If You Were President...

If you were President, how would you fix crisis?

Honestly, I would get a bunch of the most important economic thinkers, lock myself and them in a room for a week and talk it out. If something should be done, they can explain to me why, and why that something is better than another's idea. If I don't understand something, there's gonna be some learnin' goin' on.
 
I believe at least a moderate recession is both inevitable and necessary. That is, there is no fix.

But that doesn't mean anyone should have to fear it (with)...
  1. good public health care
  2. reasonable public housing
  3. more unemployment benefits

And since sustainability is critical (a)...
  1. more progressive income tax
  2. moderate inheritance tax
  3. high luxury tax
 
I used it as an analogy.

Marxism and Libertarianism are both political ideologies that are basically religions to their adherents.
Now that is interesting.
And those who fall in love with their ideas and agenda are trying to walk on water...
And mans attempts to relieve human misery......we now know that neither of the above are effective....at least most of us...
There will always be a degree of this suffering...

If I were President, I would request a Congressional Investigation as to the cause of the financial crisis.
Men would have to answer tough questions, without any blaming others and politicing...
On our automakers, I do not wish to see any more fail...Maybe corporations should not be allowed to grow so much that their possible downfall could create so much misery on the people..
We must study the success of the Germans and Japanese...
But, IMO, its one word..
Respect.

NONE of the above three items are legitimate government functions. The correct and constitutional function of government is to is to keep its nose out of our business and PROTECT our right to provide these for ourselves.

I'd take most of those along with dismantling many government agencies including but not limited to Department of Education, Homeland Security, NSA, OIA, etc. Return as much power to the States as possible, and let people start figuring out how to solve their own problems.

Uh-huh, read the constitution and try to justify in the same plain english that it's written in all of the excessive regulations, social programs, and the progressive income tax.

Increase taxes on the rich people and corporations. Get the hell out of Irag.

I'd decriminalize and tax marijuana.

I'd create a national lottery.

I'd sell naming rights to national monuments. i.e., The Lincoln Memorial brought to you by Roca wear.

I guess its okay for the country to make money off of suckers. Seems wrong, though, somehow.

If you check on the odds of winning the Florida lottery, it's about 14,000,000 to 1. That's a true loser's game, right there. I imagine the numbers would be even worse for a national lottery. The good thing is that would be a tax I wouldn't ever pay.

I meant that it's taking advantage of people (weak suckers). That may be legal in this case, and therefore not wrong, but it sure isn't anything to be proud of.

I'm with Kandahar. Raise the gas tax.

Our entire tax code takes advantage of suckers. So do insurance companies. Many lenders do.

Yeah, the trick is not to be a sucker. Never buy whole-life insurance, only sign simple interest loans, and take every possible tax deduction you can. Those are just a few rules to live by, there are many others.

Edit-Also, never play the lottery. You will not win.

If I were Augustus I would save our beloved empire with public works. Massive public works.

What kind of public works? Do any of them involve eminent domain? If you spent years building a fine home, would you let it be destroyed and accept a token sum of less than half its replacement value?

For those that wish to end or reduce welfare and social programs? What would you suggest we put in place to help our fellow man?

Nothing. Welfare is NOT a legitimate government function.

And one more thing: Learn the concept of "promote tjhe general welfare." It is NOT government handouts. It is the protection of people's natural rights to do things for themselves.

I would recycle this memorial to America's second greatest traitor (after FDR) and replace it with a memorial to America's greatest recent patriot -- Ron Paul.


I have to chuckle at the liberals who say they would drastically reduce government spending.

I would perform all the government downsizing I could possibly do ASAP before something like that happened.
