Keep in mind that a handful of years ago their yearly GDP was smaller than the city of Tokyo.

These polls are useless, and largely miss the point.

Some of the most damage to this nation resulting in loss of life occurred with not too much funding but well played coordination and execution of a plan. If Russia decides to exploit some vulnerability to cause anything from further intimation up to real losses then it is largely irrelevant what their GDP is.

IMHO, Russia alone is a fairly small threat, but when combined with other (existing) threats that may amplify what havoc they could (would?) create to the moderate level.

Holy ****! You people have NO CLUE what kind of a threat Russia is -- not only to every democracy in the world -- but to the entire European Union and all of Europe! You guys need to catch up on US- Russia history. Start with World War II and work your way up from there. You are babes in the woods and those types always get eaten by wolves.

To give you just one tiny example of the kind of threat Russia is, they succeeded in dividing the United States.

Do you think Russia is stupid enough to ramp up hostilities? They understand their place in the world. They're not the super villain stereotypes they're made out to be in movies. Also their GDP is not irrelevant in a discussion about their level of threat to our way of life.

Could you flesh out your opinion? Who could they combine with and to what end?

I think your mind has been warped by propaganda and that you fail to see reality.

People like you let Russia divide the people.

Glad I could help.

As if we weren't already divided. :lamo Some people wouldn't know what to do without a boogeyman I suppose.

No sir, you haven't been paying attention to what Putin has done. I hope you will pay a little more attention now that it appears he has paid Taliban to kill your fellow American soldiers.

Various other nations and/or 'terrorist' groups. Look at the huge US military and economic costs resulting from the 9/11/2001 'terror' attacks carried out by 19 morons "armed" with box cutters.

My point was that we are spending loads on "defense" now while fighting (endless?) mini-wars on drugs and terror while playing world policeman in several other nations - it would not take much more to stretch us past our capability to take on more enemies, especially considering the current added COVID-19 response expenses.

I lived through tons more history that you may ever be lucky, or unlucky as the case may be, to get to experience. Live and learn.

Is it possible to deescalate the situation with Russia?

"Appears" is fact to you?

The intel agencies have said that it was uncorroborated and you still run with your BS?

You cannot rule it out, they are already pushing as far as they can.

Quit pretending they are being passive, we know otherwise.

One must learn from history, but one must also understand that things change.

Oh yes, obviously it only 'appears' to be the case that Trump lied his ass off again. But the proof will come out, wait for it.

They do what they can here and there to manipulate things. We do it too; everybody does it. It's nothing to piss our pants over. They're not a threat to us.

It's already out in your mind, even thought the intel agencies said it was never corroborated.

Perhaps, but it is certainly possible not to escalate it.

The people in Russia are just people too, right? They're not evil lunatics that want to destroy the world, right? Maybe it wouldn't be that hard to reason with them. We'd probably have to start by humanizing them.

Enjoy being in the minority with that opinion, I am sure those in Ukraine who lost Crimea or those in Syria who were gassed to death would very much disagree with you.

The same could be said of the people of Iran or DPRK - the problem is with leadership which stands between us and them.

The people that live in Crimea wanted to secede but Ukraine would not let them. The people got what they wanted. That situation doesn't bother me. Also Ukraine is not the United States. We're not the police.
