Will the US Become a Banana Republic? by Marc Faber

Is the US slowly becoming a banana republic?

Please refrain from your usual outburst and calling me anti-American again..
I'd say its certainly possible.

Given our loose fiscal policy, our approx 53 trillion in debt, and rampant populism it could be that we are heading the way Argentina has.

Be careful what you read on Lew Rockwell though. Sometimes the articles on their are junk.

I didnt get it from Lew Rockwell. I got it from a Norwegian economics newspaper, but the first English source I found was the page I linked to, and it seems like authentic Mark Faber.

"googled": mark faber US banana republic

Their are some level headed libertarians on Lew Rockwell but as Tashah pointed out this guy is about the negative of everything.

But not to get away from your point, we here are going to come to a cross roads about what is important to us.

That is more government benefits or a stable economy and I'm not sure which way the populists will turn. I'd say it will likely be to government benefits though.

Yes, the guy is pretty extreme, but he also have some extremely valid points.

I would totally agree. You have to filter out the bs to get to the meat.

A lot of times my fellow libertarians get out of control with the "OhHSS NOSS"
crap.

I pointed out Argentina because of the similar situations that are/have happened. It's very possible that we cause the flop on ourselves.

Most democratic type governments only have a 200 year life span.

There are huge problems with democracy that cannot really be addressed. Even in Europe now its turning into two opposing poles of extremes that work against each other, while all middle ground is disappearing slowly..

Just like in the US politics in Europe is increasingly becoming about media appearance and not substance, more about white teeth and money than about political platform and serious and difficult changes. Its not about proving that you are right anymore, its more about discrediting everyone else the most. And so fourth even democracy in Europe is in decline like it surely has been for awhile in the US.

Democracy in the US is reaching the last stage of democracy, while democracy in Europe is approaching the last stage, if we aren't in it already.

That is more or less how I feel about it to. The people are exploiting the largess of the treasury, it is really a matter of time before it comes to a head.

I try to think that their is something that can change this effect, this last election was a complete crap shoot.

I hope a third party makes a push for more seats in 2 years or for the President in 4. That may help correct the negative actions of the last 80 years.

And yes, then you have the rich who are taking over politics, and the media who controls how people end up voting. And even if you aren't brainwashed or fooled by all these things and the things in the previous post, then your vote doesn't actually matter anyways, 1 vote amongst 300 million, an excuse to call it democracy while there are no other ways the people can affect politics, unless of course they are rich.

1 vote among 3 matters greatly.
1 vote amongst 5 is mostly deciding.
1 vote amongst 10 is meaningful.
1 vote amongst 20 has an effect on the result.
1 vote amongst 50 matters.
1 vote amongst 100 doesnt mean much.
1 vote amongst 1.000 matters little.
1 vote amongst 100.000 is meaningless.
1 vote amongst millions is completely irrelevant.

Having only two OPTIONS makes it even more meaningless.

I have a weird suspicion that France will have a Communist uprising in the future, and that the uprising will succeed, and that France will become a Communist nation.

Yeah, whatever France does is an example for others to follow apparently. Lest that is what all have been doing.

Isn't this an argument against expanding the power of the EU at the expense of much more local governments?

What are you talking about? Isnt that completely irrelevant? In any case its somewhat that as well. I believe in regional governance, but I also believe in semi democratic elite governments that leads those in the right direction.

What country are you from?

What if I was from Texas?

Actually my home country is also turning into a Banana Republic. So I am pre-emptively admitting that before you need to know which country it is.. Even so I have told it tons of times on this forum..

Still need to know?

Sometimes I don't even know where to start with you and your complete ignorance of everything that is American.

1. 300 million people in this country do not vote. More like 80-110 million VOTERS.

2. People who aren't rich can affect politics. Case and point Obama, VP. Biden, Sarah Palin, Cindy Sheehan, McCain. Most of these people weren't rich when they started out and to this day they aren't remotely rich by whatever standards it is you think 'rich' is. I'd wager anything it just means somebody who works and gets paid for more then 40 hours a week of work.

3. The definition of democracy :

democracy - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

1 a: government by the people ; especially : rule of the majority b: a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections

The United States is a Representative Republic. Meaning the people elect their representatives. Why do I bring this up?

Well in every state we have :

1. Representatives. These people are elected by a minute percentage of the U.S. ie. the people who live in the corresponding district.

2. Governors. Once again elected but this time by the entire state to preserve the idea that every single state is a sovereign state.

3. Senators. Once again elected by the people of their corresponding states.

4. POTUS : The CinC/Head Executive of the entire United States eligible voting population.

So what have we established?

1. You do not know the definition of a 'democracy'.

2. You do not know how a democracy works i.e. ONE person, ONE vote.

3. You do not know how the United States government works.

4. You do not know who does and doesn't vote in the United States.

5. Your premise that people who aren't rich can not have an effect on politics.

I am too lazy to make a list of all the stuff you dont know about, and it would take ages to make a list of things you do not understand.. Yet I am even too smart and dignified to make such a list about you..

You are pathetic.. Your own ignorance makes you think I do not know about those things, while in reality you know nothing about todays democracy and todays world, therefor you think I am wrong, when my analyzes is base on deep thinking and yours only on scratching the surface, not even that, just blindly listening to others, like any good American.. I am finished with you, ignoring you, you have absolutely no intelligent input in debates, and your claims about what others know and not know, based on your own knowledge or ignorance is just straight though pathetic.. Goodbye.. *ignore hatuey*

I think it's more like United States of Walmart.

MZ, obviously you do not like our nation...not than anyone ever asked you to..
The banana republic thing is just silly and disrespectful..

Its better, much better that American citizens critique their own nation, rather than having foreigners do it...We do, more or less, know what is going on and why; you, on the other hand just know what you hear and read - both of these are slanted....
I, for one, will not criticize Europe, nor Norway; but I would love to know a lot more than I do..
You see, MZ, what I read about Europe is also slanted and partially true at best.....
