Key Points

  • Take on the NRA and its corrupting effect on Washington.
  • Expand background checks.
  • End the gun show loophole. All gun purchases should be subject to the same background check standards.
  • Ban the sale and distribution of assault weapons. Assault weapons are designed and sold as tools of war. There is absolutely no reason why these firearms should be sold to civilians.
  • Prohibit high-capacity ammunition magazines.
  • Implement a buyback program to get assault weapons off the streets.
  • Regulate assault weapons in the same way that we currently regulate fully automatic weapons — a system that essentially makes them unlawful to own.
  • Crack down on “straw purchases” where people buy guns for criminals.
  • Support “red flag” laws and legislation to ensure we keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and stalkers
  • Ban the 3-D printing of firearms and bump stocks

I don't know if he can win, but neither he nor anyone else would get my vote pushing these policies.

Win with a policy like that? Unsure, he might.

Jumpstart the next evolution of violent criminal enterprise to fulfill that demand? Definitely, and without question.

Most people don't vote on single issues, but it's certainly a factor. Let's just hope that if he wins the Republicans don't screw up so bad they lose the Senate too.

Instead of gun bans, Bernie should be pushing for gun safety and proficiency.

Many gun owners keep a gun or two stashed away somewhere, but haven't touched (or SEEN) it in months or years, in some cases.

People need to maintain their skills in the safety and handling of firearms. That means going to the range and putting some rounds through it every couple of months or so.

Bernie should be promoting this instead of bans and restrictions.

Every Republican and Conservative Independent I know votes on a single issue. 1) What % do you think vote GOP just on Abortion alone? Rehnquist and Roberts have both chipped away at Roe v. Wade, but have left it in place for political reasons to turn out GOPs.

2) How about Guns? We even have moderate DEMs on here who won’t vote for a Dem because of their stance on the second amendment, especially in the critical SIX Midwest states, five of which trump flipped — WI, IA, MI, PA, OH.

3) Then there’s Judges. That one really sealed the deal with Evangelicals in 2016. The rank stupidity of the third party leftists has thrown away the whole Century for them so far, as well as for at least the next 30 years.

4) Green Deal v. (Environmental) Destruction; 5) God — especially prayer in ‘government’ schools. 6) Gays — not only from the right, but from a whole lot of older social DEM and Indy moderates;

7) economy — my Midwest and your South still have more older voters than young, especially up here; younger voters suck with their % voting; older voters will not take a chance on a Socialist, especially after the RNC unloads on Sanders;

All together, you can put these seven together in an Acronym — JAGGGE(E)D

The democrats in Virginia thought they could pass these type of gun restrictions.
Even with a majority not possible.

This has pretty much become the DNC platform position on guns, if anything it would hurt him if he didn't have those policies which is why he is advocating for them now.

None of those "solutions" are workable, and none will prevent a single death.

With or without, I don't think Bernie can win.

25,000 firearms on their doorstep demonstrated that they couldn't Some of these Democrats like their jobs and want to keep them. They may get some passed, but IMO they have lost the next couple elections, and what's done can be undone.

Given how horrible the democrats stance on gun policy has been over the years, even knowing this from their side of the story.

Most of these points don't actually exist, or at least exist in some coherent way that they can be applied to all states. Not to mention the fact that as it goes 3-D printed weapons are not viable, nor does the gun show loophole actually exist in the capacity that the democrats try to make it seem.

You're right, most don't.

However, the gun and the pro-life people do.

Maybe. I think that the folk he's speaking to and would vote for him are likely not going to be too bothered. So if he can excite enough people to come out and vote, then yes he could win with that.

Personally, I think the minimum should be that anything the Police can have the People can have. I also support Vermont's carry laws, which are essentially that open and concealed carry are considered standard and one doesn't need a concealed permit to carry concealed.

I wouldn't say I'm a single issue voter, but his proposed gun restrictions are a deal breaker for me.

You make a good point. We (wife and I) actually have a family lawyer. I retained him back when I owned rental property. His law partner does criminal law. I discussed with the partner the use of a gun in self defense. He said the first thing that would come up if I were sued in civil court (he said I probably would be sued) is how and when (how recently) I had any training in the use of a gun. And he advised against using "reloads" (I am a reloader) but to only use factory standard velocity rounds in my home defense gun. He said the plaintiff's attorney will paint me out as a blood thirsty monster if I used high velocity or "custom built" reloads. As in, "Sadly, the "victim" might be alive today if not for the magnum powered rounds the defendant (me) pumped into him."

Your advice on training is sound. Thanks. Every once in a while someone offers worthwhile comment here on DP.

Agreed. FWIW, that's one reason I wouldn't vote for most of the Democratic candidates. It's like hiring someone for a job; you have 10 applicants. You look for the best and can find many reasons to hire someone but all you really need is one reason not to hire them. For most Democratic candidates, a reason not to vote for them is their stance on the Second Amendment. That said, there are lots of reasons not to vote for Trump: he's a chronic liar and, IMO, he's a traitor. F*** him.

Actually even though I disagree 100% with his stand his stand is pretty much the same among all the Dem candidate's. That said, yes they can win, there are Many issues with Trump that American Voters are not happy with and his personality only appeals to a certain segment of Americans which are the minority. Thing is IF the American People show up in large numbers come November trump will lose, if they don't they get what they deserve.

I'm not enamored of Trump's personality either, but he's in a street fight, and they're fighting with knives and guns. the gloves are off, no holds barred. So I get why he's so aggressive. But I do like his policies, and especially re-working those crappy one sided trade deals. At one time, back when those countries needed some advantages, those deals might of made sense. But now all those countries a full fledged competitors, and we need to look out for our own interests.

Dude, Trump is a coward, not a "street fighter". That's just verbiage used by fat guys in three-piece suits to make themselves look tough. Is there any doubt Trump would drop to his knees and cower behind the closest Secret Service agent if someone came at him with a gun? Trump is our nation's biggest *****. PABOTUS.

Tough talk doesn't make someone tough, actions do. Teddy Roosevelt was tough and he was correct to say "Walk softly and carry a big stick". By comparison, Trump's motto is "Walk loudly and carry a little dick". :)

....now pardon me while I run off to go post a new meme on Trump's Twitter page.

Opinions are like a-holes, everybody's got one, you and me included. We already heard your opinion, and you didn't hold back. Generally speaking, it's easy to denigrate a person from the comfort of an anonymous internet forum. That doesn't require any courage. Any ***** can do it. IMO, NOBODY gets to be president unless they can street fight, especially with all the establishment and MSM against him. You gotta give the devil his due. Trump can fight, when it comes to a political street fight. I could care less if he ducks for cover if ever a real gun is pointed at him; I would duck, too. I suspect you would duck as well. Facing the gun fire is what we pay the Secret Service for; taking a bullet if needed. I think it's more important to judge him by his policies. He's no ***** when it comes to getting things done.
