I am both proud and ashamed of various things my country has done and continues to do. But in aggregate, the pride I have of our accomplishments far outweighs the shame I have of our embarrassments.
All societies have their beauty and their ugliness. Talking about and acting to reduce the latter doesn't need to cast a shadow on the former.

I'm happy to be an American.
There are maybe some other places I'd be happy to live, too; but there are plenty more that I'd not be happy living in.
I often have to explain to people that not everyone agrees
Should your amount of patriotism depend on the person in office? I'm very proud to be American and it doesn't change depending on who we elect.
Anybody that needs that explained to them is probably too stupid to be worth the effort.
Obviously can't participate in the poll, but I've always been curious about being "proud" to be live in a country. It's a weird thing to be proud of, especially if you were just born into it. I'm proud of my personal accomplishments. I admire the personal accomplishments of others. Being proud of your geographical location seems a weird flex - despite the fact that it is a common sentiment. It's kinda like saying I'm proud to be human.
Is it just a different way of saying you love living in your country?
Anyone who thinks we have not done moronic things all over the world is a blind partisan
This is a non sequitur.

What's your opinion of people that openly express unmitigated hatred and disgust towards our nation?
And yet true
Why say that in response to what I said? It just seems bizarre.
Why not be proud to be human? We're pretty bad ass. It might be similar in many ways to saying you love your country.
lol...I dunno, being born something isn't exactly an accomplishment, and there should be some reason for pride, no? There are plenty of other positive words - happy, relieved, etc... but pride implies something was done to be proud of.
(I get that I'm discussing semantics, I'm a nerd like that, and if you feel it's derailing your thread, I won't be offended if you decide to move on...hehe...)
Thank you for your opinion

I agree with thus sentiment. When I travel abroad though I often have to explain to people that not everyone agrees with all the moronic things we do
I'm proud of my son because of the person he is. Why is it weird to be proud of my nation because of what it is? It doesn't need to be my personal accomplishment for me to be proud of it. That's not a requirement for pride at all.
Acknowledging our ugliness is an important part of patriotism. Ignoring it is nothing more than nationalism.
