For the long run, probably not only because we are seeing so much head slap worthy socializing now that they are open again, but we would have a better idea if it did if we would have had more testing.

There are two different schools of thought divided down political party lines. If you are a Democrat and believe in the Big Government welfare state, then everyone becomes a burden on the government. This burden compounds with the needs of older age.

If you are a Republican, one think in terms of self reliance, work ethic, and a person paying more taxes, than you get in benefit. This will occur over your entire working career. This type of person sees old age as a time to make it even for the hard working elderly.

These two competing philosophies, are reflected in the Corona Virus mortality statistics. The elderly had about a 300% higher death rates in Democrat controlled states. Most of these states were already in debt, due to too many takers. Governor Cuomo of NY state and several other Democrats controlled states in the NorthEast, placed Corona patients in Nursing homes to protect the public. However, it did not dawn on them to protect the elderly. This is consistent with the welfare state mentality.

Florida, on the other hand, protected the elderly first, since Republicans see the retired elderly, as the time when we reimburse them for a life time of paying taxes, to support the leftist welfare state.

In the USA, 10% of the population accounts for 90% of the medical expenses. When the corona virus pandemic first started and the preliminary data was conning out, I thought that the country of origin; China, had invented a virus so that could cut costs in it own socialist country. Socialist countries tend to be more heartless, because their leadership incompetence limits how far the money can go. Then tend to go after the two bookends of life, through abortion and debates about the value of older life. These two bookends of life are largest ticket items in the welfare state. Each baby killed represents a lifetime of saved social expenses. And each older life ended represents a decrease in the compounding expenses. Together, the savings means more to skim or more to waste in terms of the leadership.

If you look at the national shut down, Democrat controlled states are happy to perpetuate the welfare, even to the point of no return to a working economy. The future elderly will be at risk due to cost cutting measures. The Republican states prefer to accept corona risk and work, so they build the tax based need to continue the nest eggs for their elder years. The Democrats are trying to spin this backwards, since they have been exposed by the corona virus. I wonder if this was by design? Id did bring out the NAZI in many of the left wing governors, that is normally hidden from view. Prisoners and criminals go free, are but if you try to work you go to jail.

You know, I hadn't thought of it in those terms, but you're absolutely right. Someday you too will be old and you'll be tossed aside as too expensive to maintain, and not worth the upkeep.

I sure hope FL and GA succeed with their openings so that other states have a model to follow.

That's why it is so critical for the working middle aged to plan for the future so that their 60s and 70s don't leave them overly dependent on their Social Security checks.
But people don't plan ahead very well.
That's probably why the government was (and has been) deathly afraid to allow Social Security recipients to take out their accumulated entitlement and invest it elsewhere.

Perhaps you would like to establish a policy to help them along. After all, they are old, sick, on pensions, social security and medicare, a drain on national resources.

A bizarre analysis I must say.
The states with higher death rates are completely predictable- urbanized, densely populated, apartment dwelling humans and those in nursing homes are most vulnerable. My state (Oregon) is about as left as it comes but the virus has not made inroads and the economy is beginning to open. People who are thoughtful wear masks. Trump supporters seem not to.

Democrats do not wish for a "Big Government welfare state". Most of us just aspire to government that responds respectfully to the pillars of a democratic society: facts, expert advice, an independent judiciary, and a respected, responsible free press.

As for people dying- I am pushing the age where I might be worried. I am not worried for myself. I am very worried for the younger generations- particularly males- because so many Americans have taken piss poor care of their health. This virus is capable of leaving lasting scars to the lungs and other organs. Until it is better understood why some people can become VERY sick (again particularly men) and others not at all, I would not make any assumptions about its lethality.

Is that true? Do you have a link with an estimate of how many lives were lost due to Cuomo's directive that nursing homes accept Covid patients? Just asking...I don't know the answer.
 
As of 6/6 I will have reached the upper echelon of humanity and will be known as 65 and older for the rest of my life.
