So he can present himself to the American people as a mature statesman more worthy of the position of President than Donald Trump and capable of putting Donald Trump's feet to the fire for his long list of misjudgments, instead of looking like a cowardly dotard holed up in his basement.

I hope they debate but I see the democrats already setting up their excuse for not doing so. Americans on both sides should be mortified at the prospect of no debates. Democrat leaders will try to keep Joe in the Basement until after election day if they can. They aren't worried about a true election process, just a win.
 
I'd like to see it. I would honestly be surprised if Trump participated at all.
 
Trump would wipe the floor with Biden.
 
It depends on how well he can still remember canned responses. He has been horrible in interviews and anything unscripted, and generally performed poorly in debates with fellow Democrats.

By the way, swing_voter, I meant to address your first part: Biden is way ahead in the polls as you say. But let us examine the counterfactual to the corollary of that: Is it your position that if Biden started to fall in the polls and/or Donald Trump gained and they became even or close to even, then he should call for a debate? That sounds pretty weak sister to me.

It's politics. The rules don't say anything about a debate.

Trump can refuse to debate as well.


Or Joe Biden could say, let's see your taxes Donald, then I'll debate you.

He could, but that would look petty and I don’t see that sitting well with centrist voters who don’t care about taxes. No one talking about tax returns has ever actually read a candidates tax returns
 
Who in the world still hasn't made up their mind who they are going to vote for?

The only reason people watch the debate is to hope their opponent screw up. Their is no requirement to answer the question they just simply go off on a planned tangent.

The only thing people have to ask themselves is "Are you better off now than you were 4 years ago". That's it.
 
If it were a debate on the issues Trump wouldn't stand a chance

But trump voters don't understand the issues either. That is why his racist pep rallies work so well.

He shouldn't, but at this point, he has no choice. He'll get destroyed, and the pressures of the campaign will further his mental problems.

He's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

Trump is pretty decent at debating even if some or a lot of what he says is ridiculous. He slapped around his primary opponents like children and overpowered Hillary quite easily.
