My stuff might still be up for a week or two, but I am done with it tomorrow. Lights don't even get turned on anymore.

Bah humbug and coal in your stocking. Or call me practical (Sheldon Cooper is on my side for whatever that is worth).

usually until sometime around the 1st of March. I like the decorations up during the bleak winter months. Of course, we have artificial trees...two of them. Nothing on the lawn. That would be weird :)

It ended the day HUSSEINTM took office and we've been fighting to get it back ever sin...oh wait, wrong thread

It used to be February 2nd = Candlemas
Now this date has only got one vote here.

After King's Day
Which King?

This King?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.,[1] and sometimes referred to as MLK Day) is an American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around King's birthday, January 15. The holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. The earliest Monday for this holiday is January 15 and the latest is January 21.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day - Wikipedia

This year King's day is on the 6th of January and that is celebrated in Latin countries mostly.

As it happens, I live in Baden-Württemberg, where this day is even a public holiday for everbody.
And those three kings will go from house to house and write a blessing above doors:

20 + C + M+ B + 00 in the year 2000.
This year it was: 19 + C + M + B + 99.

CMB may stand for Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar.
Or for: Christus mansionem benedicat = May Christ bless this house!

After King's Day, but I wish it was sooner.
And today is the day! :)

I also prefer the English "King's Day" or "Three Kings Day" or the German "Dreikönigstag" to the Latin "Epiphanias".
And here are the names of those kings once again: : Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar.

The tree stays up through the end of the year, but comes down Jan 1. At that point, Christmas is officially over.

Why "officially"?
Which autority said so? :)

Why "officially"?
Which autority said so? :)

I can't speak for anyone else, but when it's officially over at my house, it's over. No tree. No lights. No unopened presents. No roast beast leftovers. And most importantly, ALL Christmas music is banned until the next Black Friday, the (dare I say it :)) official start of the next Christmas season.

If you want to keep Christmas after Jan 1, you keep it in your heart.

Christmas season ends when the credit card bill comes due in January

@ about Candlemas and Groundhog Day

Since the traditional Candlemas celebration anticipated the planting of crops, a central focus of the festivities was the forecasting of either an early spring or a lingering winter. Sunshine on Candlemas was said to indicate the return of winter. Similarly, “When the wind’s in the east on Candlemas Day / There it will stick till the second of May.”

A bear brought the forecast to the people of France and England, while those in Germany looked to a badger for a sign. In the 1800s, German immigrants to Pennsylvania brought their Candlemas legends with them. Finding no badgers but lots of groundhogs, or woodchucks, there, they adapted the New World species to fit the lore.

Today that lore has grown into a full-blown festival, with Punxsutawney Phil presiding. For all things groundhog, visit the folks at Punxsutawney and see what Phil is predicting this year.

Candlemas/Groundhog Day | Old Farmer's Almanac

Here in Germany we know of no groundhog day.

Candlemas is known for two reasons:

The working year of the farmers start -
- and the Christmas season is defenitely over

It's Candlemas today!
Or Groundhog Day!
Christmas is over!

That reminds me, I need to take the random Christmas ornaments I hung up in random locations down.

Why not leave them for Christmas 2020? :)

I might catch my coat on one of them that I forgot was there, trip over the carpet, fall on my face and strangle myself to death.

Well - merry Christmas, then!
