everyone else's humanity and my own actions and possibly render myself impotent to actually solve anything.

Should I be the Bible thumping Batman figure causing more problems than I solve, or should I be the bleeding heart humanitarian that ends up changing nothing and annoying the hell out of everyone.

This post is more or less rhetorical by the way - I could not have written it if it was for no audience. That lacks conviction somehow...

Alright......what?

Jesus did not make choices for people...he offered one

Think your analogy may be a little off

I don't think anyone is ready to be the next Jesus.

However my answer is in my signature. Go the good route man.

Oh man. This guy just doesn't get it.

Most Modern Satanist feel they are their own god and it seems to work well for a lot of them. :)

Jesus chose to make Mary Magdawhore cry on his feet while letting himself be tortured to death.

The failure of Jesus Christ syndrome is in realizing that allowing yourself to come to physical harm and letting other people see it causes them to suffer. It is a fundamental lack of human awareness in the empathy of other people.

And what if I have the arrogance to run around doing things for people that they could have done themselves.

How good is too good?

Here is my example: I just gave a laptop and a gigabit wireless router to my next door neighbors so I could share their internet connection. They both know my stated motivation is bull****. Now the husband thinks I want to **** his wife, and the wife thinks I'm out of my mind (she's right).

I just made two people that may or may not have been happy and comfortable, unhappy and uncomfortable by giving them too much too fast.

Say hello to Jesus. He lives in my head. He ruins parties. He does more harm than good.

Help me kill Jesus. I am learning to hate him.

We had enough problems when Bush tried to be God. we don't need more.

Anyone running for president is playing God. If you don't know that, you are just as dangerous.

Oh man. This guy just doesn't get it.

You are right, I don't. I know I don't, and THAT IS WHY I AM HERE.

Giggle all you want. My type blows up buildings if we don't get enlightened. Consider this the chance I offer you to stop a blooming fundamentalist. Take this post exactly as seriously as that. My mind is not yet closed.

How does that make them anything like Jesus?

Your dad may have invaded Lee's privacy by writing that book, but celebrities are generally lose a bit of their privacy when they become celebrities. Especially a person as important to their field as Harper Lee was to literature. Works about the life of important people are very important to society. I'd hardly call his decision here taking over her life.

He fails to see that in doing so, he has robbed everyone else the right to define Harper Lee and her message themselves, AND he made money from doing so.

Your dad writing a book about Lee didn't stop anyone else of the right to define Harper Lee. If he wrote his biography correctly he didn't even define Harper Lee. He told the story of her life. Everyone else is free to write their own biography of her if they so choose. He didn't stop anyone from writing about Harper Lee any more than Stephen E. Ambrose stopped anyone from writing about WWII.

My Mom's problem is taking over the lives of other people and not understanding why they depend on her afterwards. Your mom is helping protect people's health. When she writes the prescriptions she isn't trying to hurt them or take over their lives. They come to her for medical advice to take control of a part of their lives.

So after 25 years of walking around making people angry by giving them stuff they didn't ask for, here I am: suddenly aware of why religious people knocking on doors are so creepy.

You're trying to say your parents aren't human because they help people? Yes by helping people they are helping themselves, but they are providing a valuable service to society. The difference between them and Jesus (at least in the mythology of Christianity) is that he wasn't truly human. He was God's son who took a task for no personal gain at all.

So my choice is to walk around thinking I'm God and solving everyone's problems (which I can and will do as a computer science/engineering major), or be aware of everyone else's humanity and my own actions and possibly render myself impotent to actually solve anything.

How did you come to the conclusion that those two options are mutually exclusive?

Should I be the Bible thumping Batman figure causing more problems than I solve, or should I be the bleeding heart humanitarian that ends up changing nothing and annoying the hell out of everyone.
Again, how in the world did you possibly make this connection?

This post is more or less rhetorical by the way - I could not have written it if it was for no audience. That lacks conviction somehow...

And anyone who reads this is coming off confused and a little tired.

Perhaps Jesus was looking at the "Big" picture and she was just collateral damage?

Yes Jesus was looking at the big picture, our spiritual salvation. The physical world and Mary were not in any way colateral damage.

Good works do not count for much, but they are the right thing to do. Giving a laptop to your neighbor is not something Jesus would do according to scripture. If they were hungry, he would give them food.

It almost sounds like the OP has not learned the difference between want and need. It also does not appear he understands the difference between helping your fellow man or just looking like a self absorbed jerk.

So where do you go from here?

By not being locked up yet consider it the chance society offers YOU to rethink YOUR views on life in general, and YOUR one chance for life here on earth.

Absurd. She chose to do that.

False dichotomy.
You can be fully aware of what your acts will do to bepople, and be fully emphatic to their feelings regarding same -- and still choose to undertake that act.

If anyone should approach this same question, here is the conclusion I have reached for myself:

I do not need to be seen by other people as God to solve the problem I have chosen to solve, and will not allow any parent to use what I will do for humanity as justification for repeating what my parents have done to me. I am the end for which the means must be erased. I will complete that end without validating the means of my creation.
