Why is this so important?

Government form design. In order to not seem discriminatory, "male" and "female" should NOT be at the top of the list.

Two. There are two genders, male and female. Sometimes, females are attracted sexually to females, and males are sexually attracted to males. They're still males and females.

Sometimes, a male wants to be a female, and vice versa. They're still male, or female.

There are very effeminate males. They're still males.
There are very masculine looking females. They're still females.

Male and female created he them. Not male, female, trans, questioning, lesbian, gay, asexual, etc. Everyone is either a male or a female.

Those gay penguins that raised a chick from a heterosexual penguin couple? They're males.

Well, there are amoebas. Amoebas are neither male nor female. I have to admit that at least.

Only two. Claims for others are mere fabrications to excuse aberrations, create an appearance of social acceptance. This is of little or no importance, except for those who are aberrations of the norm and can't accept themselves as they are.

Technically there are three or four depending how you categorize things. Asexual as in no sex what so ever, the null value 0. Female as in egg carrier and incubator a plus one value +1. The male the DNA storage distribution node a negative one value -1. Then there is hermaphrodite which both female and male and value ranges from -.99 to .99 but not fully -1 and or +1.

In the natural world there are 2 genders - male and female. A 3rd would be hermaphrodite, although extremely rare. A 4th could be neither. There is a movement that would like us to acknowledge that a long list of mental disorders are instead more "genders".

I believe that there are only two genders, each reflecting the physical, biological, and social characteristics inherent in human males and females.

Now it is true that in nature there are examples of literally bisexual (Hermaphroditic) creatures; including snails, Echinoderms, and worms. There are also creatures that reproduce asexually, mostly single celled organisms but there are also some plants and many forms of fungi.

There are even examples of creatures changing their sex due to population or other environmental circumstances. This includes some species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, and reportedly some insects.

However, humans are highly complex and specialized creatures. While we have examples of Hermaphroditism, (one can check the lists) but to date (unless there's been some new research), none have exhibited possession of fully functional and complete male and female reproductive organs. Even those labeled "true hermaphroditism" simply possess some combination of one or more testis and ovary per side.

Regardless, while I have no problem with people expressing themselves in any way they wish, or addressing them with whatever pronoun they wish as common courtesy, I do not currently believe at this time that "gender is fluid."

I don't know what causes it, although I suspect it is more of a mental acceptance or confirmation of desire to be both "other" and accepted as such. But until science points otherwise, my opinion will remain that there are only two human biological sexes and either can be expressed socially/sexually in many different ways (Hetero-, Bi-, Homo-, and asexual).

That transgenderism is a mental desire to physically express what one believes their "true sex" is, or in the case of "Otherkin" (like those who claim to be fictional or mythical creatures, or even objects) peer acceptance of their fantasies.

You're thinking sex, not gender.

Quite a few, but ultimately, at least for statistical sake, it boils down to 5.
Male
Female
Agendered (neither)
Bigendered (the degree of one to another can vary per person)
Variable (the balance between the two points changes)

The last two are the source of the myriad of other gender labels, but those can be groups as such.

Gender in this context is the same thing as sex.

No one ever considered it different until perverts at universities wanted to install socialism in America.

Scientifically speaking there are only two, with perhaps several variations of anomaly. Now as to how many gender preferences there are, dunno, sky is the limit.

I do think that this whole, multiple gender identity thing will be something of a passing fad. However till then, who are we to judge others or force them into a role they don't want to be in? If people claim some weird off-the-wall gender identity, we can at least humor them and the law can recognize it for the sake of their personal freedom and therefore societal harmony. Life liberty and the Pursuit of happiness, right.

Let people call themselves what they want as long as it does not infringe the rights of others. Discrimination is not a right.

No heavy math, I only have 11 toes.

Sex and gender before 1950 something were interchangeable in academia. In society gender fluidity and such is a more recent phenomena circa the mid 2000's. I use the old version as the new version perpetrated by academia is quite frankly at best a specious farce. The new versions use is best limited to academia in limited setting for specific purpose.

I'm the gender that gets the Federal grant.

I must say this is really a ridiculous poll. It does not deserve an answer in my humble opinion.

What definition of "gender" are you using? Without defining terms, no one is talking about the same thing. Clue: "gender" has several different definitions depending on usage.

Most Western societies recognize two genders, which match up with the two physical sexes. I think having a third catch-all "other" gender makes sense for people who don't feel like either of the two existing genders fits them.

Your first sentence is not necessarily true. Sociologists for example use a definition with an almost unlimited number of genders.

You are conflating two completely different things. By your logic, left-handedness was also introduced by perverts wanting to install socialism. Quite a number of LBGT people are otherwise quite conservative.

And in the context of physical body compared to internal self, gender no longer is the same as sex. Yes, it used to be, but as we are learning more, we are needing to make that distinction. As we learn, we change previous notions, such as a flat Earth, or the sun moving around the Earth. Those too met with the denial transgenderism and the distinction between sex and gender are seeing today.
