By my personal observations, racism up north stretches beyond the black/white thing. Hell, here in the city where I live, I have witnessed the Germans berate the Polish, Serbians just act like assholes to everybody, Mexican's are looked upon as "niggers" by just about everybody. Jews keep amongst themselves, and anyone from the south is treated like a Beverly Hillbilly. There are so many sub-cultures here that place themselves above any other culture, it's like a prejudice stew.

Keep in mind, however, I speak only in the most general of terms. There are cool people every where ya go. (Those are the one's I hang with. I'm prejudice that way. ;) )

I played a German wedding in Greenfield, just north of Milwaukee once. Holy crap, was that one ever fun. :)

Probably an anglicized version of the Portuguese/Spanish 'negro' or the French 'negre'. The word 'nigger' was used in one form or another(negroes) for more then 200 years by the government, slave owners and the white majority in America. Somewhere around the mid 1800s it began carrying a negative connotation and it was replaced by the word 'Colored'. Because of the history of the word one can not consider calling a black person a 'nigger' to be racist. Do you agree?

It's how slurry-ass antebellum Southerners said "negro"....

The derivation is probably from the Latin word, niger, which means black. Many slaves were imported from Nigeria and surrounding areas.

They were very likely originally called "Nigers." But people misspell and misprounounce words all the time, and so the "N" word was born.

Is it racist? I would say yes. But then look at the lyrics of many songs by black artists. Guess what word you find repeated over and over.

In addition, many blacks consider "Negro" and "Colored" racist as well.
