I voted both. We already have layered government: city, county, state and national. Why not continental and world?

The trick is to keep each level of government in its own lane doing its proper functions. The city government is the best one to fill in the potholes on the street outside my home, while the world government is the best one to negotiate with the space aliens when they finally get around to landing and making themselves known. And so on.

I agree with your initial (bolded above) statement. The problem is that power (thus expense of government) tends to flow upward through governmental levels despite the US supposedly having a federal government with Constitutionally limited federal powers. It seems a rather weak premise to assert that we need a continental and/or world government to "negotiate with space aliens".

While some minimal level of government is a necessary evil, it should be kept as small as possible with very few, limited powers.

In theory it sounds good. Top to bottom government on a grand scale. Unfortunately, as we've seen, the government at the top will be controlled by people we have no power over. And little by little they will pull more and more power to them. We have seen this with our own federal government. Things that were once state by state issues have been federalized. the same thing has happened in the European Union. And what currency would we all use? The reason Greece couldn't pull itself out of trouble a few years back was that it had no currency of it's own which they could devalue and restore their economic system. No, One World Government is a bad idea, except on paper.

In my opinion, I would only support continental government, as a world government would be ultimately useless with possibility of power abusers. If we were to impeach the leader of the world (considering it has an impeachable officer), we would need a worldwide vote with billions of people. But for continental governments, it would be much easier to impeach the leader if needed, and one decision can't bind the entire world. Also, continental governments actually have the ability for relations with other continental governments. With a world government, we would need to discover aliens at least close to being as advanced as us. A world government is only good on paper, but continental governments might be pretty good.

yes in theory its possible depending on the make up of them but it would be a very tricky thing and have to be pretty specific. the higher up the government IMO the smaller it should be. (smaller in what it regulates, individual rights, fair trade, environmental/health regulation maybe) Also this top government wouldnt have a president but would have a high congress, a high senate made up by continental representatives and a high house made up of each country's leader

more than likely it couldnt be design right though and would take a world war to do it

It depends. I can imagine a world and/or continental government that I would support. I can also very easily imagine ones I would never support.
