Maybe Martin Luther King Jr., writing from an Alabama jail where he was arrested for civil disobedience, can help explain why sometimes simple "peaceful protests" just don't cut it anymore:

"You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. It is unfortunate that demonstrations are taking place in Birmingham, but it is even more unfortunate that the city's white power structure left the Negro community with no alternative...

We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed. Frankly, I have yet to engage in a direct action campaign that was "well timed" in the view of those who have not suffered unduly from the disease of segregation. For years now I have heard the word "Wait!" It rings in the ear of every Negro with piercing familiarity. This "Wait" has almost always meant "Never." We have waited for more than 340 years for our constitutional and God given rights. The nations of Asia and Africa are moving with jetlike speed toward gaining political independence, but we still creep at horse and buggy pace toward gaining a cup of coffee at a lunch counter. Perhaps it is easy for those who have never felt the stinging darts of segregation to say, "Wait." But when you have seen vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim; when you have seen hate filled policemen curse, kick and even kill your black brothers and sisters; when you see the vast majority of your twenty million Negro brothers smothering in an airtight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society; when you suddenly find your tongue twisted and your speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six year old daughter why she can't go to the public amusement park that has just been advertised on television, and see tears welling up in her eyes when she is told that Funtown is closed to colored children, and see ominous clouds of inferiority beginning to form in her little mental sky, and see her beginning to distort her personality by developing an unconscious bitterness toward white people; when you have to concoct an answer for a five year old son who is asking: "Daddy, why do white people treat colored people so mean?"; when you take a cross county drive and find it necessary to sleep night after night in the uncomfortable corners of your automobile because no motel will accept you; when you are humiliated day in and day out by nagging signs reading "white" and "colored"; when your first name becomes "nigger," your middle name becomes "boy" (however old you are) and your last name becomes "John," and your wife and mother are never given the respected title "Mrs."; when you are harried by day and haunted by night by the fact that you are a Negro, living constantly at tiptoe stance, never quite knowing what to expect next, and are plagued with inner fears and outer resentments; when you are forever fighting a degenerating sense of "nobodiness"--then you will understand why we find it difficult to wait. There comes a time when the cup of endurance runs over, and men are no longer willing to be plunged into the abyss of despair. I hope, sirs, you can understand our legitimate and unavoidable impatience. You express a great deal of anxiety over our willingness to break laws. This is certainly a legitimate concern. Since we so diligently urge people to obey the Supreme Court's decision of 1954 outlawing segregation in the public schools, at first glance it may seem rather paradoxical for us consciously to break laws. One may well ask: "How can you advocate breaking some laws and obeying others?" The answer lies in the fact that there are two types of laws: just and unjust. I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. I would agree with St. Augustine that "an unjust law is no law at all."

If this violence spills over into the suburbs, it won't end well for the rioters. It appears people are locked and loaded prepared to protect their families and property.

I suspect it wouldn't end well for the suburbanites either. Let's hope it never comes to that.
 
I would argue that the entire system is the bully and when their victims do anything to strike back, they act like bullies always do. A man lost his job for protesting by taking a knee. Many more were ridiculed for wearing tee shirts with "I can't breathe" on them. So peaceful protest is not allowed it seems which leaves only one option and we are seeing it. We have given the police far too much power with no accountability. This has to end or we will see this happen over and over again.

people lose their jobs all the time for doing stuff that their employer doesn't like. a woman lost her job for refusing to cook the numbers on COVID-19 deaths. People lose their jobs for saying stuff on social media platforms such as Face Book, when their employers think those comments are deleterious to the good of the employer. The silly football player was employed by a corporation that needs public support in order to be successful. The owners or managers of that corporation determined that an employee who shows disrespect for the national anthem is going to hurt their business. Government has NOTHING to do with that. I am sure lots of you on the left would support a business firing a guy who posts comments supporting the National Alliance or the White Aryan Resistance or The Klan.

You seem unable to distinguish between government agents or actors using the color of law to suppress free speech vs a private corporation or private citizens exercising their rights concerning statements they find upsetting or harmful.

I am on a FB group that is essential firearms enthusiasts in SW Ohio. Lots of cops, vets, gun shop managers, competitive shooters. Four I know are SF or SEAL vets. at least 15 are US Army vets from Iraq or Afghanistan. You are absolutely right.

many suburban areas-at least in Columbus and cincinnati, are separate municipal governments. The police departments are not under control of a city council that has to pander to inner city concerns. I live in a City about a half hour from Cincinnati. Our police department is very good and well supported and the tax base is very strong. Our police department's main job is protecting the lives and property of the tax payers in our town. If rioters spill over from Cincinnati, our PD is not going to worry about upsetting the Cincinnati lefties who pander to the cop haters.

They are still harassing and severely injuring people, reporters are getting unjustly arrested and people are getting shot by weapons that inflict gashes in their heads and in some cases put their eyes out. Those cops were purposely aiming for people’s heads and are acting like they are occupying forces in Iraq... you can hear the sheer glee in their voices when they shout “light em up” what in the utter **** excuses this type of behavior?! The people shot by rubber bullets right in front of their own homes were not rioters nor looters. Can anyone with this punk ass attitude about shooting people honestly defend this ****?
 
Yes, I fully support it as long as it is to bring awareness to the racism that us blacks deal with on a daily basis. We protested peacefully by kneeling and having peaceful protests and people were enraged about the kneeling. Now I think we finally have people's attention.

I've had guns drawn on me and my brother by police when I was 16 and forced to lay face down on the ground while they searched his car. Of course they found nothing and were disgusted to not find anything in our car.

I can't even recall how many times I've been pulled over for no reason to have my car searched.

Blue state politicians are hoping and praying for T[emoji631]R[emoji631]U[emoji631]M[emoji631]P to pull the trigger on the problem they created in the hopes of derailing the T[emoji631]R[emoji631]U[emoji631]M[emoji631]P T R A I N. They purposefully are keeping police from doing what needs to be done, shootin. They are purposefully delaying the curfews late into the dark of night to enable burnin and lootin. But in the end, righteousness will prevail over these godless moron children of the left. Praise God.

Ultimately the only thing that is going to stop this is MAJOR changes are made in the structure of policing or perhaps complete dismantling of the institution and rebuilding into a mechanism for restorative justice.

Asking these folks to "reform" themselves is ridiculous. Getting a state/city to prosecute it's own employees is not going to happen without totally eliminating the concept of "internal investigations". When crimes committed by government agents are treated as "personnel matters" or blamed on management/training "deficiencies" then there is little (if any) hope of "reform" from within.

I don't know that I fully agree, in Dallas they convicted a female officer and sent her to prison and in Ft Worth they are going to put an officer on trial and off to prison for a similar shooting. DFW has done hard work cleaning up their Police Depts and have made good strides towards correcting the issue. Yes, not everyone is and it still isn't perfect but at least some have been and are trying to get there
 
I don't like the looting and rioting but when you systematically violate our Constitutional rights people are going to fight back when their voices are not being heard.

I sense Conservatives are more likely to not support the rioting which I find strange because they are huge 2A supporters and act like if someone came to get their guns it'd be an all at war because it's their Constitutional right to own a gun. Why are they not so supportive of other people fighting for our other rights? Also, I would be on the side on the 2A riots too if it came down to that.

Random destruction, assaults, battery, theft, and any other violent reaction serves no useful purpose.

On the contrary, it damages one's own community in ways that take a long time, if ever, to repair. Meanwhile that community still has to deal day-to-day with the long-term negative outcomes.

The only ones who profit from this kind of reaction are those who used it to rob, and get the thrill of anarchic destruction.

Oh yeah, and the progressive ideologues who can use it for propaganda purposes pushing their divisive grievance politics.

That is some progress, to be sure, but that remains the exception rather than the rule. Both of those cases involved a "suspect" being shot dead in their own home by a police officer who was in clear violation of department policy.
