Should the US Be A Superpower?

Should The US Be A World Superpower?

This.

Frankly for our own good I wish it were not necessary. The problem is, if *we* don't play dominant-power world-cop, someone else will. Does anyone really want Russia or China filling that role in the near future? For the sake of the world, I don't.

It's a dirty job but someone is *going* to do it.... power vacuums tend to get filled.

This is really my point. Which other "superpower" do we really want being the example? Certainly not China or Russia.

Straw man alert! Straw man alert! Danger, Will Robinson!

Don't hit me out of left field with things like "if you think the U.S is the worst and most racist country in the world" -- unless you like advertising that you have some kind of boilerplate attack that you like to use against posters you don't agree with. I won't bite on such an absurd attempt to get me to defend something I never said, never came close to saying.

Dismissed.

Amelia..I will apologies for what I said to you....it was directed at someone else and I quoted the wrong person (you)

However I will standby what I was saying to the person it was actually directed at....its accurate.

Thank you. Much appreciated.

A country that elects Trump and is the most racist in the world should not have the biggest military and the most nukes.

Just so ya know, the US does not have the biggest military or the most nukes.

So china has more soldiers by quite a bit. They also have a.land area about equal to ours and a population about 4 times bigger. But compare the equipment Americans have compared to the Chinese.

As to nukes. So Russia has a few hundred more. How many does it take to create a mass extinction?

Glad to see you looked up, did you notice France is third and not China. That said, I woul love to see the world reduce their nukes to a handful each and for us to not spend so much on military expenses along with the rest of the world. Thing is if we don't not only do we put ourselves in an unsafe position we do the same for many other nations. So in a perfect world there would be no need for us to be a Super Power, until then ..

I’d rather we fix our justice system, give people healthcare, and educate the populace than spend so much money being the global hegemon.

Not exactly... we put ourselves out there for ourselves and ourselves only. Most of the regimes we installed have been far more brutal than what we replaced.

Oh, I know oh too well we have a lot of room for improvement, and that is where I would put my focus, not to mention saving Billions in the process.

Doesn't matter if anyone thinks we should or shouldn't...we are.

True, but to pretend that nothing we do can ever knock us down is foolish, and very dangerous.
Great Britain was once the reigning superpower on the planet, Rome was once the world's superpower.
All empires run the risk of collapse.

This will be a moot point by the year 2100.

The United States of America by then will be experiencing so much domestic unpleasantness that it will not have the time or will to even think about being a superpower.

I've made no such pretense. I don't know of anyone who has made such a pretense.

Well, the point of being a superpower is to flaunt your power. That's certainly what Russia and China do.

I always thought what made one a Great Nation Superpower was NOT being like communist Russia and communist China?

I always thought that being a really Great Nation Superpower meant that its peoples were secure and more that it could also be a good and positive influence for peoples around the world, a force and power to admire, not fear and loathe in it's flaunting misuse and abuse of its Superpower.

Guess I was wrong all those years.

Our people are secure because we can destroy the entire planet if we so choose and we can twist other country's arms.

There are several other liberal democracies that would also make okay super powers.

The question - as written - is tricky to answer. There is no reason the US (vs any of those others) should be the world super power, but there is also no reason it shouldn't.

I voted 'yes' in any case.

I try to make all of my polls something non-partisan that both sides can answer yes to and both sides can answer no to. I don't see the point in partisan polls where the poll is worded in such a way to get the partisan results that the partisan poster wants. I came up with this poll due to a debate in another thread I was having with a member who claimed that the US didn't need to be a superpower and I was curious as to how others felt because I argued that even most Democrats wanted the US to be a superpower. My belief is that if the US hadn't already been a superpower the world would have been taken over by Germany and Hitler. Even today, NATO countries depend on us for their freedom.
