Which is the biggest threat to Americans?

    Introduction to trade zones here.

I'm really curious why so many American posters have a deep rooted fear and hatred for the EU.

Please explain why you might hate the EU in your reply - thanks in advance.

Ah, our students have to learn both - if you're going to trade and sell around the world, you need to be proficient in both.

Your joke aside, I take it you don't feel personally threatened by the existence of the EU?

Some folks think that Europe has benefited disproportionately from our "generosity" after WWII, that European nations are ungrateful for all that "selfless" aid, and that our trade agreements are weighted in Europes favor.

That many European nations have chosen policies that are contary to some people's views in the US is just proof (to them) of that ingratitude.

The least threat to the US is for Europe to decide for themselves...and, depending on their decision, we will respond as we see fit.

Voted "Europe can choose for itself."

The whole "deep rooted fear and hatred" is a bit much, some of us simply do not agree with the idea and we have every right to that opinion. Regardless, no matter what the EU does or their member states do we will continue to engage them in trade. Of course our trade and our currencies compete but that is not a "threat," and that makes the poll questionable.

"Trade Zones," trade agreements, trade partnerships, <insert whatever else here> will still exist anyway.

What do you really want to discuss?

One reason is they protect their markets from U.S. competition, while exporting to ours. BMW, VW, Mercedes, Porsche, etc. deficit wise, the EU isnt that bad, but they need to import more industrial finishec goods other than wood, pulp, and other low margin bulk goods.

Why would I? America has strong European roots as well, and the West has often banded together and tend to have similar forms of government and philosophies. Other than the Euro, which I think was one of the dumbest things y'all could have done. The UK was right to have kept the pound. The EU should have been viewed more as a Confederacy wherein each state is still Sovereign. And printing and maintaining the value of your own currency is one of the hallmarks of State Sovereignty. I think that perhaps Germany rues that decision.

But that aside, the US and Western Europe have enjoyed a long and stout relationship that, despite our differences, has provided for long periods of stability and growth. Europe can do what it feels it needs to do, it's up to the Europeans to run their own governments and choose their own direction. But I don't see how that could really negatively affect the relationship with the US. The US and Europe allied relationship will maintain for quite some time to come.

Until we take over the world and begin the Holy American Empire. But you're in the clear until then.

Made me think of one of my favorite Terry Pratchett quotes:

NOTE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AND AMERICANS: One shilling = Five Pee. It helps to understand the antique finances of the Witchfinder Army if you know the original British monetary system:

Two farthings = One Ha'penny. Two ha'pennies = One Penny. Three pennies = A Thrupenny Bit. Two Thrupences = A Sixpence. Two Sixpences = One Shilling, or Bob. Two Bob = A Florin. One Florin and one Sixpence = Half a Crown. Four Half Crowns = Ten Bob Note. Two Ten Bob Notes = One Pound (or 240 pennies). One Pound and One Shilling = One Guinea.

The British resisted decimalized currency for a long time because they thought it was too complicated.

Seriously... surf European threads once in a while and see. Don't post - just surf. Giving you names might be against the rules so I won't.

The irrational fear and hatred that some Americans have for the EU. American goods are sold here - we buy Macs, Mustangs and Harley Davidsons. We shop on Amazon etc so American goods and companies are not blocked from selling but most American posters who post on EU posts want to see a profitable and rich customer fail. That's an occasional customer for American goods so why wish failure / bankruptcy on a customer?

Europe is acting fairly under WTO rules. Why does it affect or upset you Americans that European nations grouped together to create a trade bloc?
