Should racist/hateful people be targeted and have their lives destroyed by the public?

They get banned from social media, lose their jobs, get ostracized and anything else the public can do to make them suffer for their ignorant beliefs. This forces them to hide in fringe echo chambers that reinforce their ignorant beliefs. It allows them to convince themselves and others that they are victims. It potentially makes them more dangerous. Is this the best way to handle things? Ignorance does not hold up to logical scrutiny. Rather than hating and trying to destroy these people, something not incredibly different than what they do, should we instead defeat them in open discussion and with level heads so all can see unquestionably that their views are ridiculous?

Ultimately, the only way to defeat racism is to reduce the number of racists by winning them over to the side of progressive politics. It's worth keeping in mind that whilst Nazism and Fascism defend legal and political inequalities, they work to attract people based on greater state intervention to improve the social and economic conditions of their favoured groups (usually Whites and Christians). We have to take a hard look at the grievances that are involved in people becoming involved in racist groups and ideologies. Removing statues and changing public discourse can only go so far, largely in making society appear more "inclusive" than it really is.

The emotional appeal and resonance of racist grievances and ideologies is no doubt powerful, but we have to find better ways of winning the argument than not discussing these issues at all. We have to show them that, even if they may have legitimate concerns on issues such as immigration, the difficulties of living in religious tolerance and ethnically diverse societies, we have to show we that they have the wrong solutions- particularly when it is the path of violence against minority groups, many of whom face similar social and economic distress as the vulnerable people who can be led in to white nationalism and white supremacy. We need to think bigger than hiding the symptoms of racism in our public discourse and figure out what the real causes of racism are in our society and design policies and institutions to address them.
 
Freedom of speech is not freedom from criticism or consequences. Racists gotta stop crying.
 
America is about freedom no matter what crazy perspectives you have. We can't be forcing everyone in America to conform to one viewpoint. As long as your actions don't effect another person directly you are free to express your views.

Racist are their own worst enemies. Society is begining to not accept this viewpoint. All we can do is hope that future generations will not express this behavior and today's racist just die out.

Racists don't get in on the "when they came for" thing. It's totally ****ed up to believe they do.


When they came for the nazis, I said nothing... When they came for me, no nazis were there to help me. But I was okay with that because I hate nazis and really the only good thing about the ordeal was there were no more nazis so at least something good happened in society during my life. And so, despite them having come for me, I was happy.

That's how that goes.

Unfortunately, many progressives view speech as violence, hence it does effect another person directly which means such speech should be suppressed.

No, I don't think they should have their lives destroyed for the reasons you listed. But we live in a very judgemental and unforgiving world, and because of the internet, anything you say on record will be made public and held against you. Do I think people like Amy Cooper should be exposed even though their lives will be ruined? Yes I do. Unfortunately for them the victims of racism should come first. So while it sucks for them, their actions deserve to be made public.
