Depends on the context. The only one I've never heard of is the Octothorpe.

I learned it as pound for the phone, and hashtag for the computer.

All the above? (Comes down to context, no?)

Depends what generation you hail from, imo.

Probably this.

That nobody has selected "hashtag" so far suggests we don't have very many young people on DP.

So we are a bunch of old fogies? :lamo

It really does depend. If I see "#saying" i say hashtag. If I see "dial #" then i call it pound.

The start of a single line comment in code for many programming languages.

Example:

#Set Storage Context
$StorageContext = New-AzStorageContext -StorageAccountName $StorageAccountName -StorageAccountKey $StorageAccountKey

#Get Storage Tables
try {
$LogTable = (Get-AzStorageTable -Name $LogTableName -Context $StorageContext -ErrorAction Stop).CloudTable
}
catch {
Write-Error -Message "Error accessing log table. Error message was: $_.Exception.Message"
return
}

The "#" symbol can mean (depending on context)
  • Number
  • Pound (weight, not currency)
  • Hashtag (Twitter specific)
  • Octothorpe (telephony & computers)
  • Sharp (music)
  • Primorial (number theory, e.g. 12# = 2 × 3 × 5 × 7 × 11 = 2310)

Anyone know why adding machines and touchtone keyboards don’t match?

My friends on +ma's reversing studio website called it a programming hashtag in 1996. They're in Italy, but I don't think that it matters. The latest version of C programming is called C# (C sharp). As a musician, I like that.

As a long time CAD draftsman, it should be called hatchtag.

Lol, look at all the Boomers still calling it a "pound sign". :D

If you were a math geek into number theory then it would be the primorial of a number. As in P[SUB]n[/SUB]#. Where n equals the number of prime numbers to multiply: P[SUB]5[/SUB]# = 2 * 3 * 5 * 7 * 11 = 2,310

It can also be denoted as a number followed by the primorial symbol. As in: 20# = 2 * 3 * 5 * 7 * 11 * 13 * 17 * 19 = 9,699,690

In Europe I hear it called hashtag and Americans I hear calling it a pound sign.

I've never heard of octothorpe, but now that I have that is what I'm calling it.

Thank you good sir.

weird name since octo denotes 8 and it has 9 cells
