Very possibly neither.
Human memory is not by any means precise.

That is certainly some politically convenient misremembering, wouldn't you say?

The timing makes me suspicious of the motive.

It could just be that with her drop in the polls people started asking her about past interactions with Sanders, and this came up.

But if so then those people's motive is suspect, if not hers as well.

No. I hit the wrong button

Well, based on the audio transcript that was eventually released, I can only assume you meant to vote "other."

I've not heard it, tbh, and this is the first I'm hearing of it.

Where's the "CNN Turns Into The View in 'Debate' Question" option.

That whole thing was unprofessional, childish and jaw-droppingly juvenile. Shame on that CNN reporter for bringing gossip and innuendo into a debate in the first damned place.

I think it's probably a miscommunication. Apparently they were discussing their strengths and weaknesses vs Trump and Bernie probably said it would be hard, or even impossible, for a woman to beat Trump due to sexism. Warren takes it as him saying a woman can't win the presidency and so there it is.

Agreed. While both are most certainly spinning the spat in their favor, I doubt either is lying. They just have different views of the conversation. Your view is a very good possibility.

...it's all about the money. I watched CNN hype the "spat" for days leading up to the "final debate". Ratings = $$$ and CNN wants the ratings.

There is such a thing as someone saying something, but somehow not grappling with the logical conclusion of what they just said. Given Sanders' proclivities and interpretation of "identity politics" (which curiously does not include a socialist's preoccupation with class), I think Warren knew what he was doing and called him on it.

That being said, a blow up between those two will probably produce a net benefit for Biden, Klobuchar, and Buttigieg. Which is fantastic for me.

I linked to it on the previous page. The explanation is super boring: they remembered the conversation differently.

Given the written framing of the questions which clearly involves production staff, the problem definitely goes beyond merely the reporter/moderator; CNN is up to its eyeballs in this.

While you could make the argument that the moderators should ignore such things, aside from a policy plan she released the week prior, it was the Warren campaign that levied multiple public charges against the Sanders' campaign and the Sanders campaign responded to each claim. The campaigns chose to make this a fairly large issue in the closing weeks of the Iowa caucus push. Of course the press is going to cover this and wonder what the hell is going on.

If there was an onus to rise above pettiness, that would probably fall on the campaigns.

Respectfully, that is not what they said. They both accused the other of calling them a liar.

I actually believe that the onus was on CNN not to turn a "professionally run" debate into what was obviously pre-planned gossip-mongering. Look, CNN is my go-to station; it's on my tv nearly half the day, but when someone from CNN does something childish enough to make me spit my coffee when it happened, I'm not going to just ignore it. There was a time and place for reporters to question each campaign and report the results; a national debate stage was, IMO, not the time nor the place.

P.S. In case anyone is wondering, both Bernie and Warren are much too far left for me. Sure, I'll vote for either of them if they are the nominee, but at this point I'm not carrying water for either of 'em.

It’s exactly the kind of conversation you’d expect from two people who angrily remember a conversation differently. If that doesn’t sound familiar to you, then you’ve never been in a human relationship.

Elizabeth Warren is a liar who stab her biggest political congressional political ally in the back.

Shameful.

I thought it was a potentially legitimate discussion point that was mired in inter-campaign drama which would result in a substantial political miscalculation for the American left. At that point, both campaigns would leave a hole large enough for Biden (who, literally, was standing between the two of them) to capitalize and neuter some of their momentum in Iowa.

You suspect deliberate manipulative shenanigans by CNN to make both "progressives" look bad?

No, I think CNN was doing their job and allowing two campaigns to self-destruct, because that is the consequence of [the campaigns'] choices.

Hmm. An interesting and legitimate perspective. I don't actually share it, but I do now understand it. Thanks!

Asking Warren "What it was like when Bernie told you that a woman could not win the election," when Bernie just denied saying such a statement, shows an incredibly amount of bias and a lack of journalistic integrity. This is in addition to running an unconfirmed story about a private conversation as fact. CNN is a ****ing joke.

This is a great article below describing just how shameful their behavior over the past 72 hours have been.

CNN's Debate Performance Was Villainous and Shameful - Rolling Stone

You can't blame CNN, they are just trying to get some viewers. The ratings on these debates is lower than an I Love Lucy rerun. Bloomberg was right, just a bunch of politicians rehashing talking points. No one was debating. The commentator was afraid to ask a real question. Not to mention the candidates are about as interesting as a crack in the side walk.

1. I do not know who is lying, of course.

2. But if Senator Warren is telling the truth, then I commend her for not shaking Senator Sanders's hand.

3. I do wish that President Trump, if he addresses Congress for the State of the Union, refuses to shake the Speaker's hand.

Funny how Warren sprung her ‘moral outrage’ at Bernie’s un-handshakable-sexism after riding his campaign platform to success for half a year.

I put my money on Warren making it up. She has a history of falsely tying herself to a victimized status (Fauxcahontas, remember?) and this is just a reinforcement of that.

Sanders has his problems, but that doesn't seem like anything he'd say.
