First Thing: US has three months to prepare for second Covid-19 wave, say scientists | US news | The Guardian

-- A group of nine leading scientists who advised President Barack Obama has warned that the US has just three months to rebuild its stockpile of emergency medical equipment if it wants to be prepared for a second wave of coronavirus in the fall. In a seven-page report, whose lead author was the White House science adviser for both Obama terms, the experts fault the Trump administration for failing to replenish the Strategic National Stockpile in preparation for a pandemic just like the one we're living through now.

The EU's coronavirus chief has also warned Europe to brace for a second wave, while another top US scientist, the groundbreaking cancer and HIV researcher William Haseltine, has said countries must work to contain the disease, not count on the possibility of a vaccine being developed, which is "not a slam-dunk by any means". --

Hard to tell if a 2nd outbreak is likely but we can't keep locking everything down as a way to supposedly reduce the spread.

We either need to let the virus run its course or get a vaccine. Shelter-in-place mandates, crashing the economy, and running up more government debt are not valuable solutions.

It's possible that we will have a scenario where we just have to go through cycles of opening up the economy for while to keep it from collapsing, then watching the case numbers and shutting the economy down again for a while to let the case numbers go back down- a sort of sputtering on-and-off type scenario. It may be the best we can do for now until everyone eventually catches the virus or we find a vaccine.

It's like an underwater swimmer that has to come up for air occasionally, then go back down. Have you seen those movies where the gunmen are trying to shoot the hero of the movie, and he is swimming underwater to avoid the bullets, but comes up real quick to catch some air and go back underwater again? We are the hero of the movie, the gunmen are the virus, and the air is the economy.

The Stock Market is NOT reflecting the pandemic shutdown fallout yet. It factored in the initial fear when it dropped 10,000 pts, then the Care Act relief bill stimulated it back halfway. But the second-quarter numbers and other realities have not been priced in, which is why Trump and GOP senate want to delay the next stimulus bill to coincide with the next Market drop. Anything to get President Numbnuts back in.

It's a perfect storm of stupid in the stock market right now

Close to 800,000 people have created new brokerage accounts on three of America's top brokerage platforms since the coronavirus pandemic hit the US.

That means tons of new people are playing the markets at a time when things are so uncertain that hundreds of companies canceled their 2020 earnings guidance. There is no model that can predict what's about to happen to the economy or the market.

That means tons of new people desperate for a coronavirus vaccine are now betting on potential treatments and cures. Just this week the market handed billions to two companies that made headlines without showing any real data.

This is very stupid, and people are going to get played.

The pharmaceutical industry was already opaque and scammy. Now suddenly everyone in the stock market is invested in a specific outcome from the sector. They want to be the person who scores big on a lifesaving treatment. In fact, they'll be afraid to miss out on opportunities. I have an extremely active subconscious, and I could not have dreamt of a more perfect condition for separating investors from their money if I tried.

Wall Street, of course, is beside itself trying to grasp on to something through this uncertainty. It is already a culture where original thinking can be frowned upon (it might upset your boss or your client), where every assumption is based on an old model, and where everyone is cribbing each other's work.

There is no model for the economic reopening from the coronavirus pandemic, and the closest possible model we have - China - is flawed. And it's flawed not only because the numbers China has provided the world about its coronavirus experience are extremely dubious, but because the US is simply not going to get off the mat as China did. Our economies are too different.

In sum, what we have in the market is an unholy mess. We have bored, unseasoned, emotionally conflicted investors playing around in a murky pool where one of the most opaque sectors has the ability to make the biggest waves. It's very stupid - people are going to drown.

Liberal scientists backing up the Liberal Agenda to lock everything down... typical.

It'll be in the next few weeks.

Since Australia is going into Winter, maybe we should see how they do before we make any assumptions. Data driven decisions are usually the best.

It isn't worth it. Better to simply bite the bullet and accept several hundred thousand deaths and be done with it.

Scientists do their jobs to make the world a better place. Their jobs are not political. Republicans just want to politicize science.

Democrats want to weaponize this crisis and cripple the economy

Democrats want to weaponize this crisis and cripple the economy

So by the reverse token, am I to believe that Republicans want to downplay the crisis and cripple the people? (Rhetorical, but I will answer anyway) No.

I believe you are probably correct that some extremists fall into the Democrat category you exemplified. Not all Democrats are the same. The extreme dichotomy between Republican and Democrat that I have seen for the last 20 years is way overblown. Not all Democrats are out to tear down our nation just to get President Trump out of office any more than all supporters of President Trump are racists, bigots, sexual predators, and/or morons. Putting people into nice little boxes works great when you are trying to win an argument, but you are still only trying. Most people are more complicated and may even agree with some of the same things you do if instead of compartmentalizing them you tried to hold an actual discussion with them.

Bizarre but strangely appropriate analogy.

That is stupid. Of course scientists have leans and agendas and corporate non-disclosure agreements and pensions, etc.

Your posts are as naive and ridiculous as ever.

Hopefully we don't needlessly restrict our economy any longer and we put millions of Americans back to work. This isn't just about the virus, it's about all the lives that will also be damaged by the cure if we don't act wisely.

Awesome, then I can look forward to the US being unprepared in three months.

That's the problem is that nobody knows where that tipping point is.

I know why scientists do their jobs. The scientists who are hired by government agencies went to school for their professions and were privately employed before entering the public sector.

If you want to call me stupid, understand what leads people to major in science subjects.

Who knows. Not even the experts know.
We do know who to protect. We do know we need to protect our nursing homes.
We also know we can’t shut down the country again (with exceptions like big events).

We might have to shutdown hotspots at a minimum or even the whole thing should a second wave include a more deadly mutation of covid.

Big question: (but still on topic)

Could we enjoy watching an NFL game between the Tampa Bay Bucs and the N.O. Saints without fans and with fake crowd noise?
What would 60,000 CGI fan faces look like on TV?

As usual you pivot and ignore the point... I said that scientists have leans and agendas and corporate non-disclosure agreements and pensions that can influence what they research and how they look at results. This is just a fact. Address what I said for a change.

You can say that about many types of jobs. Singling out scientists is ridiculous if all you care about is the benefits they get.

I voted we have no way of knowing.

But IMO that doesn't matter, we cannot close the country again.

We need to protect the elderly, and if any children are especially at-risk (much like we do with Nut Allergies) we take special steps to protect those particular kids.

As for the rest of us? We bite the bullet and takes our chances.

The vast majority of us will suffer little to no major ill effects, some will suffer somewhat worse but still survivable effects.

Those we know are at highest risk, can be protected without disrupting the economy or society.

I am not singling out scientists... WE ARE TALKING ABOUT SCIENTISTS...

Why did I even bother...

For how long? What are your plans for how to protect them?
