Have you ever joined in an internet mob? If so, why?

So Lindsay Ellis is a youtuber who is pretty successful. Last year she tweeted "I get really excited about white genocide", obviously a joke in my mind.

Internet lost its mind, and she was attacked by the right, she's very left wing, and All the usual death threats, insults, etc followed.

It effected her severely and she had to go into therapy.

The left attacks people too. Chic fil e makes chicken sandwiches. The old guy who started the business was right wing and very religious. I don't think he ever said anything but he funded anti-gay organizations. Chic file e has since been attacked on the internet and boycotted. Though I think the attack just reinforces what the old guy thought about gays.

I was posting political cartoons to tumblr for a time. Political cartoons are supposed to be edgy and I tried to make mine so. Some tumblrinas got offended and attacked me. Not only me, but anyone who came to my defense was also attacked. Eventually, I just gave up on tumblr.

Along with these mobs are people who don't care about the cause, they just want to inflict as much damage as possible.

Why can't people show a little kindness and compassion? You can disagree, just tell the person you think they are wrong and then move on.

It was a teacher who abused Autistic kids. She should be in prison.

I don't follow herds.

Internet or irl, no. If someone offered me to harm or threaten another, no punishment, no consequences, the answer is still no. The golden rule is what I go by.

I have no problem with free expression as long as it is not violent (throwing things, causing damages, assaulting or battering people, etc.).

One has all sorts of responses in such situations.

Retort, debate, walk away, etc.. My preference in a situation like the OP video is walk away.

Let her speak, let comedians make jokes, let pundits comment.

If I feel strongly enough I can respond non-violently in debate or counter-protesting. But I do not support "mobbing" designed to silence the opposition.

Funny, but mobbing seems to happen quite a bit in our own Forum of late.

Fortunately we always have the ignore button. :)

Certainly don't condone threats against the woman. But if she was stunned that there would be backlash from her comments then mebbe she is a little dimwitted...

Was this "mob" organized against her, or was it individuals giving her their opinions about her comment?

It might not seem like there is any difference to her, but to call it a mob, there has to be some kind of organization involved.

I frankly have no idea who Lindsay Ellis is.

I avoid Chick-Fil-A in part because I don't like that it's founder funded anti-gay organizations - but I went and tried their food once and was unimpressed. Plus the nearest one I'm aware of is far out of my normal travel patterns. And on top of that I've been trying to cook my own food these days, as it's generally healthier and I enjoy doing so.
So really, I was never interested in their products to begin with, and probably wouldn't have tried it even once except for the controversy/internet rage.

Comedy, and I think political cartoons qualify, usually has to ride the edge to be at it's best. So it's easy to go over that edge for some people and occasionally for most.
The internet communities are fickle, in a way.

It depends, really. In some cases it's reasonable to react negatively, and in others it's taken too far. Like all things humans do, mistakes are made.
