I too go by the numbers , actually I kinda like numbers , if you go back in time and check my voter registration you will find at one time I was a die hard Democrat.
I left the Democratic party in the middle of Obama's presidency, I criticised Obama's health care then and do now, and other things I criticised about Obama, not like the old monkey in the White House, muslims are in control of Obama , birth certificate in question these little gossip barbs I leave to the Right wing.
I criticise policies judgements that effect the American people .
Odd it worked with Obama not so much with Trump.?
It may be that the Trum... er Republican party needs to check with Trump before they make any decisions today, after all if you go against him you are gone if you displease him you might find yourself on Twitter.

Remember a president named Hoover kinda around the time of a depression see how that election went and how many voted against him.
Too far back maybe too drastic after all Hover was a Republican, very well , how about a president named Carter gas prices went up , Iran hostages ;a lot of bad things everybody including yours truly knew he wasn't going to win against a has been movie star named Reagan .did they vote for Reagan or against Carter??>

Independents pay more attention than you think another Right wing fault as I said before assuming the Independents do this or assuming the Independents do that.
One thing the Independents do whether they lean right or left or down the middle if we see something we think is wrong we say so, now the Democrats ain't to jumpy when they get criticised, the Republicans as long as you are criticising Democrats are just fine question a Republican leader or policy well that's different.
I can not speak for other Independents but for me I keep hearing this we're tough from the Republican right wing but a little interrogative sentence a little constructive criticism you guys come apart at the seems

Perhaps , just a wild guess here, but maybe, just maybe Independents really vote for the candidate that would do the best for all America and all the American people:peace

I'd like to think that independents do vote for the candidate they think best for America. Independents didn't like either major party's candidates in 2016. 54% of independents disliked both Trump and Clinton. Basically didn't want neither one to become president. Not that was the independents fault, it was the two major parties who nominated them.

One in Four Americans Dislike Both Presidential Candidates

Amazingly 12% of independents voted third party come election day. At least 12% thought a third party candidate better for America. Probably the remainder of that 54% voted for the lesser of two evils, the least worst major party candidate, the candidate they wanted to lose the least.

https://www.cnn.com/election/2016/results/exit-polls

I suppose one can look at the independent one of two ways. 46% of independents thought Trump was better for America while 42% thought Clinton was. Or that 58% of independents thought Clinton would be very bad for America while 54% thought Trump would be the pits for this country.

There's no doubt independents are not happy with Trump. Nor are they happy with any of the Democratic choices this year either. Question 37A through 37I.

https://d25d2506sfb94s.cloudfront.net/cumulus_uploads/document/m3wzkd0n59/econTabReport.pdf

So now what? Who do they vote for this time around? Perhaps we'll just have to wait and see mainly because everyone's numbers are in the negative.

Oh, and yes, there probably is more voting against a candidate than for one as you described.

Bernie is supposed to be an agnostic. He'll be the first agnostic president.
Is America ready for a agnostic president?
Agnostic is only a few shades away from Deist.

We were ready for Deists ages ago.

This is a very descriptive post , in 2016 it is true in 2016 a lot of people didn't like either Trump or Clinton, including yours truly
One small problem with your descriptive post, not to criticise problem , IT'S OLD NEWS.
Do you have any idea how many times in the last 4 decades the American people have actually voted for the lesser of 2 evils ???
I can count on 1 hand the past good presidents that I would vote for today , and they're not all Democrats.

The trouble with some presidential candidates today is turf .
That may sound strange, but as Biden said , well I lost the first 2 primaries cause they were white get me into a diverse caucus and I'll win , he lost in Nevada he said on to South Carolina to take back the nomination. Although nobody said it out loud and not to be racist but basically there are more black voters in South Carolina and Obama was my friend , but what of the white voters in New Hampshire, Nevada, and Iowa???

Then there's Budigig I'm from a small town , and I'm gay got no truck against gays but what about the straight people , what about the ones that live in big cities, what about the elderly who don't have private insurance though work.

There is Warren who constantly reminds voters she is a woman , ah the glass ceiling I thought Clinton already smashed through that good at dealing with women who were treated bad what about the old who's living on a fixed income far from the cost of living and young and working men and women America that are average but the pay hasn't changed since you tell me how long??

America needs a candidate who wants to build a coalition of equality based on Americans . A mixture of Americans white , black, brown, yellow multi ethnic, multi religious multi sexual orientation not labels American all Americans to have a voice in the White house.

If you don't know who's trying to do that , check out a speech given in San Antonia Texas this past week the night of the Nevada primaries:peace

I agree with pretty much everything you said. But with the polarization, ultra high partisanship, campaigns which pit one group of voters against another, the divide and conquer strategy. The negative personal attacks, trying to get the voter hate the other guy more than they hate you. They do all of this instead of campaigning on substance, new ideas, possible solutions to our problems, visions of where one wants to take America. I don't think there is a candidate out there capable of uniting this nation.

One can hope, but when both parties have been filled with ideologues who only push their agenda instead of an American one, there will be no uniting. Just more polarization, divisiveness, more partisanship.

Hate is such a strong word don't ya think?

It's not that I haven't dealt with it I have, according to quite a few I was labeled a Bush hater because I dared to ask why after Desert Storm President G.W. Bush gave Iraq back to the Dictator Saddam ? I was called a Bush hater.

I questioned Clinton on Nafta some Democrats said I was mistaken
I questioned President G.W. Bush on his reason to have a preemptive strike on Iraq I became a Bush hater once more.
I questioned Trump on his campaign promises I became a Trump Hater.

So ya see one does not have to hate or even dislike a Republican President to become a hater, one need only question them or their policies.

I totally disagree with your statement
One can hope, but when both parties have been filled with ideologues who only push their agenda instead of an American one, there will be no uniting. Just more polarization, divisiveness, more partisanship.
I can not tell if this is a random thought or perhaps a wish.
It is my belief that Americans can and someday will unite again, history does not lie.
Americans have been divided before from the worst division in American history "the Civil War" to the unification on December 9'th 1941.
To the division of the races in the 60's KKK/ white / back /hippies protest marches one president assassinated, one leader of the Civil rights movement assassinated one presidential candidate assassinated . it was a bad time.
By 1970 it was over. some accomplishments were made but segregation was dead.

As if that wasn't enough the draft was reinstated a little war called VIETNAM, problem is no matter how many times people explained why American troops had to fight there , none of it made sense, so you got drafted you're in the jungle on patrol might get your ass shot off and you here that things aren't going good on the home front, and they wasn't vets coming home from Nam were criticised , quite a few protested against the war in Vietnam. it was said if America pulls out of Vietnam the Communist would win. In 1975 America pulled out did the Communist win? If they did win , what did they win??

In 1980 the long trek back was starting, no body cared that much about Communism or far east countries that much anymore most Americans just wanted to get back to work , make a living , pay taxes and live comfortably.

So Americans push comes to shove will always unite around their country they ain't to big on uniting around one person though.:peace

Your last sentence provides hope. I am just sick and tired of all the negative personal attacks. I do think you're correct that no one person can ever unite this country. It usually takes an outside threat. WWII, the cold war and then 9-11. Looking back, we were fairly united from the end of WWII until the end of the USSR or the cold war. Our politics were completely different. Both parties recognized each's goal was for a secure, free, prosperous America. Only their paths to accomplish that goal diverged or were different. There wasn't what seems to me each party trying to destroy the other. Branding the other party as this nations number one enemy.

Bernie is definitely Jewish. He looks exactly like my uncle Mort!

Bernie is supposed to be an agnostic. He'll be the first agnostic president.

Is America ready for a agnostic president?

It'd be an interesting followup to our first atheist President, but I doubt he'll win.

It may be more of a question of whether Americans are willing to vote for ranting white haired, 78 year old New England Socialist Jew.

I'm sure ready for one. It would be nice to have a president that shares my beliefs.

Bernie is supposed to be an agnostic. He'll be the first agnostic president.

Yes, agnostic does not equal atheist.

Unless I'm mistaken are you saying the only way America can unite is through an outside source, likesay WAR.

I remind you sir of the flip side of that Vietnam did not unite America it divided America . Iraq divided America.

In the 1960's a majority of American black and white united to fight segregation they won in America any united majority can win
We also ask for and got the right to work law , ERA, Gender rights were increased Equality took a step up and most important the right to VOTE.
True there were some fatalities and many were hurt but if Americans are truly united the fear card does not work neither does intimidation or manipulation. It is also true that the fight against bigotry in any form to divide Americans still goes on today.

What as war brought us in World War 2 after serving America, in combat to protect America coming home some African Americans were killed because of their skin color.
Some Japanese Americans as well as island Americans fought for America while their families were in internment camps.

What war have we truly won since World War 2 ???

When true Americans look up and start thinking about an old phrase they may ask a question from political people
To Hell with political parties "WHAT'S GOOD FOR AMERICA AND AMERICANS MY COUNTRY, MY PEOPLE.

The phrase I was referring to, a little old perhaps but it has served me well "ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU ,ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY"'
Perhaps you've heard of it many people have some grasp it's meaning other just glance and keep going.:peace

I heard it. JFK 1961. I was just turned 15 at the time. Right now I'm not sure how to take that, I mean your last paragraph. I think I served my country well, you may think differently which is okay. Whether or not these days, in the days of polarization, divisiveness and ultra high partisanship, I suppose how well one served or serves their country depends on what one's politics is. what side of the aisle one is on.

One reason why we really haven't won any wars since WWII is that was the last one we fought to win. One shouldn't go to war unless one is willing to do all it takes to win as quickly as possible. Desert Strom was that way. The exception. I also think we have to take the wars into the context of the time they occurred and not through 21st century morals and standards to understand and learn from them.

But so be it.

Bernie is supposed to be an agnostic. He'll be the first agnostic president.

One more reason he has zero chance of occupying the Whitehouse.... besides the facts that he's a communist. Had a recent heart attack. Is very old. Generally a cantankerous nut.

.. only in a theocracy do people question if their country could ever have someone who doesn't know if there is a deity.... in power.

Я Баба Яга [emoji328]

Incorrect

Theocracy - a system of government in which priests rule in the name of God or a god.

America does not have this.

That Americans as a people, may not be ready to elect a person - not a priest, pastor or minister promising to rule our nation for God - that doesn't believe in a higher power, does not make America a theocracy.

But so be it.

J.F.K.'S speech is why I never miss a vote to this day.

At one time I thought as you did , that Kennedy was only talking to Democrats, or at least middle class people .
I was wrong although drafted and severed my country I found out long before that what Kenedy really meant.

it wasn't who he was asking it was the form of a simple request.
Americans don't need to belong to a certain political party or be rich or middle class or poor all are American.
Every American can do something for their country and many do, they serve in the military ,they pay taxes , they contribute to charities, they volunteer to help other Americans, none of these ask what political party they belong to, unless it is strictly for a political party, but then it wouldn't be charities would it.

A majority of Americans Vote , they compliment leaders when something is done right and vote for them they question leaders when something is done wrong if they listen and correct the problem , a majority will vote them back into office if not WELL?
So the rich , the middle class the poor and the elderly do something for their country , unfortunately the rich not so much.

"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country"

The reason why you and others " "Right now I'm not sure how to take that." is because over the years the working class , middle class the working poor the elderly and the poor have been taken for granted. they are more or less overlooked., In my opinion a bad mistake by the leaders of America.

However a day will come when America Will ALL Americans again and need us bad.:peace

As for your last paragraph .
William T. Sherman Civil War General "WAR IS HELL".
Nobody in their right mind would knowingly without though start and enter into HELL:peace

I think it would one thing if we had a practicing, believing Christian in the White House right now, but we don't. So I can't imagine Bernie's lack of religious belief will be much of an issue.

The American Taliban (The Religious Right) never votes for Democrats anyway.

Can't be any worse that the apostate in the White House.
That's a matter of opinion, but it does raise the issue of the current President's leanings. Some say we already have an agnostic President.
