I too go by the numbers , actually I kinda like numbers , if you go back in time and check my voter registration you will find at one time I was a die hard Democrat.
I left the Democratic party in the middle of Obama's presidency, I criticised Obama's health care then and do now, and other things I criticised about Obama, not like the old monkey in the White House, muslims are in control of Obama , birth certificate in question these little gossip barbs I leave to the Right wing.
I criticise policies judgements that effect the American people .
Odd it worked with Obama not so much with Trump.?
It may be that the Trum... er Republican party needs to check with Trump before they make any decisions today, after all if you go against him you are gone if you displease him you might find yourself on Twitter.
Remember a president named Hoover kinda around the time of a depression see how that election went and how many voted against him.
Too far back maybe too drastic after all Hover was a Republican, very well , how about a president named Carter gas prices went up , Iran hostages ;a lot of bad things everybody including yours truly knew he wasn't going to win against a has been movie star named Reagan .did they vote for Reagan or against Carter??>
Independents pay more attention than you think another Right wing fault as I said before assuming the Independents do this or assuming the Independents do that.
One thing the Independents do whether they lean right or left or down the middle if we see something we think is wrong we say so, now the Democrats ain't to jumpy when they get criticised, the Republicans as long as you are criticising Democrats are just fine question a Republican leader or policy well that's different.
I can not speak for other Independents but for me I keep hearing this we're tough from the Republican right wing but a little interrogative sentence a little constructive criticism you guys come apart at the seems
Perhaps , just a wild guess here, but maybe, just maybe Independents really vote for the candidate that would do the best for all America and all the American peopleeace
I'd like to think that independents do vote for the candidate they think best for America. Independents didn't like either major party's candidates in 2016. 54% of independents disliked both Trump and Clinton. Basically didn't want neither one to become president. Not that was the independents fault, it was the two major parties who nominated them.
One in Four Americans Dislike Both Presidential Candidates
Amazingly 12% of independents voted third party come election day. At least 12% thought a third party candidate better for America. Probably the remainder of that 54% voted for the lesser of two evils, the least worst major party candidate, the candidate they wanted to lose the least.

I suppose one can look at the independent one of two ways. 46% of independents thought Trump was better for America while 42% thought Clinton was. Or that 58% of independents thought Clinton would be very bad for America while 54% thought Trump would be the pits for this country.
There's no doubt independents are not happy with Trump. Nor are they happy with any of the Democratic choices this year either. Question 37A through 37I.

So now what? Who do they vote for this time around? Perhaps we'll just have to wait and see mainly because everyone's numbers are in the negative.
Oh, and yes, there probably is more voting against a candidate than for one as you described.
